Regarding the post by Dr. Mercola earlier this week, " Eating This

“Healthy†Food While Pregnant Can Lead to Infant Deafness, Blindness or

Mental Retardation… "

The gist of the article is that the best option for Omega-3

(EPA, DHA) is krill, rather than algae, fish or fish oil. The

reason against algae or other plant-based sources is that they

require more steps in body to get to beneficial form (short

chain to longer chain fatty acids), and this means you either

have to take much more or for some people process is

inefficient. The arguments against fish and fish oil are: (a)

mercury in much of fish today except small ones like sardines;

(B) overfishing of oceans and aquaculture pollution; © oil

has to be broken down in gut and then attached to

phosphatidylcholine in liver to be bioavailable - most

ingested is eliminated and not used. Krill benefits: they are

small crustaceans, low on food chain so not affected by

mercury bioaccumulation; sustainable food source; oil is

" bound in a phospholipid matrix, ** making it far more

bioavailable than fish oil. In fact, nearly 100 percent of the

DHA and EPA in krill oil are immediately available to your

body. " ; oil contains* important antioxidant astaxanthin.

A google search gets you info on krill and krill oil. If you're allergic

to seafood, not for you. Astaxanthin comes from the algae that the krill

eat.

Anyone have experience using krill rather than fish oils?
