Guest guest
Yes. For my son its oxalate related and its the cocoa powder that causes the problem. White chocolate is just fine. Guest guest
What do you use instead of potatoes on the oxalate diet? My child fits the descriptions and eats mostly high oxalates. Not sure how to start. Deb > > > > Anyone find that chocolate causes rage? > > Deb > > >
Guest guest
We use the baby red potatoes, peeled and boiled. That lowers the oxalate level to medium. For fries, I make them out of butternut squash, turnips, jicama, and rutabaga and I make turnip and radish chips. He gets french fries on occasion, but its rare. The Trying Low Oxalates Group is the best place to learn about the diet. Its been a huge help for me and my son. Other than that, the best advice I can give is to ease into the diet, especially if the diet is high oxalate. Its not an elimination diet like GFCF and going directly from high to low can be very unpleasant. Guest guest
Chocolate has a very poor ARI rating. Kenny > > Anyone find that chocolate causes rage? > Deb >
Guest guest
I just wanted to add that I just figured out (last night), That my sons' reoccurring cough and stuffy nose may be due to chocolate. Not sure what to do other than remove, I'm looking into anything that my help him to digest easier. His cough had gone away completely after 6 weeks, however after I started putting him 3 6 9 In oreos his cough came back within 2 days. Ugh! I love chocolate but it may need to be banned from the house if I can't find a solution. Guest guest
We're using a lot of digestive enzymes but I do think chocolate is a problem. I buy white " oreo " type GFCF cookies and he does not rage on those. I've been reading on the oxalates and I think my child will benefit from that diet. Guest guest
Yes, when we first went GFCF, I turned to Envirokids Cereals. He liked the Koala Krispies, it wasn't long before we knew that chocolate wasn't working for him and that he couldn't handle cane sugar either. Guest guest
We had problematic symptoms with oxalates at one point, but chelating fixed them. I think one important thing is to cut out calcium, most of our children (I think) are too high in it, and supplemental calcium causes problems for them....in doing that, I would also double, triple, or quadruple magnesium. > > > > > > > > Anyone find that chocolate causes rage? > > > > Deb > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Well the oxalate information says that calcium should be increased. I hope chelating will fix all these problems. We're on round #11 and it's going very well. I split the dose in half to 12.5mg ALA. I think I like that dose better although I'm worried it might take longer. Guest guest
We take calcium, its actually recommended with the LO diet, but we give before meals it to bind the oxalates in the GI tract and then only give small amounts away from food for absorbtion. Magnesium is also very helpful. He takes about 500 mg. Chelating with ALA has been a big help as well, but for us the diet has been the biggest difference.
