> Letters from Dr. Burrascano to All

>

> Hello everyone!

> As promised, I wanted to let everyone know how my first day of the

> OPMC hearing went (is that proper grammar)?

> Not much was done on this, the first day. There are strict

> confidentiality rules, so I cannot say yet who the state's " expert "

> witness was, nor what he accused me of, but I can say there were no

> surprises at all, and much of it is what we have all heard before, about

> CDC criteria, 4 weeks, etc.

> For me today, it was not at all stressful. Because so little was

> done in terms of actually reviewing the cases, I cannot make any early

> conclusions on the outcome. I can say that I am totally committed to

> seeing this through, not only for my own sake, but for all of you with a

> deep personal interest in insisting that the truth about all aspects of

> Lyme be told. We will never allow our opponents to spread lies for their

> own personal self interests, at our expense.

> My spirits are very good, and although it has been a very long hard

> road for me to this point, my stamina is not diminished. With the

> absolutely fantastic and genuine support from all of you, I have been

> able to prepare well and remain totally positive. Expenses are very high

> (!!!) but thanks to the generosity of SO MANY supporters, I will be able

> to continue at least for the next several weeks. The hearing will extend

> well into February-incredible, isn't it! My next hearing date will be

> November 6, 2000. I will be in touch by then, if not sooner.

> Because of the enormous amount of time I needed for preparation, I

> had not been able to be in my office at all for the last two weeks. I

> deeply appreciate the patience of those of you who have had to be

> rescheduled. I know you understand. Next week will be crazy for me, not

> only in trying to catch up, but also because I will have to take more

> time out of my practice to continue preparations for the next hearing

> date. I have not been able to take the time to read e-mails (the last

> time I checked, there were over 600 unread messages)! so if you

> absolutely need to contact me, the best way is either through the office

> (631) 324-7337, or by FAX. My business fax, on only during regular

> office hours, is (631) 329-0520. My personal fax is on 24 hours a day at

> (631) 287-5403. Please do NOT use the personal fax for medical problems-

>that's what the office is for.

> I firmly believe that truth and what's right always wins out in the

> end. We must maintain our strength, commitment, and keep a clear vision

> of our goals. And remember, until we win, we will not go away!

> May all of you be blessed and have your wishes come true-you're all

> good people and deserve nothing but the best.

> Hugs to all.

> Dr. B.................!

>

> Hello everyone!

> Ever since my OPMC problems were announced, I have been literally

> left speechless by the amazing, deeply touching, and very, very much

> appreciated support from all of you. I think about this all the time.

> What I would love, is to have each of you send to me your picture,

> along with a brief account of your personal story. I would like to make

> an album with all of you in it. I would place your picture with your

> story. It will be something I will keep forever and cherish always.

> Obviously, this does not have to be done right away, but it is a

> project that I would like to undertake. Because many of my supporters

> are not on my e-mail list, especially since some do not even have

> computers, please spread this message out among all of your contacts.

> We are making history, and a photographic record like this, plus the

> stories, will result in a priceless archive that will mean a lot to me

> and my family.

> It would be best to mail these to my office because the mail

> delivery there is better suited to handling photos without damaging

> them. The address is:

> ph J. Burrascano Jr., M.D.

> 139 Springs Fireplace Road

> East Hampton, NY 11937

> Again, thanks, and best wishes to all!

> Oldest Living Bacterium Identified

>

>------------------------------------------------------------------------------

>

>--

>

> WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) Oct 19 - US researchers have identified what

>they believe to be the oldest living bacterium ever discovered, according to

>a report in the October 19th issue of Nature. The spore-forming Bacillus

>bacterium, which was found in salt crystals in Texas, is estimated to be

>about 250 million years old.

>

> " The implications and significance are pretty incredible, " lead author Dr.

> H. Vreeland, of West Chester University in West Chester,

>Pennsylvania, told Reuters Health.

>

> For example, salt crystals on long-dead planets like Mars could still have

>living things on them, Dr. Vreeland explained. Also, he said, the discovery

>supports the idea that living things " could survive in space long enough to

>move from planet to planet " or even from solar system to solar system.

>

> The ancient organism, which is being grown in the laboratory, will allow

>researchers to ask " better biological questions " than they can with fossils,

>according to Dr. Vreeland. The study of this and other samples may lead to a

>better understanding of how organisms evolve, he added.

>

> It will also be interesting to see, according to the Pennsylvania

>researcher, how organisms are able to live for so long and if it is common or

>a relatively rare occurrence.

>

> Although this sample is the oldest living organism identified so far, Dr.

>Vreeland said that he and his colleagues have found other formations

>containing organisms that may prove to be 500 million years old.

>

> In the report, the researchers speculate that salt water crystallized

> around

>the spore of the bacterium, trapping the living organism.

>

> In an accompanying editorial, Dr. R. Parkes, of the University of

>Bristol in the UK, writes that the findings " are the best evidence yet for

>the extremely long-term survival of microorganisms. " The discovery raises

>several important questions, according to Dr. Parkes, including how organisms

>can survive so long, whether spores can be immortal and whether there are

>other such deposits of ancient bacteria on Earth.

>

> However, Dr. Parkes notes that the results need to be confirmed by other

>researchers before they are completely validated.

> Bulletin Board....

> Submitted by: Lymeawareness@... (Brite)

>

> Several requests were placed for a special shirt for the rally so here's

>what I've put together:

>

> 1 - mid weight white sweatshirt with logo (any size you need -

> all priced in)

> 1 - bumper sticker

> 1 - Lyme awareness ribbon lapel pin (the heavy one)

>

> cost $15.00 which includes postage

>

> The logo will be the bright green Lyme Awareness Ribbon (large on the front

>-- at least 8 " in height or more) and " possibly " a message.

>

> Suggested messages are:

>

> 1) Lyme Disease Awareness

> 2) Lyme Disease - Find a Cure

> 3) Lyme Rally (and in smaller print New York City, November 9, 2000)

>

> the date and city could be added to any message

>

> The idea is to be seen with a simple message and in unity with one another

>in appearance. This is a great opportunity to get the Lyme color out there

>for recognition and a simple message for others to see and remember

>(including media). The bumper sticker is a plus if you want to " stick it " to

>your back or where ever you choose. The Lyme awareness lapel pin should be in

>EVERYONE's closet!

>

> Time is VERY SHORT on this project. I will have to have these printed and

>back in the mail to you on or before November 3rd and 4th so you'll have it

>before traveling to the rally.

> If you are interested -- please send in your request right away. I may

>print a few extra shirts but no more than 10 or 20 max. So far requests have

>come in for 50 and I just figured this out last night (Sat night).

>

> We've been instructed that nothing can be sold or handed out at the rally.

>(We were and are still in hopes that the bumper stickers will be allowed to

>be handed out at the rally -- hopefully free -- we're working on that.)

>

> If you want a shirt, please send name, address and the Size(s) needed. I

>will confirm ALL orders-before-sending to the printer. When your order is

>confirmed, instructions will be provided where to mail your check unless you

>want to mail it now with instructions by mail. If so, make check or money

>order payable and mail to:

>

> Lyme Awareness, Inc.

> P O Box 20107

> Bowling Green, KY 42102-6107

>

> PLEASE remember to state your size and include your email address in case

>there are any questions about your order.

>

> This project is being offered at cost (shirts, printing, art work, etc.)

>plus postage. Any proceeds above cost will be donated to Dr. B's legal

>defense fund through FAIM. Any cost overruns will be 'eaten by me' for

>volunteering to do this project. (reluctant grin)

>

> If you have interest, send questions or inquiries to LymeAwareness@...

>or reply to this message.

> I will do my best to get back to you ASAP. I WILL be leaving for the EICS

>conference in Kansas City on Thursday and will not return until Sunday the

>29th late, late, late.. (it's 10 hours one way).

> I may take the lap top -- don't give up on me, I'll get back to you.

>

> This will be the only message you receive and I apologize again if you've

>already received the info. (It is so difficult to learn real names and screen

>names of the same person.)

>

> Of course if you are not going to the rally, you may still order a shirt if

>you like.

>

> Thanks and C ya there!!!!
