Guest guest
For both my kids, magnesium deficiency caused this issue. They wouldn't let us touch their hair anywhere close to their ears during hair cuts. Supplementing magnesium citrate has greatly helped overcome this issue. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Not liking/tolerating haircuts is very common among kids on the spectrum, often due to sensory issues (noise of the scissors/clippers, shininess/flash or cold of the scissors, smell if at barber shop, etc.) Does he have auditory hypersensitivity? Handle Institute has some exercises to help deal with sensory issues that might prove helpful. Check http://www.handle.org/index2.html or The Fabric of Autism by Judith Bluestone Appendix B. Guest guest
Really? My son is horrible! (I guess that just adds one more symptom to my suspicion of ASD.) It takes 4 adults to hold him down to get a haircut. > > Not liking/tolerating haircuts is very common among kids on the spectrum, often due to sensory issues (noise of the scissors/clippers, shininess/flash or cold of the scissors, smell if at barber shop, etc.) Does he have auditory hypersensitivity? Guest guest
It helps my 8 year old son with ASD when he can see his 14 year old brother get his hair cut first. Then when it is the 8 year old's turn, as long as he can see himself in the mirror while his hair is being cut, combed, etc., he doesn't get scared. Sometimes he likes to have a small hand mirror he can hold onto also. Good luck. > > > > Not liking/tolerating haircuts is very common among kids on the spectrum, often due to sensory issues (noise of the scissors/clippers, shininess/flash or cold of the scissors, smell if at barber shop, etc.) Does he have auditory hypersensitivity? Guest guest
My son didn't like sissors, but he is doing fine with cutting machine, really important to find something that child likes and promice he will have it when its done, may be certain time or place also important, I cut hair at home myself, he probably wouldn't be as easy in a public place Natalia Sent from my BlackBerry® smartphone with Nextel Direct Connect [ ] Re: DOES NOT COOPERATE IN HAIR CUT Not here. We have tried everythig and only once did it work to have him watching his personal DVD player. The other times, it did not even work. It is torture for us all. > > > > > > Not liking/tolerating haircuts is very common among kids on the spectrum, often due to sensory issues (noise of the scissors/clippers, shininess/flash or cold of the scissors, smell if at barber shop, etc.) Does he have auditory hypersensitivity? Guest guest
Still takes four people at home also. We are going to try again since the removal of casein, but I am not convinced that will help any. He has sensory issues with washing hair and face also. I am convinced, now, this is part of his autism. We do not have an official label yet, but if it walks/acts/looks and talks like a duck, then it must be a duck. > > > > > > > > Not liking/tolerating haircuts is very common among kids on the spectrum, often due to sensory issues (noise of the scissors/clippers, shininess/flash or cold of the scissors, smell if at barber shop, etc.) Does he have auditory hypersensitivity? Guest guest
This was most definitely sensory - adrenal related with my son. Haircuts were traumatic, accompanied by screaming fits, having to hold him down. The scissors, the noise....Finally, Jan on this board educated me about adrenal problems and the wonders of ACE. It used to be a haircut or using the food processor would send my son running, hands over the ears, screaming under the kitchen table like a war vet with PTS. The wind on his face would drive him nuts even. After adding ACE in sufficient doses, it was like someone flipped a switch or something, one day we just sat him down at the kitchen table for a hair cut, braced ourselves for the inevitable screaming, and he just laughed and watched a dvd while we cut his hair. We were amazed. Now he sits beautifully and we can even take him for professional haircuts. He just turned five. Guest guest
I used to cut my son's hair at night while he was asleep He is now 6.5 and we were able to get his first hair cut that was by a professional and wasn't absolute torture. This was his 3rd haircut by a professional- the first was terrible " the woman who cut his hair said to me " bless your haeart " - refering to his behavior- she felt bad for me. The second was better but he shook and screamed the whole time. So in between I cut his hair at night. Finally we gave it another shot and he wasn't thrilled- kept asking " okay, just one more minute? " " done now? " trying to get down. But it was actually a decent haircut and I wasn't shaking and nauseous when it was over. Yea!! One small step for the kid! There's hope SHannon > > > > > > > > > > Not liking/tolerating haircuts is very common among kids on the spectrum, often due to sensory issues (noise of the scissors/clippers, shininess/flash or cold of the scissors, smell if at barber shop, etc.) Does he have auditory hypersensitivity? Guest guest
For us it is not just the screaming. That is not the bad part. He literally has to be held or he is gone. He sounds as if he is in pain with blood curdling screams, squirming to the point we are scared he is going to break a limb. He is very strong. Guest guest
This used to happen for us just *brushing* hair. I would almost have to sit on her. Try EFT - I used to drive one hour, one way, and pay some good money to learn how to do it correctly. It really can be applied to several different areas of your life as well -- trauma, abuse, addictions, anxiety -- and for physical issues, too. It helped me immensely, so I started using it with the kids, and I have used it with several emotionally charged kids, like my nieces, with great success. A good thing to do, if you often has stressful days, is just go through the day's events while tapping. The brain is usually positive (especially with little ones) and so you will often have a positive affirmation regardless of whether or not it is said out loud. I did this with Savannah after school before bed. Check out the video, as it will make much more sense. It isn't the main site's video, but I like the guy http://www.tapping.com/play/Tappingcom/5958460266411651546.html This is the main site and this link has good info about kids: http://emofree.com/tutorial/tutorofifteen.htm Warm Regards, Summer McFarland 1.22 HEAL KIDS 1.224.325.5437 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ ------------------------------------- Over fourteen years of organic search engine optimization, marketing and design.
