How do you survive until disability is approved?

I went to apply for disability and was told that I couldn't even apply until I

hadn't worked for 6 months. So I went to social services and told them I am not

able to work anymore because of medical problems and to ask what I qualify for

while I wait out the time it takes to get disability. I was told there isn't

anything except maybe food stamps. What does everyone else do to survive until

disability is approved?
