He was denied coverage 5 yrs ago based on ASD dx alone. > I'm just wondering when Anthem BCBS gets my son's MD records and they notice he is not fully vaccinated (missing k-garten boosters), will that be an issue? When I was applying for individual coverage about 7 years ago, when both my husband and I were self-employed, my son was denied coverage by all the insurers I contacted, except BCBS. But the monthly premium JUST FOR MY SON was $800, and was basically a major medical policy only. The other five of us were offered a standard policy for about half that monthly premium. I eventually enrolled my kids in CA Healthy Families [a state program] and just bought the insurance for me and my husband. Good luck. Guest guest
Ugh. Well, I believe I was able to get him transfered to another Medicaid program (WI). I was hoping we could just add him to our policy since none of our current MDs take Medicaid and we pay all care out of pocket. Things have changed in WI, regarding insurance, since 11/2009. I believe that applies solely to an insurance mandate to pay for behavioral therapy... and I think that might work against us. What company wants to insure an ASD child when they think they'll have to pay $50K/yr for ABA??? $800 is insane. What absolutely stinks is that my son hasn't even seen his MD for a few years because he never gets sick enough to go! Healthy, healthy boy with Autism. Seems the insurance companies don't believe those children exist. Thanks, Pam > > We are trying to get my son on our Individual Plan (self employed) because he is losing his Beckett Medicaid due to no longer meeting level of care (means he is getting better, but screwed b/c still on spectrum). Seems the insurance companies don't believe those children exist. My son hasn't seen a doctor for probably close to 8 years now. Here is my good news for you. Last summer, I accepted a position with a mid-size law firm. The underwriting for " small group " is significantly reduced from what was required for self-employed insurance. I had to complete a 10-question form. I called the HR rep for my firm, and asked her to check with the insurance agent. I told her that if they looked all the way back to when my son was 3yo, they would notice an " autism " diagnosis in his file. But, he was 13 now, and he has never been to a doctor for anything related to autism since his dx when he was 3. The insurance agent told her to tell me that since he has never been " treated for autism " , I did not have to disclose it on my underwriting form. [Yes I kept a copy of that email, so they couldn't come back at me later for lying on the application.] My son's autism dx has provided no benefits for him, only problems. I regret having him dx, but it does look like things are improving. Good luck. Dana

Guest guest
My niece was denied cleft lip surgery at Shriners in Chicago because she was not vaccinated. Her family does not have insurance and Shriner's had okayed her for the surgery knowing she was unvaccinated then changed their tune refusing about a week before the surgery was to take place. She ended up having the surgery elsewhere. S S ------------------------------------------------------------ Put your loved ones in good hands with quality senior assisted living. Click now!
