Guest guest
What about decreasing the amount and putting them in something like apple sauce, yogurt..pudding...are there any healthy jello type things out there you might can gradually acclimate him tomore again...our taste buds do change... -- [ ] Help! I really need advice quick on how to get supplements in to my son Long story short, my 3 yr old has suddenly decided he does NOT have to take his supplements. I have been mixing them into a container of baby bananas for the past 1.5 yrs with no problems. He is absolutely refusing to even open his mouth. If I try and force it in he will throw up. Does anyone have ANY suggestions for me. He has not had them for 2 weeks and we are noticing a decline in language and behavior. I need to find a solution fast. I have tried putting them into a spoonful of jam, peanut butter, and mixing them into liquids with no luck. He is smelling anything I try to give him now and if it remotly smells like vitamins he will reject it. I have also tried putting it in a syringe and going that route but again he will just throw it back up. He has an incredibly sensitive gag reflex. Funny thing is that he will still eat his NIGHTIME bananas that has his probiotics and fish oil in it. I don't want to try and put everything into his nightime because his probiotics are so important and I can't have him refusing them too. Please help!! Thanks in advance. Guest guest
He is GF/CF so the yogurt/pudding is out. He won't eat the soy pudding. Also. tried the applesauce. He basically wont even try anything in any type of food during the day. > > What about decreasing the amount and putting them in something like apple > sauce, yogurt..pudding...are there any healthy jello type things out there > you might can gradually acclimate him tomore again...our taste buds do > change... > > > > > -- [ ] Help! Guest guest
Is he chelating? It sounds like he gained his sense of taste/smell. We had bouts of supplement refusal with my son off an on. Usually, I pinpointed it down to one supplement in particular that he didn't want and when I removed that one, he took the rest. And I did begin tasting the stuff I was expecting him to take and some of it was atrocious. He didn't mind in the beginning but once we began chelation and biomed, after a while he seemed to get his sense of taste back and began to refuse stuff. I did not force my son to take them because as you saw...he's just vomit it up anyway. I'd keep giving the nighttime stuff he takes willingly. Stop all the others for a few days and slowly try to add them back one at a time until you find the offender. For my son we had refusal problems related to B complex, magnesium, vitamin C and finally his Spectrum Complete Powder. He said the mag tasted " weird " . He was right, it did. So I bought flavored mag glycinate instead of citrate and hide it in yogurt. The C is bitter to my son (well most people actually) so we bought flavored C powder and put it in Vitamin Water. We don't give him the B's at all anymore. They were making him hyper around the same time he was refusing them. I don't know what it was in the Hypoallergenic Spectrum Powder but he began refusing that. So we gave up and just gave the individual vites he'd take. I have found that sometimes children have an " instinct " of sorts about what they need and they tend to refuse what they don't. My daughter was always forgetting this one vitamin, no matter how many times I reminded her to take it. She didn't need it according to her muscle testing. Now that my son is 7 I am able to test him using kinesiology (muscle testing) and I when I tested him for the stuff above....it came out that he didn't need them or not those forms anyway. Like he tested ok for one form of magnesium but not the other...the one he was refusing! You may have to look at flavored liquids, gummi vites, flavored powders..etc. More palatable options. Bananas don't hide much for covering supplement taste. B vites are the worst to try to hide. I don't know if you are chelating him or not but permanent gains come with that rather than supplements. So he's get those gains back anway with or without the vitamins. I'd try to find other ones he'll take. Guest guest
AS always, I totally agree with Jan. My son won't take his MV anymore so I got separate vitamins and put one at a time in apple juice or pear juice. Straight in a syringe so I make sure he will take it. As for the barfing, once I removed the B's he didn't puke anymore. I am starting chelation next month, so I figure he probably doesn't need the B's after a time anyway. As for mag, I got the liquid from brainchild, it's the only one I can get down him. We stopped a lot of C because he has some oxalate problems anyway and it made it worse. Stuffing down the supplements is a chore, so I try to get most in with food, juicing, veggies in muffins etc.... It's hard to deal with a kid that is getting better LOL, it's like I give him the missing zinc back and all of a sudden he can taste the horror of the supplements. He is also more 'with it' and decides when he wants to do anything (like any NT 3 year old would do). I got used to the unresponsive , now I have to learn how to deal with the new . Which is a great thing! Hope that helps, let me know. W. > > > > Long story short, my 3 yr old has suddenly decided he does NOT have to take his supplements. Guest guest
I mix all of my son's supplements with water and stevia, and give him with syringe, he has no problem taking, when I was trying to hide it in foods, and he will catch it, he'll refuse to take it then. Now I just tell he needs to take, and he knows I won't hide anything in food, and that makes it easy on all, since I'm sure he took it Natalia From: fashunjen@... <fashunjen@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Help! Guest guest
My neph takes the powder vitc from Kirkman, powdered therbiotic complete from Klaire's & amino acids from kirkmans and I just measure it per recommended dose on a plain sheet of paper & fill empty capsules therefore he never has to taste it. It does take a lil time but he gets every bit. I always prepare doses the night before school. He eats a piece of toast w/jelly & will take all of his supps with no problem. We did start off with a pill shooter 1 year ago that we no longer need. Valencia Sent from my iPhone On Feb 22, 2010, at 10:16 PM, " fashunjen@... Guest guest
I had to pull out the B 50 - my kid puked up supps everytime. I can add individual B's if I only do one at a time and rotate them. He may not get as much, but he's getting more than he would if he vomited. My secret is BRIBERY. Or " positive reinforcement " . He has little tiny treats he gets after his 4X per day vitamins. A small bite sized piece of legal chocolate, or one allergen free all natural gummy bear. Otherwise he never gets any such food, so he's willing to eat the supplements to get the treat. Not the ideal way to do things, but desperate times call for desperate measures. > > > > What about decreasing the amount and putting them in something like apple > > sauce, yogurt..pudding...are there any healthy jello type things out there > > you might can gradually acclimate him tomore again...our taste buds do > > change... > > > > > > > > > > -- [ ] Help! Guest guest
Thank-you to everyone! He is considered " typical " at this point. He is about 95% recovered. He does and likes to be in control of everything now. I am going to try and get him to swallow pills but not sure if it will work. We have seen a slight decline in behavior so I am assuming he does still need them. I will try and take out the b's and see if that works. Ive tried lots of different bribes with none working so far. It does smell really badso I don't blame him at all for not wanting to eat it. I will report on what happens tomorrow. > > > > > > What about decreasing the amount and putting them in something like apple > > > sauce, yogurt..pudding...are there any healthy jello type things out there > > > you might can gradually acclimate him tomore again...our taste buds do > > > change... > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > -- [ ] Help! Guest guest
Were your kids taking B's that were yeast free? When I chelated my son, I switched to yeast free B-complex by Ecological Formulas and he tolerated them very well as opposed to when he was taking B's w/yeast in them.
