Guest guest
Arava can make you lose your appetite. It is activated in the stomach. That is how arava works. It can make you lose weight also. Yours, Deborah

I forgot to mention it was my 9 yo that was on the Abilify. But my 12 yo is on 100 mg Zoloft and 54 mg Concerta. (He's 67 lbs no matter we do.) That is much better, but not 100% great. Lots of artwork is still done during class. Not doodles, full blown masterpieces. LOL We are adding 10 mg short-acting ritalin after school to see if that will help us (and I do mean US) through homework time. In December, we tried to come off Zoloft to Wellbutrin to see if we could get more Dopamine action going. But his anxiety came back really bad, prompting several alert emails from the school. He was visiting the Quiet Zone several times a day, several times a week over the most ordinary stuff. So he switched back to Zoloft and it's fairly well under control again. Zoloft was the first thing he was on, a year before the Concerta. It was for what was deemed depression. But he has recently had his coding changed so it's Anxiety Disorder--NOS to go along with ADHD combined type and PDD-NOS/AS. Guest guest
I am new to the group but my son has been through a rainbow of meds since the age of three (he will be seven in April). When my son was taking concerta he took 72 mg each morning. We had to quit taking Concerta because insurance quit paying for it and I could not afford it after a few months. We swithched to medadate which only lasted to lunch time. We have just replaced the medadate with adderral (under recommendation of his new psych) which is awesome! Traver's teacher sent home a note last week saying she did not know what I did, but it worked!!! Traver was taking Abilify with the medadate which worked well initially in leveling his moods but the new psych seemed almost mortified that a child his age was taking the Abilify and took him off immediately. Abilify is used off label for many kids but apparently is marketed for schizophrenia. In any case, the new psych and my family physician were both unhappy with the idea of him taking Abilify. Abilify was replaced with Imapramine (anti-depressant also used for bedwetting). Traver has many wetting/soiling incidents each week and since the Imapramine has been added his accidents have gone to maybe one every three to four days. Bed wetting has also decreased to almost none. I know that some stimulants work well for some children while having no effect on others. I was very happy with Concerta but the Adderall is even better!!! Lower dosing and better effect. The whole thing is that most medications prescribed to children on the autism spectrum are off-label, aren't they? Most are not FDA approved for children at all, or not approved for children with the condition you are targeting. (Zoloft is FDA approved for OCD, but my child took it for depression.) I always say it is " part science, part roulette spin " ....certainly more towards the roulette spin at times! But that's the best we have at this time. It's harder to measure success in ASD since improvement is subjective. But it's not impossible, there can be a WOW factor. We look for that WOW factor. If we're not seeing it, we move on. I had blood tests done on my son after Abilify to check blood sugar, cholesterol, and electrolytes. They are okay, although they can be a problem after that type of med. At least those are measurable! Jackie
