Guest guest
Well I am READY TO RUMBLE to Gettysburg!! Just a thought, for those who are challenged as far as making a quilt square: In our church we make " Banners " which hang from a pole, out of felt. You could do the same for your square. First of all, I wouldn't let the name " quilt " challenge you as far as sewing. This is just going to be a white or beige (for a quilt it is normally " muslin " which is cheap, or cotton or broadcloth) square, 2 feet by 2 feet. The outer 4 inches on each side are going to be a border of some fabric. For a quilt one would use " calico " which means a cotton fabric with small flowers. Then you would put a meaningful thing or things on the white (or beige) part - for example I am trying to do dance shoes, as I miss dancing and the dance-aerobics I used to do. I will try to fashion other symbols, too. Other people might put just one symbol. The " quilt " part of it is all of the little tiny stitches they use to sandwich the layers together - usually cotton batting and then a fabric for the " backing " = back. But I don't think anyone is really going to quilt their square. Or put the batting layer in. The Church banner might be a possibility. You could make a 2 foot by 2 foot square of a light colored fabric. Then with your HOT GLUE GUN you could glue a border of some fabric, could even be a solid color felt. You could cut some symbol(s) out of felt and HOT GLUE it(them) on. Or you could use PUFFY PAINTS. For the ties you just buy enough double folded BIAS TAPE at the same fabric store - or better yet - ribbon which is all ready finished at the edges. Two 2-foot pieces for each corner. Just a couple of stitches will fasten it to your square (you could even STAPLE!!). Anyway, that is just a thought. And of course your name and whatever other personal info - I may put " Bit on XX, 19XX " and " Diagnosed in XX/99 " in stitching but you could do it in puffy paint. At church they cut a lot of modern looking letters out of felt - too advanced for me. OR GLITTER - that would be really hot - with your name in glue and then glitter it as a last step. Can you tell I am/was a Girl Scout leader (took a year off). I would offer to do a square for you but right now am backed up (we all are). Anyway, our curch has the most glorious banners composed by small groups with nothing more than felt, scissors and glue. I think that would be perfectly adequate for your square. I hope you have used a hot glue gun before. I am always sticking my fingers in the hot glue by accident. Anyone else notice you are clumsier with Lyme disease? Good luck, Jeannine
Guest guest
Leave it to you Jeannine to come through with some expert advice and step by step instructions on how we can make our quilt patches. I am forever grateful to you for posting this, as it has frightened many of us " Non-sewers " I have done some sewing but not creative at all, and my hands don't work well at all, can barely hold a pen without pain and tingling, fortunately can still type though. Filling my med containers weekly is an awful chore. I drop so many of them, and spend most of the time crawling around trying to find them on the floor so the dog won't get them. If we ever move my stove, I bet there will be about 20 pills underneath. My pain meds are so tiny, and since I see a Pain Specialist, and he is monitoring my meds, if I lose even one of those I am sunk! I will print out your excellent advice and take it to the store with me when I go buy my materials. Thanks again, I am leaving the entire text of your post here for those who may have missed it.
