Guest guest
When my son got to this point he learned to swallow pills very easily. I had tried on and off for over a year to teach him to swallow pills with no success at all. Once he started refusing his " yuck cup " as I called it, I told him " swallow this and no more yuck cup. " For capsules I'd have him put the capsule in his mouth. I would hold a cup with a straw in it at about chest level so he had to bend his head down as if he were looking straight at the floor. He'd sip from the straw. The capsule floats on the liquid to the back of the throat and goes down without even being felt. For tablets I'd have him take a sip then look at the ceiling, they'd fall right to the back of his throat when he looked up and swallowed. He mastered this in about 2 days because he was motivitaed. Before that we tried 2 different special cups, special straws, a spray to lube the capsules, sticking them between the cheek and the gum, putting them in pudding/yogurt/any food. Nothing worked. I have been mixing them into a container of baby bananas for the past 1.5 yrs with no problems. He is absolutely refusing to even open his mouth. If I try and force it in he will throw up. Does anyone have ANY suggestions for me. He has not had them for 2 weeks and we are noticing a decline in language and behavior. I need to find a solution fast. I have tried putting them into a spoonful of jam, peanut butter, and mixing them into liquids with no luck. He is smelling anything I try to give him now and if it remotly smells like vitamins he will reject it. I have also tried putting it in a syringe and going that route but again he will just throw it back up. He has an incredibly sensitive gag reflex. Funny thing is that he will still eat his NIGHTIME bananas that has his probiotics and fish oil in it. I don't want to try and put everything into his nightime because his probiotics are so important and I can't have him refusing them too. Please help!! Thanks in advance.
