Guest guest
If it is being done under the supervision of a physician, you can deduct high medical expenses. As far as I know, you cannot deduct this stuff if you are going it alone. But I am not some kind of tax professional. Guest guest
I have experience. If you have a DAN physician (or any other physician who will write the letter) You have them write that the supplements are medically necessary. Then the way it was explained to me is that you can take off the difference between what the supps cost you where you buy them (we get ours at Kirkman's or vrp) and what the supps would cost at Wal-Mart. The same goes for the special diet. We went gf/cf/sf. We have the urine tests that show his opiate peptides were very high before beginning the diet. Then a test to show they came down a year later but were still high. Then we removed soy. Then a year later we retested, and his opiate peptides were in normal range. With a doctor saying that the diet is medically necessary, you can take off the difference between what these safe foods cost compared to food comparable from Wal-Mart. In addition, if you home school, and you have physician letter stating that home schooling is medically necessary... (in our case our son was sick 50% of the time while in public school with one infection after another) then you can take off a portion of what it costs to home school. This includes mileage in the case of going to pick up medically necessary foods and mileage for home schooling, as well. Some one correct me if I have been misinformed, but this is how we have done it. I figure the total bills up separately: supps, diet, home school, and then have a CPA handle it. He is pretty knowledgeable, so I know he will tell me if we can't. As we all know, every little bit helps. You may also take off medical bills (the portion not covered by insurance), but you can also take off medical miles and prescription miles, so keep tabs on that. Our pediatrician was very understanding about the home schooling and agreed and wrote the letter. Our son has been much healthier since starting home school, though I am sure AC chelation, the addition of GSE and ACE have helped to this end, as well. Keep good records and keep all receipts.I have been audited before (years ago) and it is the good records that can make it an okay experience. I have to say it was nothing like the horror stories you hear. The agent was very nice and polite and matter of fact. the facts are the letters form physicians, the receipts, the mileage record. I keep a notebook each year and use those dividers with pockets in them and keep these things organized.
Guest guest
I met with a tax specialist in NYC years ago and he told me that little did most people know that the IRS has a much broader definition of a medical expense than insurance companies. He told me that supplements and most alternative health practitioners and treatments were deductible. I've been itemizing and deducting the whole shebang ever since, and never had an issue. I always double check with my tax person every time, of course, but she's always conferred. best wishes, Fiona > > > Hi All, > I just heard that the expenses related to our kids are tax deductible. > Is this true? > Does anyone have experience with this ? > > Any inputs is appreciated. > Thanks > 3yrs old ASD ... will start cheltion soon > > > >

Guest guest
Your experience is very encouraging. We have health insurance, but as many of you know, the coverage isn't that great nowadays and we still have to pay thousands out of our own pocket. I wonder if it's worth the trouble (receipts, itemizing, etc) to start the log book for next tax season...... Guest guest
We put in the maximum allowed (10 K) into a flexible spending account which is sometimes offered by employers. This is basically tax free money that can be used towards health related expenses. Obamacare is changing regulations as of Jan 1, 2011, meaning more paperwork. I believe starting in 2012 the maximum amount will be $2500. We get a doctor's letter for supplements and so far that has worked. This has helped us maximize our funds. Guest guest
I am really bad at tax (never did it in my life). Is FSA better than deductible generally? Guest guest
I think it is worth it; I believe you are credited 30%. Someone else may be able to chime in. Guest guest
Depends on your situation. FSAs are a use or lose and I have never been good with them (when I had one).  I worked for a large Fortune 500 company in 2009 that said the maximum for FSA was $5,000 when I asked for a larger amount. This company had so many restrictions and policies in place concerning the FSA that I decided not to use it. This company had Aetna which covered my daughter's therapies and I just wrote off the supps. So it really depends on what you have now, what the company offers, etc.  S. > >From: April itz <april@...> > >Sent: Mon, February 14, 2011 1:25:41 PM >Subject: Re: [ ] Re: OT : are expenses related to treatment tax >deductible > > >I am really bad at tax (never did it in my life). Guest guest
I started itemizing when this all started. I keep a notebook and all the receipts and record of mileage, educational costs, seminar costs, even books I buy to help my son. It has helped us a lot to do this. I don't know if we would have made it without getting some of the taxes we paid in back. There was a LOT insurance hasn't paid for over the years. There is still a lot not covered by insurance and Medicaid. If you have to see a doc that is not on your insurance and doesn't take medicaid, then you have to pay it, so deduct it.
