Guest guest
In my herbal opinion I would rather take things that are closer to foods like liquids, tinctures, syrups than caps. I take my cats claw, eleuthro root (siberian ginseng) and sarsparilla (smilax)in powdered forms from 1stchineseherbs.com and mix with a teaspoon of honey everyday and then divide it up by three doses and eat instead of taking caps. I try to make foods out of all the herbs that I take for lyme. I think they assimilate better. > Hi, Herbsilly. How do you measure the amount that would be in a 00 size capsule? That sure would be easier than packing capsules by hand.
Guest guest
, I believe three 00 caps would measure 1/2 tsp of powdered herb, may want to break open and measure with a 1/2 tsp measuring spoon. I am what herbalists call a kitchen witch. Herbs to me are foods with medicinal qualities not medicines. So, I cook my roots in soups, eat my powders in honey, pastilles or in hot drinks, my leaves, stems and bark I make dark infused teas and decocotions for syrups. I rarely measure much and I know those that are " standardized " thinkers might not agree with my philosophy but that's o.k. It's like cooking, you do it so long that after a while measuring is obsolete, it becomes second nature on how much to use. I do believe just like foods there is a time where to much is not good. If we see herbs as foods with medicinal qualities and try not to compare them to pharmmeds then they can become more fun and healthy to work with. I purchased a digital scale that measures accurate to 0.01 gram ($20 or so on Ebay). The amount (weight) of herb powder in a capsules varies by more than a factor two, depending on the herb and how you 'pack' it in the capsule. For catsclaw or knotweed I get 0.9-1.0 gram in a 00 capsule, for andrographis it was about 0.6 gram. The same applies to spoon sizes, they are totally non-standard and I have heard of some serious dosage problems as a result. Just check dosage (or have someone else who is experienced check for you) the first time. After that I don't think you have to worry about exact amounts, because activity varies anyway with herbs, sometimes strongly ... When I start using Buhner protocol again, I will probably take the approach of measuring the right amount for a day and then mix it up with some honey (I used yoghurt before, but that gives a pretty bad taste with most of the herbs).
