Guest guest
Dear Pat in NY Yes, you are doing it right! Just reply and we can all read your meil And maybe you did not get a response before, because we do not know what to say except we all know that prednisone is a very serious med and we are glad you can get off it. What does your doctor say about the pain? I have arthritis, and have serious pain with it. I take Glucosamine w/Chronditin(?) and MSM, and if I do not take enough even for one day, I am in great missery. There must be something you can take. On occasion I allow myself a Tylenol with codein, just so I can sleep. But that is a luxury I do not do often because it is bad for my Liver. [ ] Leg Pain Hi All, I have AIH since 8-01. I am presently reduceing my predisone every month and am now down to 1 mg. I ache all over but I want desperatly to be off it. My liver #'s have been great for 8 months now. So from that stand point I can come off pred, but the joints are so painful, and i have these intense pains up and down my legs all day worse at night. I am even reducing my 6mp down to 100mgs. Has any one had leg pains? I jump in baths all night long only to get about 5 minutes worth of relief. I hope I get a response, I have written in the past but never heard back from anyone. Am I doing this right by hitting reply after reading? Pat in NY
Guest guest
Hi Pat, My son is 11 and has AIH. He was diagnosed in 11/02 with it along with Ulcerative Colitis. In the begining of when he was being diagnosed... his pedi GI kept asking if he had any joint pain... sometimes it would be there..and sometimes it wouldnt. She indicated to me when I asked why is she asking about joint pain....said that it is sometimes a *side effect* of the AIH..and possibly....when someone has one autoimmune disease...they have another with out knowing they have it. Rhumetoid Arthritis is another of the top 10 autoimmune diseases. During sports season he finds himself taking 1 aleeve about 2 hrs prior to playing...baseball and basketball and soccer. He did however notice the pain increasing at times when the prednisone was decreasing. He was on prednisone from 11/02 till 02/04 and 6MP from 01/03 to about 4 weeks ago. Not sure that is any help..but it is my experience with the pains thru my son's disease. Guest guest
I am almost embarrassed to respond to this list-because when I see what others are suffering I really have very little to complain about-(are there many others out there who feel the same?)-my issue with my legs other than tingling quite often in my feet after walking several minutes (a classic stenosis symptom I believe) is I get cramps-mainly at night and mainly just before waking up. Very unpleasant-effecting mainly calves and sometimes hamstrings. Leg Pain Hello, I was wondering if any of you have severe leg pain with your back problems? Thanks and hope you have a pain free day. Guest guest
Hi : Stan here in Fort Lauderdale. As far as what to do for leg/foot cramping, you can try Quinine Sulfate (350 mg per capsule). Some pharmacy's require a dr's script and others let you buy it over-the-counter. Two capsules at bedtime should take care of cramping. I had terrible foot cramps until I began taking this Quinine sulfate. Best, Stan
Guest guest
Jan I am 43 years old and was diagnosed at 42 with Spinal Stenosis. I also have scoliosis and disk degeneration. Thank God my pain is not as severe as Im reading from you and other people. Twi weeks ago I bent over to pick up my daighhter and have been in pain since. Reason for this email is that I dont believe 39 is to young, unless 3 years ca make a big difference (diagnosed at 42.) I would not stop with your daughter just because a DR said so. If my parents would not of listened to my Dr long ago, I wouldnt be suffering from scoliosis. Pediatrician ignored all signs of it. By the time I was diagnosed, I was 6 " 2', fully grown and in pain. Guest guest
My daughter has her tonsils out in August and is better but like yours still has mild cycles that include leg pain. Yesterday was one of those days and her legs hurt bad enough she didn't want to walk until we got Tylenol in her. The other things that help with leg pain for her is she likes to take a bath in our Jacuzzi and the heating pad. These things may only provide psychological comfort I don't know but it helps until the Tylenol kicks in. Christy Mom to 4y/o >>> krob901@... 02/16/05 11:37AM >>> Hello! There are some months when we can tell she isn't feeling too good, but doesn't really complain of anything except joint pains. Except last night she woke up screaming for about 20 minutes with her leg hurting " on the inside " she said. We thought it was probably growing pains, but my other children have never cried so much. She seemed to be in lots of pain. I just wondered if others experience this after surgery? I just want to make sure this is something normal for Pfapa children. Guest guest
Judy, I didn't have any painful deep aches...but I also wasn't trying to give up any meds at a month post op...yikes...that is very soon! If it feels unusual, or new, or is an increase in pain I would definitely call your surgeon's office and talk it over. That said, I know of others reporting a variety of leg pains in the time period directly following revision. I think at a month I still had a pretty overwhelming deep exhaustion in my muscles whenever I did my walking! Guest guest
Judy, Geezzz. Everything hurt after a month. I started doing some serious walking after a few weeks and that brought on tremendous pains in my butt literally. My gluts and performis were extremely painful most of the time up until 5 months. If however, you are concerned you should call your doc. > > > > Just curious, has anyone else experienced a painful, deep ache in the > > leg following revision surgery and did it go away over time? Guest guest
Thanks . I probably should have clarified that there was a bit of time between my first and second stage. I'm three months out from my first stage and a month and a half from the second (anterior) stage. It's good to know that it's not uncommon to have significant pain at this stage, but I still may call my surgeon's nurse. I start aquatic therapy in a week at his recommendation. I didn't even know there were PTs that do one-on-one water therapy until the other day. I have a lot to learn :-) Judy [ ] Re: Leg Pain Judy,Geezzz. Everything hurt after a month. Guest guest
Hi Judy, Sorry to hear about the leg pain. I had horrible pain in both my legs, particularly from the knee down for six weeks post op. It started in the hospital. The doctor really didn't give me an answer for what was causing it, except that I was stretching muscles know that I was standing straight and not bending my knees all the time. He did do a CT scan in the hospital that showed nothing unusual. My husband and daughters would massage my calves and that helped. It got to the point that I hated going to bed, because I knew when I got up during the night it would start hurting again the minute I got back into bed. Then I'd just count the minutes until I could take another pain pill. Believe me, I feel your pain... Surprisingly after 6 weeks it just went away! It was almost an overnight miracle. I have had no problems since. I swim/walk regularly and feel wonderful. Good luck! With healing thoughts.... Guest guest
Thanks Dianne. I hope time will tell. I feel like I have to skip a dose of the pain meds in order to really know what's going on in my body, yet with starting pool therapy, my doctor wants me to stick with the regular timed dosing schedule. Guest guest
Hi Judy, Ugh on the leg pain. I wouldn't say I had pain but definitely achy and thought I had restless leg syndrome. The more I stretch the better I think its getting. New stiffness in my hips though now too. We are probably stressing muscles more than we understand. Have fun with the water therapy. Guest guest
Hi Annette. I had forgotten about the restless leg syndrome. It's happened twice so far and just started recently, but in a way it was funny because it was like I was having convulsions (the image makes me laugh). Rather than just needing to mildly shake my leg, I felt like I had to jerk my entire body around and since that didn't work, I had to get out of bed. I just started keeping a dairy, because I couldn't remember which meds I took at which time when it happened, and this may help figure out if it's related to one of them. I went to andria's rec pool the other day. I never realized they have equipment like styrofoam dumbbells and flotation belts that you can help yourself to. It was also nice because they have a wide ramp that leads down into a walking lane of 3.5 ft. Next week, I see the PT in McLean for evaluation and aquatic therapy, but at least I know I can carry on the water exercises locally in-between visits. I'm sorry about the stiffness in your hips. I always wished there was a local PT who knew first hand how to work with long fusions (not that I would wish this on anyone). I hope the stiffness will work it's way out eventually, though I guess we'll always be stiff in certain places. New question for anyone out there. How do we know when are fusions are solid? My doctor said my fusion might not take because of osteoporosis, but he said he'd know at the next visit in two months. Is it always clear on an X Ray? He made a comment that sounded like my last X rays. from the visit a few weeks ago, weren't that clear. If I can go somewhere else for digital radiology and that makes for a more detailed film, I'll do it. Judy [ ] Re: Leg Pain Hi Judy,Ugh on the leg pain. At the time I saw him a few months back, the leg pain was not as bad as it is now - almost every time I take a step it's like an electric shock down into my left calf. I had a pinched nerve back in 2002 which this doc operated on and I have not had leg pain again until now. I think I may need to have another scan but have not been back to see my doc yet. Any thoughts? Thanks. Jenn
Guest guest
That leg pain takes you down, doesn't it??!! I about could not walk the other day & almost went to the ER myself, but I have a 3 yr old and an 11 month old so I didn't. I have degenerative disc disease which causes terrible back pain but also leg pain, and I've been dealing with it for almost 10 yrs too. You're right - I need to maybe see another doc. Same with my pain specialist - he does not seem to care anymore. Maybe he's jaded, or frustrated that I continue to be in pain, but so am I!!!! Thanks for the reply.
