experience with this Dev Ped? Now: Socialization

Gotta jump in here when I see the " socialization " concern about homeschooling

arise. I think this is because people not familiar with homeschooling think of

it in terms of how it was in the beginning, when they were few and far between

and isolation was more the rule than the exception.

Now it is really the opposite. So many people homeschool, and then form clubs

for both academic and extra-curricular reasons, that the students socialize as

much as any parent wants to arrange for.

Big studies have been done that show homeschooled children are more happily

socialized than conventionally schooled ones. That they join more clubs when

they become adults, become more active politically, and that they choose to

homeschool their own children because they were satisfied with it.

For my own dds, (and having taught for years myself), I think, for all their

problems, they are developing much better self-esteem than if they'd been in a

regular school. Not having to deal with daily teasing or bullying is priceless.

,

Yes, we have one of these home-schooling clubs out here. Thank God! We

don't go to the academic classes but we are invited on any field trip we

wish to attend. We go to all the parties they have and special events when

we can. It is a great group to have available to us. Sometimes we all get

our kids together at a park.

Getting social times has not been nearly as hard as I thought it would be.

In summer he goes to the public pool for Red Cross swimming lessons and is

in a group class. His attendant has two kids close in age, so we all will

do social activities int he summer.
