Guest guest
Can anyone recommend a website or books to teach science to a kindergartener with very limited language? Thank You Andree
Guest guest
I suggest you buy the ABBLS-R, it is an assessment and a curriculum. It will provide you with the basic skills that your child should learn. There is a lot you can do without expensive curriculum. For example, I use plastic insects and flash cards for teaching simple math. The ABBLS-R gives you the ideas and you come up with the manipulatives to use. I do supplement my son (who is in 2nd grade) with ABEKA curriculum - I love the readers - but if I had a little one, the ABBLS-R would be plenty to keep him busy. Guest guest
For the situation you describe, I think projects (doing things) would be a good approach. I googled " science projects for kindergarten " and came up with a number of sites including: http://www.educationaltoyfactory.com/kindergarten_science_projects.htm Good luck with this. Guest guest
I would look into videos of " Mr. Wizard. " http://www.mrwizardstudios.com/ Your child will probably not get much if you read or just tell him things. Show him. We teach science here by doing experiments. You can get ideas for the experiments form the above or from Bill Nye the Science guy and the like. You can make an erupting volcano cake: http://www.cookingcache.com/dessert/eruptingvolcanocake.shtml?rdid=rc1 Look up the TEKS from the TEA website for early grade science and choose which objectives you want to teach your child. then find an experiment that will " show " him, so that he can understand. You might want to look at 474 Science Activities for Young Children (Early Childhood Education) You can find it at Amazon.com.
Guest guest
You can start off with teaching about animals. My kinders loved learning about them and there are all kinds of national geographic's on youtube. I taught them the 7 continents first so we'd have an awareness of where the various animals lived and got out the globe to orient them at the introduction of each new animal. I'd even let them choose what anmial we were going to learn about next. Then they can draw a picture of the animal and write it's name down. By the middle of the year (about now), they were writing sentences about them. You can have your child 'copy' yours if they aren't writing yet independently. You can google or youtube many beginning science lessons for kids. I also taught them the butterfly cycle (they could easily draw it from my drawing) and we ordered caterpillars that turned into butterflies. We kept a journal of this process where they made entries a few times a week along with a drawing. You can order the 'butterfly kit' (just google it - or try ebay - got mine off there). They really LOVED learning about them.
