Guest guest
I am trying very hard to put my 10 year old autistic son on the gluten free, casin free diet. It has been hard but we are getting there. Are there any suggestions for other treats to replace ice cream that is gluten and casin free. --- M Pappadia <pappadia@...> wrote: > Ann - > Going gluten free helped my son tremendously. Guest guest
Rice Dream comes in several flavors and cost about the same as Ben & Jerry's. Sorbet is generally dairy free but read your labels. You can make frozen fruit pops with or without Rice milk. There are all kinds of recipe books available. The CFGF websites have recipes for all kinds of things I am told. Kathy -NNY
Guest guest
I found the Dari-free ice cream to be the best. You need an ice cream maker, but you can find those at fairly cheap prices - check the clearance isles at this time of the year (I know I saw some on clearance at Target, if you have those in your area). The recipe is: In a blender, combine 1 cup warm water and 1/3 cup DariFree powder (or just 8-9 oz of another milk substitute). Blend well, then add: 1/3 cup sugar 1 1 /2 tsp egg replacer (or powdered pasteurized egg whetes such as Just Whites) 1/2 tsp vanilla pinch of salt 1 T liquid calcium, if desired 1 tsp canola oil Add ice cubes to make 2 cups liquid. Blend well. This mixture should be cold enough to use in the ice cream maker without further chilling. Or instead of using an ice cream maker, you can pur it into Popsicle molds. You can double this recipe, but it will take somewhat longer to solidify. Add cocoa powder, chocolate chips, nuts etc. THis recipe is from Unravelling the Mysteries of Autism and PDD by Karyn Seroussi. She has some other great recipes too. I think DariFree now has ice cream for sale. CHeck out their website at www.abersoldfoods.com or www.vancefoods.com (I can't remember which one it is). Guest guest
Try Rice Dream in the ice cream aisle at your friendly health food store. It tastes much like ice cream and comes in lots of flavors. Kind of pricey though. Guest guest
Be careful - according to the list at www.gfcfdiet.com, Rice Dream ice cream (if memory serves, just the vanilla) contains gluten. I haven't visited the website lately, but they update it often. It's a valuable resource and worth checking out. Guest guest
> Vitamite has casein. There are several " milk alternatives " that are not milk alternatives but lactose alternatives. Unfortunately, manufacturers can be sneaky- for instance: Veggie Milk has gluten because it contains oats. Rice Slices " the cheese alternative " has casein it. Amy's soy cheese Frozen Pizza has casein. Fleishman's Margarine has whey which is from milk. However, Fleishman's unsalted does not. Rice Dream MILK does have gluten in it. I am not sure if they now guarantee that there ice cream is free. Tofutti brands (the best! They have GOOD cream cheese and ice cream) is casein free and they will not guarantee gluten free because one of the " flavourings " they add are from another manufacturer and they won't say who because it will give away a " secret " . Luckily, my son does not react to it. The best website is to go to http://www.gfcfdiet.com I also love the GFCFrecipes on . I also use Ms. Robens (http:/www.missrobens.com) for buying hard to find items and for having a " few " mixes on hand in an emergency (I have three cake recipes that are from scratch that are perfect but if I run out of an ingredient .....) Guest guest
, I haven't seen the Mocha mix but I just heard of that... have you been to 's Natural Foods? It's in Columbia nad usually has everything... if not, they will order it. Nick seems to have probs with all liquids... even soy milk will keep him up all night nad make him loopy. Even though milk is worse, it appears that possibly Nick's leaky guy lets all kinds of stuff through into his system that cause problems. Things have been nuts and will probably get worse. Nick and I go to Canda on Friday for his allergy shot. Then I think we are looking into chelation. I have been researching it and I just received a study from Rimland and Nick's symptoms are identical to mercury poisoning. My work schedule has been non-stop and I am sure it will increase but I need to continue Nick's treatments. And I promise we will get together... Re: diet >> >> >>>Where do you get Mocha Mix?? Guest guest
- I just got back from 's, actually They have already ordered a few things for me, so I might as well add this to my list. I've also found Roots to be a good health food store (on rte 108). Good luck with your trip to Canada. I only know one person who did the chelation and their son ended up having 2 grand mal seizures. I'm not sure how he is doing now or if they continued treatment. YOu can reach them at www.bharefoundation.com. Have you tried goat's milk? Some kids seem to do fine on it - I even found some goat's milk ice cream at 's. My kids get eczema from it (and my little one got the hives) but they all liked the taste of it. I'm hoping they will be able to tolerate it at some point, then I won't have to worry about calcium and getting enough fats into their diet. Hope to see you soon! Guest guest
Why not just use goat's milk, goat cheese, etc? It (obviously) does not have the " bovine " dairy and therefore is more easily digested. We like it because of the higher protein content than rice milk. The rice milk and potato milk have way too much sugar in them. Suzanne From: eahcsc@... Reply- Subject: Re: diet Date: Sun, 07 Oct 2001 12:09:48 -0000 > Vitamite has casein. Guest guest
My kids loved the goat milk and cheese. Unfortunately, two of them developed eczema and one developed hives. I agree that it is a better alternative than the rice or potato milks, but at this point we just limit the amount of potato milk that they can have. Hopefully others will have better luck with the goat milk than we did. On Fri, 12 Oct 2001 17:32:54 -0700 " Suzanne Roelike " <Sroelike@...> writes: >Why not just use goat's milk, goat cheese, etc? Guest guest
Patty, I am going to email you something from the doctor that runs the Eat right for your Blood type. My girlfriend has been following this diet for her type and her Chrones is literally in remission after 11 years! I am an A, he says I should be vegatarian-but good thing chicken and some fish is nuetral, ok to eat! I'its alot like Dr mercolas, just more sepcific. i also should not take dairy and no red meat, which I dont per Dr kolbs protocal. Dr Kolb has told me to take in some soy, as well as other doctors, but I had a hard time with that, after I read about the negative effects on your thyroid. See, I am stuck in a hard place, one I have a thyroid disease (like you also) and soy is sopossed to be an endocrine distruptor, but I do have a suspicious nodule (that is all the markers for future thyroid cancer- I only have one and it is large, but thankfully not noticable yet) and soy is sopossed to be great at fighting off future cancers, and is a wonderful source of protein, and anti oxidants!. So I was so confused, but after reading this article on my blood type, (A and O are very prone to cancers and also A with all thyroid issues!) , and after I talked to Dr kolb, I started drinking soy shakes for breakfast. Read it, its interesting!!!! Soy kinda makes me think back to when they said a few years ago- Dont eat eggs! now, they say they are wonderful for you! (which they are , but I no longer have hardly any of them due to the silcone protocal) read it, tell me what you think! Love, julie
