Well I have just seen the special (?) on TLC showing total knee replacement.

No wonder this knee hurts. As of right know,I will be an official NS (no

show) on Friday for this so called knee surgery. This stuff is barbaric, out

of the dark ages. No thanks, I will just bite the bullet.

Chickening out hugs,

Yes Debs, I had my rt knee replaced 2and1/2yrs ago at age 46...and it has

been great ...I had an arthroscopy done 18months earlier and was cleaned out

, left with bone on bone and worn a uniloader brace for that 18 months ...I

was scared about having it done but I was put on the continual motion machine

right out of surgery and then was in hospital for 3 days and then to my

surprise my medicaid ins offered to send me to a nursing/rehab center for a

week....(all I had at home were my teenage children to help me and the drs

felt I needed to go to be where i could have help). It was wonderful and I

learnied how to walk with a walker(dont do crutches..horrible)and how to do

stairs , and how to move around the kitchen and bathroom easier.....My dr

told me I was one of the fastest comebacks he had had...and figured it was

bcs I was so young. My range of motion b4 leaving the rehab was almost all

back..they were amazed. And so I went to PT for like 10 sessions .....My knee

is such an improvement over what I had ...no pain...and sure beats the

brace......I still fear falling down(I was tending to trip and fall a lot

then...but I took care of that where now I dont try to walk and talk at same

time (LOL...seriously)...MY stepfather was 63 around the time of my surgery

and he was really in pain and needed his done ...I convinced him to get it

done and he did but his dr didnt really believe in the continual motion

machine ...but he studied it b4 and told his dr he wanted it so he did that

and he recovered very quickly...my Mom worried cos he is a very overweight

diabetic man...but he came through it all w flying colors...loves his knee,

wishes he'd a done it sooner too.Anyway , I wonder what you saw or heard that

has frightened you into cancelling your appt.Pls reconsider? I think you will

find it is worth it. Judy in AZ

Debs,

The letter from Judy is great and I hope you read it with all the

compassion and love it was obviously written with. I wish I understood more

what your reasoning is and hope you will share that with us in time.

I will support your right to make the decision to cancel the surgery

because we do need to take control of our medical care. However, I am

praying that your doctor talked to you and we will hear that you changed

your mind again.

As an old surgical nurse, I can tell you that I have seen other people back

out of surgery because they saw something on TV that scared them or they

heard horror stories about failed surgeries. I will never understand why

people will share their bad experiences but not the good ones.

In the last few months, I have had spinal surgery twice - I have seen in

done when I was in nursing school and I know what it is like. I knew the

risks and complications that could result from the surgery. Because of my

medical background, I also knew how wonderful the results could me. I went

into surgery believing I would have those same wonderful results. I have

absolute faith in my neurosurgeon and knew I was in the best hands in the

world - I really do trust him that much. That faith in your doctor is the

first step to overcoming your fear and reluctance.

From what patients have told me, the most important thing after knee

surgery is the rehab. That is also the hardest thing. You have this

wonderful group of people who will be here to encourage you and cheer you

on when you need it - you are so much luckier than most people.

Rather than thinking about what they do during surgery, think about how

wonderful you are going to feel when you are able live your life with the

freedom from the pain you have been dealing with. My surgeries may have

been different but the end result is the same I want for you - freedom from

pain and getting your life back. Right now, the hardest thing for me to do

is not overdoing because I feel so much better than I have in months - I

hope and pray that you have changed your mind and will feel like I do in a

short time.

BTW, if you still decide against the surgery, I will be disappointed but I

will still care and I won't judge you. I am confident that the same can be

said for every member of this group - we will be here regardless of what

you decide.

You are always so generous with your hugs, I hope all the hugs of

encouragement from this group have helped you today.

Debs, what have I missed. Do I understand you are cancelling your

surgery? I had my right knee done 3 yrs ago and it was the best thing I

could have done. My recovery time wasexcellent, hardly laid up atall. I

had put if off for 2 years until my knee was bent sideways, bone on bone.

Just to be able to walk again is heaven for me.

What made you change your mind?

Pat,

I have read all the letters to me & my letters to Me Mom . I have

called the ortho & got myself put back on the OR schedule. When I give my

word, I do stand by it. has been searching for so long for an answer &

was so brave to overcome her fear of the ERCP that my little knee surgery is

but a drop in the bucket. I am so pleased with my right tkr, but that

left tkr, is the one that is giving me fits of pain, to a point where I want

to take my husband's swiss army pocket knife & cut it out myself. The ortho

is starting arthroscopically & will attempt to fix whatever he can. If more

needs to be done, I will have to cross that bridge when I get to it.

Thank you for your concern & support. Sometimes fear & frustration cause me

to make some unwise decisions. Thanks for understanding.

Gentle, Building Courage, Angel Hugs

Love,

Debs

Hi Judy,

I too have had both of my knees replaced. The right knee in 11/99 & the

left knee in 9/00. It is the left knee that has not healed correctly. I am

in constant pain, more pain than I was in before the surgery. I was just

upset that I had to have yet more surgery on this knee when I thought after

the tkr, I wouldn't have to go back to surgery for these knees for 10-15

years. I have called the ortho & had myself put back on the OR schedule.

Thank you for your concern & encouraging words. They helped me make the

right decision.

Gentle, getting less afraid, angel hugs

June, don't fear I have called my ortho & had myself put back on the OR

schedule. This surgery is not for total knee replacement, this is following

my last total knee replacement in the left knee. It apparently hasn't healed

correctly as I am in more pain now than I was in before the surgery. He is

going to go in with an arthroscopy at first to see if he can repair the

problem, if not, then that will have to be addressed.

Thanks for your love & concern. It really helped when I was afraid &

frustrated.

Gentle, trying to be positive, angel hugs,

Debs; Glad to hear you are going ahead with the treatment. Don't feel bad

about being indecisive. Fear is natural especially with pain involved. They

tried artho on me first and it worked for about six months, but the joint was

already gone. I plan to get my rtk this summer. I would be wonderful not to

have to use a cane anymore...Then we have to worry about the hips... I wish

you well, keep us posted dear and remember we are here for you.

Debs,

If I had watched a TV show on knee replacements before mine were done, I may

have done the same thing - CANCELLED! I've since seen parts of it, and can't

watch it. It is definitely barbaric, but worth it in the end. Some people

actually stay awake and just have an epidural. I know I couldn't handle that.

I'm glad you had a change of heart and are rescheduling. Try to keep a

positive attitude and hope that whatever is wrong can be fixed arthroscopically.

It really is scary, but try not to think about what they are going to do. Only

think about the end result, and hopefully it will give you the strength to get

through it.

hugs,

Debs: The surgery does sound scary but believe me the end result is

wonderful. I felt an immediate relief from the pain as soon as I woke up. The

worst part for me was the PT afterwards. Having to lift your leg was really

painful. Your muscles are so sore from the surgery. I didn't even have to go

to rehab, I did so well. by two weeks I had 75 degree movement in that knee

and at the end of a month I had 90 degrees. I went to store (love to shop)

with my walker a week after I was home.... Felt like a new woman... You will

too. Thinking of you.

Blessings,

Jan

Hi Leena,

I'm just wondering if, instead of surgery, would KAFOs work for you?

(Knee/Ankle/Foot/Orthotics) I don't know if you're using them now or not. Here

is a picture of what I mean.

http://www.cascadeorthotics.com/html/kafo-knee-ankle-orthosis.html

I can put you in touch with a CMT surgeon in Los Angeles. Perhaps you could

email him and review you situation. Let me know.

orthopedic surgeon in India, for me as I have walking difficulty due to abnormal

gait and high knee hyperextension. While walking, my knees come closer to each

other (Valgus knee). He has also suggested that after the surgery I will have to

use knee bases with my AFOs which I'm using for last 25 years.

Leena,

I just had my right knee replaced did the left a few yrs back and I should have

done it 10 yrs ago, my legs are straight still have foot drop, and hyperflex but

you can not hurt the implant and now my knees don't touch and my legs are

straight, I should wear orthos but choose not too but I do not look weird or

crooked.
