Guest guest
, I really urge you not to use frontline (and advantage)- it almost killed my cat. Many cats have been killed with these, or have seizures. It is so toxic that a friend of mine who is chemically-sensitive, can get sick just be petting an animal that has been treated with them. I give my cat brewer's yeast, nutritional - I put it in her food. It is good for other things too - she has a beautiful coat. She's an indoor-outdoor cat, and I've never been bothered with fleas. I also use a flea comb to catch the occasional flea, she likes being combed, I use that time for bonding. If there are fleas in your yard you can buy nematodes which will kill them, and not hurt you or your pet. I've never used DE. (don't know how to spell it either!). I'm a little scared of it, as they instruct that one should wear a mask when using it so as not to inhale, then what about the kitty? But I have read that it is quite effective. If you do a search - put in non-toxic or natural remedies for flea control - there are many other things out there. I would avoid frontline and advantage or anything similar. They don't tell you about the adverse reactions. My vet recommended it. I wouldn't touch it. good luck, ellen > > Does anyone know anyway to treat pets besides using frontline? Guest guest
I have used DE - diatomaceous earth - giggles. It was great. Fleas fall off animals into carpet and are dehydrated to death. Then vacuum them up. I felt the same way until someone told me how great it was. Reapply after shampooing the carpet (forgot the first time). Worked better than the 4 bombs I set off in desperation. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of rasheedaas Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2011 8:42 AM Subject: [ ] Re: OT: pets n fleas ?'s , I really urge you not to use frontline (and advantage)- it almost killed my cat. Guest guest
Now I'm remembering why I did not use DE, the warning to not breath it in...so on carpet, vacuuming, walking, etc would make it air bourne to some extent. Yes, if it's slightly scratchy in microscopically size particles, seems it could do lung damage so yes, my thought was what about cat lungs, so close to the floor. Usually nothing is without some problem, if you want to kill something, tools usually aren't harmless. I'd like to get nutritional yeast in, that sounds good but my cat will not eat moist food, just kibble. He will go days without food waiting for kibble, my vet said in exasperation after having cat for a few days post surgery. She holds out, so there isn't anything to mix it in to. She won't even eat steak...just her hard little things. She used to be someone else's cat that I inherited but I guess that is all she ever got so nothing else is 'food' to her. Anyway, thanks for the info. Guest guest
Be advised that DE is nasty stuff! I used to use it on my dogs, but won't anymore, due to it being a fine dust that you shouldn't breathe or get in your eyes (or your animals). I consider it very harmful, for that reason. It also dries out your pet's skin -- big time. Lots of scratching. I treated my house once (several years ago) & will NEVER do that again. What a mess! That microscopic fine powder was everywhere. I seriously am still finding areas of my house with powder attached to it (drawer slides, hangers in the back of a closet, etc.) It also blew up my Dyson trying to vacuum it up. Borax is supposed to do the same thing (in your house, not on your pets) & doesn't float through the air. You can also buy a product called Fleago that is comparable for using in your house. Guest guest
I had no problem with it - just keep animals off carpet for a day or two. You can put it on wood, but when you vacuum , my guess is most will come up....maybe let it sit for awhile with no pets around. Put it where the fleas hide. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of bbw Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2011 12:58 PM Subject: RE: [ ] Re: OT: pets n fleas ?'s How much do you put on carpet? Guest guest
Be cautious with DE. It is very fine powder but still can scratch and cut, which is how it kills bugs. You don't want to inhale it. I have used it along baseboards to get rid of ants in the house and it worked beautifully. deb > > > > Does anyone know anyway to treat pets besides using frontline? Guest guest
Yes, this is why I did not use it for fleas. The pet noses are so close to the carpet. From: alicia.colon@... <alicia.colon@...> Subject: [ ] OT: pets n fleas ?'s Date: Friday, January 7, 2011, 12:00 PM  DE kinda sounds like fiberglass! What is it normally used for aside from people putting it on their pets? Is it used in farming?
