Guest guest
Is he on a special diet at all? The food craving and night waking makes me think he is intolerant of some foods and has a yeast overgrowth problem. No doubt his gut needs healing. > > hello, > my son is 5 and we've been chelating for over a year now. i've been on a break for approx 2 months and will resume this weekend. lately (over 2 weeks) he seems to be constantly hungry and throws the most horrible tantrums when he sees food cooking in the kitchen or someone else eating.he is non verbal. he wakes up at night some times and runs to the kitchen screaming for food. i really can't be feeding him round the clock. has anyone dealt with this before? >
Guest guest
It definitely sounds like his gut. My son who is none verbal also, wants to eat all the time and in fact I had to build a wall and a door with a lock around the kitchen. He used to not eat anything, then about the age of six he developed an insatiable appetite for anything he could get his hands on. It's the yeast and it wouldn't matter if he could talk, I have heard from other moms who's kids are almost functional and they too get into the pantry or the kitchen and eat till feel sick and they know it's bad to do this and they promise not to do it again, but they do. I think it's pain and when they eat they feel temporarily better, but the pain comes back and so it starts all over again. All I can say....is heal the gut. Many times it's a slow process, so be patient and leave him a snack. My son for instance gets reflux and a couple of crackers at the right time helps him feel better. Guest guest
Is he on supplements? I often think of continued hunger as a sign of starvation. I don't mean this in the regular sense. When I see people (even myself) overweight, I think the person is starving. Obesity and constant hunger are a sign the body is not getting the nutrition it needs. This overwhelming hunger is the bodies attempt to try to fill that need. Is he on a good diet with good nutrition? He may need one of the specialized diets for ASD kids, and you will have to research to see which you want to try. For us, the gf/cf/sf diet brought about dramatic change in our son. Putting him on supplementation also helped a great deal. Constant hunger can also be a sign of yeast overgrowth, as well, I think. I think yeast make people crave sugar and bad carbs because that is what feeds the yeast. If this is the case, eliminating sugar and other bad carbs will cause withdrawal at first and then the person will stop craving sugar once they get the yeast under control. My son had horrendous tantrums before putting him on the diet. For him, his diet is very tied to his behavior. Even now if he gets any of these offending proteins, he goes from being Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde. This hasn't happened in a year and a half, but the last time it did, his behavior was VERY bad. I was a total skeptic when I was first told about a connection to diet, but our lives were in turmoil with our son constantly waking up and throwing temper tantrums. I really couldn't go anywhere. If I did go anywhere like to the store, I had about twenty to thirty minutes before major meltdown. For us the diet changed everything.
