Guest guest
Just a guess on the ammonia scent after exercise is that she's in ketosis - eating too little carb, and burning ketones for fuel. Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile ammonia My patient complains that she smells ammonia after walking for exercise. Vinegar taste in her nose. What can it be? Guest guest
i thought so too, but it is not a keton smell. Look what I found and that explains everything: http://www.drmirkin.com/archive/6187.html Ammonia Odor Produced by Helicobacter Report #6187 Some people smell like ammonia when they exercise. A report from Japan explains why. To smell like ammonia, you have to eat a lot of protein or be infected with a germ called helicobacter. Many weightlifters eat tremendous amounts of protein because they mistakenly think that it will make them stronger. The food you eat contains carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Of the three, only protein contains nitrogen. The body has no way to store extra protein, so when you take in more protein than your body needs, your liver knocks nitrogen off the protein and the nitrogen is eventually converted to ammonia and passes through the sweat glands and kidneys. Some people smell like ammonia when they do not take in large amounts of protein. An article in the February issue of the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology showed that many people who smell like ammonia are infected with helicobacter, a bacteria that knocks nitrogen off protein also. When helicobacter grows in your stomach and intestines, it causes ulcer symptoms characterized by belching, burping, a sour taste in your mouth and a burning pain that often become more severe when you are hungry and better when you eat. More than 80% of people who have duodenal ulcers are infected with this bacteria. If your sweat smells like ammonia, ask your doctor to do a blood test for helicobacter. If you are infected, you can be cured with a one week course of metronidazole, amoxacillin and omeperazole. Guest guest
That's interesting. Was she tested for H. Pylori before surgery? If that's what it is, there's a high risk of ucler after surgery and risk of perforated ulcers. The other suggestion from the report you attached still suggests ketosis, I think. Excess protein/not enough carb tend to go hand in hand. The by-product of ketone breakdown for energy, particularly in aerobic exercise, is nitrogen/ammonia. I'm not familiar with a ketone smell, but I know that individuals in ketosis will complain of acetone and ammonia breath. Thank you for sharing the report! Guest guest
There's a blood test and a breath test for H. Pylori. I think the breath test is the better of the two. One may be more expensive than the other, though. Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile ammonia > > > > > > My patient complains that she smells ammonia after walking for > > exercise. Guest guest
Stacey, I expect has given you something to treat the bacteria, i was just curious as to what she was using for it. > Not sure what prescribed for the ammonia as at last consult there were > lots of new jobs to get through which I had to stop half way through due to This does not sound like too much meat as long as your child is having other stuff with it, but if on its own it may well be. I give calcium citrate with meals to bind with the oxalate to help take it out of the body harmlessly thro the gut, have you tried this at all? Guest guest
Hi Nikki, Not sure if calcium nitrate is the same as just calcium? But I have tried introducing calcium supplements twice and within hours Elliot is really giggly so has said to leave it out for a while. I'll have to discuss it with her. Thanks again. Guest guest
Hi Stacey, there are several forms of calcium, it is the citrate one that helps with preventing oxalate formation and i also use magnesium citrate for the same purpose (and as a stool loosener!)Other forms of calcium may also help by binding with the oxalates in the gut so they get removed from the body harmlessly. Here is a list of suppliments that Owen suggests to help with this issue: http://www.lowoxalate.info/supplements/supplements_pos.html Nikki x > Hi Nikki, > > Not sure if calcium nitrate is the same as just calcium? Guest guest
FWIW, My daughter's oxalate levels have been high since we began testing years ago. Calcuim supps have been a disaster for her as they seem to increase neuro irritability and lead to seizures. We tried the citrate forms of minerals, low oxalate diet etc - could not do the suggested probiotic due to sensitivity to milk. I finally quit this route. Last spring her oxal levels came back in nl range. The only thing I can think of for the improvement is that I added vit K2 to her daily routine. > > > Hi Stacey, > > there are several forms of calcium, it is the citrate one that helps with preventing oxalate formation and i also use magnesium citrate for the same purpose (and as a stool loosener!)Other forms of calcium may also help by binding with the oxalates in the gut so they get removed from the body harmlessly. > > Here is a list of suppliments that Owen suggests to help with this issue: > > http://www.lowoxalate.info/supplements/supplements_pos.html > > Nikki x > > > > > > Hi Nikki, > > > > Not sure if calcium nitrate is the same as just calcium? Guest guest
Hi , Calcium supplimentation seems to be a problem for quite a few kids on the spectrum unfortunately, i posted the list to give other options to try to help with this problem. Luckily for us my ds tolerates calcium. I'm glad to hear that the K2 sorted the problem for your daughter. We also give this to our ds and it has helped him enormously. My feeling is the oxalate issue and Vit K2 problems are intertwined somehow, but don't ask me how, way too complicated for me!!! I haven't tested ds oxalate levels recently but going by his health and behaviour i'm pretty sure they are low. Guest guest
When my son had elevated ammonia, he would head bang and was irritable. I found out his ammonia was at 70. I had to start watching the amount of protein in his diet and I gave him Yucca with high protein foods like red meat and he hasn't had elevated levels in a long time. I confirmed the ammonia level at the time with a blood test and I check it every 2 or 3 months. > > How can I know if ammonia is a problem for my boy? Guest guest
At the time most of ours was from nuts, nut flours, mainly almonds. We were on the SCD and had no idea about the high protein causing ammonia. K. > > > > > > > > > > How can I know if ammonia is a problem for my boy?
