Guest guest
Well, I have Asperger's and it doesn't sound like any symptoms I ever had as a child. But it is true that children with Asperger's reason things completely different. The main " problem " is that the reasoning skills are so fast that mistakes happen in the mental processing. But forgetting? It seems more like she has no awareness of her surroundings. I used to get that too. It can be the result of preoccupation with thoughts. Or maybe she is of the type that she won't do anything she doesn't understand. If she does have Asperger's it could be died in with her comprehension. Try this: Explain to her why, simply and clearly, like an adult. And I don't mean your reasons. I mean, give her a complete understanding from the ground up as to why she should do such and so. Just try it and see if it makes a difference. The reason I suggest that is this: All children with Asperger's have an over developed region of the brain directly behind the prefrontal lobe that is responsible for the need to understand before accepting. In an extreme case, if it isn't completely and totally understood than it is not real. From: Wilma <wilma1866@...> Subject: [ ] Asperger's??? For example: All the girls in school were to sweep the floor and make their own piles to pick up. My girl went around picking up all the piles when she was not suppose to. (The girls wanted to pick there own piles up.) Out at breakfast, my husband asked if he could taste my girl's pancakes, she put picked a piece up in her hand it slapped it (innocently) on the table in front of him. My brother kept telling her to not step on a certain part of the patio he was putting together, she just kept forgetting and stepping on it. She loses one sweatshirt a day. Honesty. I buy them at the thrift store because we go through so many. I was reading up on Asperger's and it sounds familiar and I was wondering what others thought? Guest guest
Elliander Eldridge Boy, you hit it on the head for my guy! My 11 year old read a book out loud to me, we were hoping he'd get a better test score. 50% only!!!!! This is a kid that reads non stop, remembers amazing facts, tid bits, you'd be amazed, but we seem to literally " flunk " every test he takes or do amazingly well. One week a perfect spelling test (excellent memory skills), the next week, 12 out of 30. How can this be!!! We are having focus issues here. We lost 17 pencils the first 3 days of school. I just now make sure he has 2 pencils in his case daily. Most days those are gone. He has a locker and moves from class to class. We've lost 2 sets of colored pencils now. Doing pretty good on clothing. Eventually gets back home. We also had to have his lock changed to non operational, he can not work it. We got a lock to practice at home, he doesn't get it! Not tying his shoes yet either. Scary! He's like the absent minded professor! Thankfully well liked, nice little boy and polit. Boy, I pray some day it will all click. It's a lot of the same conversations over, and over, and over...... Tammy [ ] Asperger's??? Guest guest
My son is like this. We had a serious audiology and speech eval this year because I was convinced he had Auditory Processing Disorder. Processing speed is quite good, actually, but we were told he has a 'working memory' deficit. Unable to efficiently hold short term information for completion of complex tasks. We do *all* of our active thinking and problem solving in working memory. It is also involved in transfer of info to long term storage and retrieval. Now WHAT to do about it is another story! They tell us to keep him constantly focused on the information put in front of him... which translates in school-speak to 'put him on meds'. Sigh. pam > > From: Wilma <wilma1866@...> > Subject: [ ] Asperger's??? > > Date: Tuesday, November 16, 2010, 4:40 AM > > > > My girl just doesn't get things and people are always yelling at her. Guest guest
Pam With my guy, they see that he's so amazedly bright, scary, really. Yet.....boy, it shows when he feels like it or applies himself????? I'm not sure. He did/does have an auditory processing disorder. When he was little he like knew all his colors, this was 3.8. So they would say give me a red M & M, no problem, now give me a red and green M & M. He couldn't do it. " Got get your shoes. " He couldn't do it! Was stuck on go. He's a genius world book reader kind of guy, loves facts. I keep telling school there's no miracle " drugs " for this. I so hope I'm right! Guest guest
have you tried social stories with her? Visual aids work wonders to help cement ideas in our kids heads. The pictures along with the words to explain really do help. You can take pix if you have a camera, draw stick figures and make them silly and fun. Either way they will help with the social issues as well as every day things like brushing teeth, setting the table, etc. nancy j. Guest guest
social stories, they really do work. and they are fun for the kids too because they are the " Star " of the book. If you have a video camera, film someone tying shoe, step by step, and narrate each step. That's how our guy learned to tie his shoes, and our nt 4 yr. old learned too, just because he loved watching the " movie " . nancy j.
