Guest guest
Vicky, I've no idea. I've never been down this path. I don't know where to start to get a diagnosis or anything. Any ideas? Trancey, epilepsy is a definite possibility - I think he used to have absence seizure and I also think they're gone though I can't be sure of either of those to be honest. Where would I go to find out more? Caroline, it's quite hard for me to describe without using the word manic. In fact I've just paused for quite a while trying to think of how to describe it. The best I can come up with is he's often distant, quiet and not there, he can come round quite suddenly and be very present but that can also escalate to a level where he's gone back to his own world. He's also ridiculously, ridiculously sensitive to everything which I don't think is evidence of bipolar, just thought I'd add it. I don't really want to worry you but it might be absences. Are you able to bring him back ("awaken") him from these episodes? Does his muscle tone or posture change? emily > > > > > > > > > > > > >> > > > > > >> > > > > > > Hi, Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of bi-polar?> > > > > > > I'm just wondering (with no knowledge/ background whatsoever) if Tom> > > > > > > might be bi-polar.> > > > > > > He spends long periods being v. distant (maybe months) and then comes> > > > > > > back to us but also does definitely get manic. Guest guest
Thanks , I don't want to rule out absences. Where do I go to check for sure?? However, I do feel that he used to have absence seizures and that they have now gone (I can't be sure of either of those " facts " ) The periods of distance that I am talking about are not absent exactly (God I'm absolutely awful at describing Tom)more just not with us - and this is the NORMALITY. He is usually unhappy though less than prebiomed. He is sometimes here and present and with us but that is the rarity. He is fairly often what I would describe as manic. I think it's manic, I would say it's definitely not hyper. Guest guest
Sara, for biomed and bipolar, you might want to google Stoll and high epa fatty acids. Also, of course, metal toxicity is implicated. most of our kids are on omega 3's but we would tend to use ones that are higher dha. Kids need the dha more than the epa. But for bipolar, they've found that very high epa is much better for producing benefit. Guest guest
Thanks Anita. That's great. Tom is on MaxDHA. I'll definitely look this up and switch back to the MorEPA that he used to be on. Guest guest
Hi Sara, according to one high profile DAN doc biopolar (and schizophrenia) are very prevalent in asd, the symptoms esp come to surface in adolescence. there are lots of overlaps in pathologies and etiologies of all these disorders so no surprises there. Good news is that this doc is saying he finds those much easier to treat than autism. yes even schizo, from one mum whose asd son had definitive symptoms, was child's play to treat compared to autism (kids is more or less recovered now). I'll send you some info from her Sara, also have a look at this http://www.jbrf.org/juv_bipolar/index.html FAQ section is also very good... nx > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi, Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of > > > bi-polar? > > > > > > > > > > I'm just wondering (with no knowledge/ background > > > whatsoever) if Tom > > > > > > > > > > might be bi-polar. > > > > > > > > > > He spends long periods being v. distant (maybe months) and > > > then comes > > > > > > > > > > back to us but also does definitely get manic. Guest guest
Sara, EPA is the active fatty acid. DHA is necessary but more in fetal and early child development. EPA is the anti-inflammatory of extraordinary means. If I were on a Desert Island with no fish in the sea, that would be the ONE thing I would make sure I brought with me:-)) EPA! (Make sure though that there's a little DHA, GLA and vitamin E (non-soy based) in there as well. A good anti-oxidant additionally would really help. And cut down drastically (but not eliminating altogether) on any Omega 6 based oils.....They interfere with Omega 3 metabolism.Subject: Re: bi-polarTo: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Date: Tuesday, 2 November, 2010, 21:41 Sara, for biomed and bipolar, you might want to google Stoll and high epa fatty acids.
