If you'd like to encapsulate your bulk herbs, 1stchineseherbs.com says

Japanese Knotweed in a 00 capsule roughly fits 500mg. I can't speak for the

remaining herbs as this is the only herb I purchase in bulk. Maybe someone

can comment regarding the others.

Hi, ette and welcome!

I also buy in bulk and I fill my own capsules by hand. You can order them at

1st Chinese Herbs. I get the size 00 caps. When you fill them with powdered

herb they should be approximately 500mg. per capsule. This is the size Buhner

recommends in the book.

Let us know if have more questions. Everyone here is glad to help.

Blessings,

right amount of bulk herbs?

Thank you! I should have clarified that I am brewing a tea with 5 different

herbs, and drinking it 3 times a day. I once tried to put turmeric in capsules

and it took me so long, I finally broke down and bought the curcumin capsules

ready made. I don't think I would follow through on all that capsule making,

knowing me, but it's good to know about that option.

My doctor didn't prescribe all the herbs in the protocol, so I want to add some,

but I'd like to just add it to the tea. Just not sure how much herb I have to

brew.

Thanks again!

Thanks, Randy. I ended up ordering a number of bulk herb items from 1st Chinese

Herbs today in the cut form rather than the powder form, so I'll be doing

decoctions. I think next time I'll order the powder and try your technique and

also maybe get a capsule making machine I saw on 1st Chinese' site. Thanks to

all who responded!

powders & just add up to 1 tsp (= to 4 capsules) of each herb in applesauce

another suggestion is mixing with a bit of honey. My guess is that the bitter

taste of some herbs (andrographis, catsclaw) might get stronger in an acidic

environment like applesauce. Just try what works ...

actually, my 00 capsules hold 900-1000 mg of knotweed, and for catsclaw it is

around 900 mg.

capsules are not expensive, if you buy in the right place they cost less than 1

cent per 00 capsule. With bulk herbs costing about $15-$30 per pound for the

most common types, the cost of the capsule is just a minor part of the total

cost.

making capsules is a lot of work indeed; but if you set some time apart to make

capsules once a week or so, you don't need to do any measuring for the other

days of the week. And capsules probably help to keep the herb contents

clean/fresh etc. after they get out of the original bag from the supplier.

herbs put in size 00 caps would be 500mg.

this suggests that same size capules hold the same amount (in weight) for all

herbs, which is NOT true. The net weight of a filled herb capsule varies by at

least a factor 2, depending on the herb that is used. Some herbs can be packed

dense inside, others (e.g. andrographis powder) not at all.

content weight also varies depending on herb source, capsule packing procedure

(the cheap filling machines don't use the capsules very efficiently). I strongly

suggest to check the amount that is used at least once before starting the

protocol. I'm also not in favor of 'measuring' with 'spoon sizes' as these are

variable and can mean something totally different in different countries.

my experience is that a 00 gelatin capsule holds 500-1100 mg of herbs; YMMV.

Hi, I was just wondering if your new doctor in Indiana is a LLMD? If so can you

email me where in Indiana they are located?

Thanks

My first posting to this site, which I just joined. After 5 years of Lyme

Disease treatment, my new doctor (in Indiana) has prescribed herbs from Dr.

Buehner's protocol. Because of my low income, she said it would be ok to use

bulk herbs. I notice in the book I have by Buehner, I don't see anything but

I appreciate any help anyone can be about this! I'm looking forward to reading

more posts.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for straightening us out, Knotweed.

My scale doesn't register that low. What are you using to weigh with?

I use a digital scale purchased from Ebay. They cost about $15-25 and are used

for weighing coins, jewelry, drugs etc.

In this price range you should be able to get an accuracy of at least 0.1 gram

(mine is accurate to 0.01 gram) and a weight up to 50 or 100 grams. In the times

when I studied at university, such a 0.001 gram accurate scale cost about $ 3000

....

For herbs accuracy of 0.1 gram is fine; if in doubt you can alway weigh 5 or 10

capsules together. A more accurate scale can tell you interesting things, e.g.

that a 00 gelatin capsule weighs 0.115 gram, plus or minus 0.005 gram ;-)

sorry, typo; it was a 0.01 gram accurate $3000 scale ... the 0.001 accurate ones

were a lot more expensive.

I checked out the dosage for herb decoctions discussed in this link with Dr.

Buhner. My LLMD has prescribed much higher dosages for me and much longer

cooking times. I'm boiling for one hour 60 grams of cat's claw, 40 grams of

Japanese Knotweed, 30 grams of Red Root, 40 grams of Sarsaparilla/Smilax, and

80 grams of Stephania Root. After one hour, I'm supposed to simmer it for

another hour. My doctor said she was basing this on Dr. Buhner's protocol. She

gave me this recommendation after I said I couldn't afford the tinctures I was

taking, saying that drinking tea is a much cheaper way to go.
