Guest guest
Unfortunately your response is correct, but we take any minute level of improvement we can get. Its also imperative that we don't destroy someone's hope......... [ ] quinine and tonic water- Patti I wouldnt trust ANything from Lymenet these days due to a weird bias and the lack of anyone overseeing a lot of crap. anyway as for tonic water--it contains up to 15 mg quinine per BOTTLE?and therapeutic ( medical) doses are 325 mg and higher so its doubtful it can help even if you can bare taking several bottles a day ( youd probably need to consume a nauseating 20 bottles a day) plus itonic water?can cause tinnitus and is BAD during pregancy for many reasons. and just because the larger doses of quinine are effective sometimes for Malaria ( there are now many resistant strains) doeasnt make the drug quinine effective for Babs or other TBDs--let alone the TINY doses in tonic water and be aware many so called tonic waters dont even use that much quinine as the cinchona bark isnt any longer as easily available and its expensive too. the tonic mostly is flavorings that mimic the bitterness of the quinine. did anyone on lymenet bother to post that??? google tonic water warnings, quinine side effects etc before even considering it. The youll have to see which brands even have enough of the quinine still there, if ANY, and then try to con sume the large qwuantities. be well abd be safe Finette
Guest guest
Finette, You forgot to mention constipation as a possible side effect of quinine. Yes, you're right that tonic water doesn't have the same amounts of quinine in it as in the prescription capsules, but it does have about 80mg/liter (you said 15mg/bottle, but didn't say what size bottle). As for tinnitus, I already have it and doubt that tonic water is going to make it significantly worse. Perhaps the effect one would get from tonic water could be related to one's load of babesia. i.e., early in treatment, when you're loaded with it is when you'll actually see some effect. The person who told me about it did say that it made him herx at first and then later didn't do so. And I can say that it has made me herx also. Enough that I'm willing to discuss adding quinine to my regular regimen with my LLMD. I didn't mean that it would cure anyone. But if you drink it and sense that you're getting a herx, you might consider that quinine would add an effective treatment to your babesia regimen. Fotunately for me, I like tonic water, so I've been through 2 liters in 2-3 days. During the summer it's one of my favorite drinks w/a squeeze of lime over ice...yum. Yes, if you don't like the taste of it, (and many don't) and drink only one or two ounces, then it probably won't do much of anything. Tonic water is an easy thing for people to try. If it doesn't seem to do anything for you, then nothing lost. But if it Does do something for someone, it may help lead him/her in the direction of getting well, and isn't that the goal for everyone here? I'd rather risk a little tinnitus and help get rid of the babesia than do nothing and perhaps never know that quinine might have helped me. Tinnitus is one of my symptoms that I would most be willing to live with, but that's just me. Sorry if I wasn't more explicit in my suggestion earlier, but personally, I still don't think it's out of line. And I used to be a pharmacist. Guest guest
Another aspect to consider is that many patients w/Lyme & the co- infections are extremely sensitive to even tiny doses of drugs/herbs, or so it seems from postings I've read. It's really not that hard to drink two 8 oz glasses of tonic water, and if a person did that, they would essentially be drinking about 40mg of quinine, or 1/8 of a 325mg capsule. For those people who are very sensitive or have very high loads of the bug, it MAY be enough to give them a herx. I know it did for me. If it does, then you know that quinine may be a key to your getting better. > > Unfortunately your response is correct, but we take any minute level of improvement we can get. Guest guest
I didnt think (or say) it was " out of line " for YOU to personally suggest quinine--I did say ( and mean) that a LOT of whats coming off lymenet these days requires a lot of scrutiny!! and I added the info about quantity ( brands differ by the way), and possible side effects in interest of being inclusive/complete for those who would be interested in trying it...again nothing personal towards your post content Im wondering about the use of " herx " tho--as quinine is really targeting Babs mostly and Im unsure if anyone has shown endotoxin release from that organism---the term " herx " has really been overused and misused lately to encompass any and all sx worsening even when it cant be attributed to " die off " and toxin release!! with so many entering world of Lyme these days the possibility of confusion has grown to where all of us ( including me) has to be more aware of word usage and what we 'suggest " so that others wont have incomplete or incorrect info!! Be well Finette
Guest guest
Sorry, I just realized that I made a mistake in my last post. Two 8oz glasses of tonic would be roughly 20mg of quinine, not 40mg. My bad. Patti > > > > Unfortunately your response is correct, but we take any minute > level of improvement we can get.
