potty training.. help he holds all day!

my 3 yr old knows what the potty is for and has always held his pee and refuses

to poop in public. we are now trying to potty train and he will hold it all day

to avoid peeing in the potty. im afraid of pushing him too hard as he starts ans

stops the flow as soon as he feels it. also he regresses if too much pressure is

put on him. help??? what do i do? therapist say throw out the pull-ups

completely but im afraid his constipation will come back also.
