Guest guest
, You can do the program part-time as well. There are many parents that implement a part-time sonrise program after school or even after clinical ABA therapy programs. Now, sonrise will tell you not to mix ABA and sonrise but there are families that do this successfully. What they will have you do is to set up a special playroom for your child, where he will spend the entirety of the therapy hours. This playroom with consist of toys (which they will give you a list of ones they approve of) snacks, drinks, and things that they like (with the exception of anything electronic, tv, videogames, ect) You will have yourself and other volunteers come in for one hour periods. The room will have to be set up in a certain way....preferred items and toys up high on shelves, where the child cannot reach them and therfore has to communicate to get them. This strategy worked well for my son. He was completely non-verbal and this helped him acquire words. Now, because my son regressed very dramatically a few months after we started, I decided to throw in some ABA. He improved with that as well, and although we have continued using son-rise strategies, we do not keep him in the playroom all the time, as the full-time program would suggest. We have also incorporated some floortime strategies, which are very similar. My son now speaks in short phrases and single words, although he still relies a lot on prompting. I think the reason most parents don't know about developmental modalities like sonrise and floortime, is mostly due to political reasons. ABA has had a big stronghold on most areas and creates a lot of jobs. Anything different that comes up has to fight really hard to get recognized and is generally not funded by regional centers and other funding agencies, so parents usually turn to whatever they are also going to get financial help for. I think there are some interest groups as well that really go out of thier way to trash anything that challenges them. à know when my son was originally evaluated for services (of course by an ABA agency) they really tried to discredit sonrise when I asked about it. Sonrise is great if you have the money and time to invest in it. I wish you luck!...and let me know if you have any other questions. ________________________________ From: <cano_iu@...> Sent: Wed, January 26, 2011 1:01:52 PM Subject: [ ] Re: Feedback on Son Rise Program???  thank you for taking the time to answer me back!!!!! I really appreciate your honest realistic response:) It looks like regardless you did gain many good things for yourself and you child! Skills, support and more! My concern is that if I go foward and do the training will i be able to implement it at home even part time because I do have a 1 and 1/2 yr old as well?? If you don't mind i was wondering the following: Is it tough to do the strategies at home???? Do you have to make a lot of materials to use when teaching or are they provided??? What kind of specific communication results did you see in child and how verbal was he/she before?? My son says single words mainly. Also how quickly did you see results??? Do you have them in other therapies as well??? (my son has done ABA in the past[i know its the total opposite of son rise} and now he's back at private montessori style school with a personal aide in the class) I have stopped speech right now because as you already know traditional therapies do very little for our kids) Thank you so much i really appreciate your help:) You know what I was wondering??? Guest guest
Hi, I did the son rise program with my son for a number of years.. I would recommend you see the movie, Son Rise The Miracle Continues or read the book by Barry Neil Kaufman.. I feel if you are going to spend the money, you should read and see the movie first.. If you like what you see and read, I wouldn’t waste my time on the beginning training.. If you like the program I would invest in the week long intensive . With you and your child… this to me was an amazing experience and taught us how to implement and use the program with our child.. I hope this helps you in your decision. Guest guest
How did you raise funds to do the intensive program? I also did the start up and I am implementing a son-rise program in my home. However I would like to do the intensive and I would like to raise funds but don't know where to start. Guest guest
Hi Florence, if you look at the Son rise website or call the office and ask to speak with a representative or counselor they can give you some ideas that some of their clients have used.. Also ask about maybe a partial scholarship and how to apply.. Think about what would work for you.. I had half the money and asked my Mom for the rest. You could do the same by writing letters to family members, explaining what happened to your child and requesting funds to invest in his recovery.. You could have a barbecue fundraiser at your church park or home.. , be sure to advertise if it is going to be a big fundraiser.. You could pick up unwanted items from friends and family members and have a large garage sale several times in a couple of months.. every little bit helps.. If you want to get to the intensive at the Son Rise institute, you can .. just work hard and don’t give up.. I hope these ideas help you.. and good luck..
