Guest guest
Had my son at the dentist today. They were wonderful and so patient bur he still was a mess. They need to do fillings and said oral sedation will not work for him. They want to do IV sedation with an anesthesiologist. I spoke with him after I got back and he works with kids with autism frequently. He said he would use either Propofol (sp?) or Versed (sp?). Does anyone have any experience or info on either of these? My info I had saved was on y laptop that crashed. Thanks so much!
Guest guest
November 2009, our then 8 year old son who has autism had an abscessed tooth and several cavities. We always brushed his teeth, but he would never open his mouth wide enough for us to see what we were doing or to floss his teeth. I was terrified when the dentist started talking anesthesia, but I knew our son could not sit still to have the tooth pulled and fillings done. Our son has had such bad reactions to so many pharmaceuticals and supplements that I thought anesthesia would just do terrible things to him. I believe Propofol is what they used for him too. That sounds very familiar. Versed was just a little teaspoon or two of some red medicine that he had to drink to get him to the point where they could insert the IV, I think. Worrying about it was one of the scariest things ever, but once it was over, he was our kid again by the next day. No lasting, long-term affects and they put sealants on all of his molars so that he would hopefully not get anymore cavities. I know the idea of it is really scary, but for us it turned out to be nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. He slept a lot that day once we got him home and was grumpy and a little weepy. I'm not sure, but I think he may have thrown up on the 1 1/2hr. car ride home. Anesthesia makes me sick too. He was fine, though, by the next day. We all survived it and I think the world of the dentist who was so patient with all of my worries and concerns. Sounds like your dentist is experienced and will take good care of your son. Best wishes. > > > Had my son at the dentist today. They were wonderful and so patient bur he still was a mess. They need to do fillings and said oral sedation will not work for him.
