Guest guest
Asked my LL Chiro about the changes in my spine since my new X-rays revealed extensive changes. Try to relay to you, in laymen's terms, as I understood what he said. Basically, he said ANY chronic infection wears down the bone layers. He described it like a worn place on a piece of fabric...not holes, but worn places. The chronic infection destroys the calcium levels, which is what causes the " wearing. " Toxins from the infection irritate the nerves and cause them to fire improperly, and interfere with central nervous system functioning. He has explained to me in the past that he has particular trouble with Lyme patients because of how Lyme affects the central nervous systems. Difficult to keep the CNS functioning properly, which isn't evidenced this much in other patients. In my case, the long-term infection (beginning in 1958) has also worn away the protective covering around each vertabrae, causing the spine to shift and settle (causing the curvature), and has exposed the nerve endings. This makes me much more sensitive to pain, and contact with surfaces such as a mattress, chair back, seat cushion, etc. My pain doc says that each vertabra is not insulated and is so close to the skin surface, and this causes my constant back pain. This pain radiates all accross the back and around the front rib cage. The curvature in my lower spine has caused the tailbone to shift sometimes up to four inches (usually two, at most). Unnatural posture, one shoulder higher, puts further stress on lower and upper back. Shortens one leg and causes me to " stand 10 lbs heavy " on one leg. When this happens, I'm usually totally dependent on the cane, whereas I can get away with not using it except for standing support or walking in open areas most of the time. Plus, the side-to-side " twisting " effect of the soft chord that is supposed to run exactly through the middle of each vertabrae causes more pain sensation and nerve pain. I see my chiro 3 times a week. I wouldn't be functional, mobile, as pain-reduced, or relatively cane-free without these treatments and rehabilitative therapies. I take far less pain meds and have better sleep, less muscle tension and skin and bone pain. Missing an appointment will put Humpty Dumpty Rose back in a non-mobile, high-pain state. Not a fun way to live, but I'm glad to have the boost. Also, he said he is not aware of any studies to show that long-term antibiotics cause calcium deterioration in the bones, but said my LLMD would have a better awareness of this than he would.
