Guest guest
I'm fortunate in that I usually sleep very, very, very, very heavily now that I'm not working. However, occasionally I can't get to sleep. For me, carbohydrates work on those nights. I slowly eat a rice cake or two and feel calmed and drowsy. Sometimes a spoonful of peanut butter helps me, too. I hadn't heard of anyone else using it, but peanut butter is one of my private remedies for really antsy nights. Guest guest
Another viewpoint on fatigue -- I have AIH, and my lab tests have been normal for months. I'm down to 5 mg of Prednisone. I sleep very, very heavily. However, I still become extremely fatigued when I go out and do anything unusual, no matter how pleasant it is. I don't know if that's normal or if it's just my particular make-up. I sometimes think I must be imagining it, that I'm a hypochondriac, malingering. Then the wave of fatigue hits, and I know I can't be imagining that. I wish I knew why. Harper

About 3:30 or 4:00pm almost everyday, I just have to stop and take a nap, or read or just sit because I can't go on for about 1 to 2 hours. After that I seem to be ok and can continue. I have no idea why either. I wonder if whatever energy producing " stuff " produced in the liver just kind of runs out and takes time to replenish. How's THAT for a scientific explanation--lol. Guest guest
Greg, The fatigue is one of the most frustrating aspects of this whole thing. I can go to bed exhausted, fall asleep expecting to sleep like the dead..but I either wake up on and off all night, or I dream so much (really weird ones) I feel like I have been up all night. And just because I do get up and about every day, the expectations of family and coworkers is that I can do it all like I used to. I have tried to explain this to them... I either get blank stares, or the response (especially from my kids) that it is an excuse. Lately, I feel as if I put on lead boots and a lead suit every morning..and drag myself through the day. So tired sometimes I just want to cry. I can't think clearly sometimes...decisions over (what used to be) the simplest of things is torture; complex decisions...forget about it. And all this in spite of ever improving LFTs. Haven't found anything that helps. I cant eat anything before bedtime due to other problems, so I just stay up till I can't keep my eyes open anymore...at least I get about 1 or 2 hours of good sleep until the nightly show starts. nne > hello everyone, > I know i am not the only one with a problem with fatigue and not being able > to sleep.I am having a hard time getting through to other people that the > fatigue is something I deal with everyday.they can't seem to understand why i > cannot just go to bed and sleep for 8 hours and get up ready to go and tackle > the day.It just doesnt work that way,and i am getting a little tired and > pissed of trying to make someone understand who just wont accept the facts.so > i thought i might print some responses from people with that problem and it > might help if they realize im not the only one.anyway i dont know what else > to do,it is really frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please help. > oh by the way my sleep intervals are about 2 hrs of sleep then up until > whenever then another 2 hrs. and so on and different day to day. > > Greg > > I just wanted to thank everyone who sent advice and words of encouragement. > Both were greatly appreciated. > > I'm sorry about last night. was staying at my Mom's and when she > called about 's toe I lost it. Guest guest
nne; Your fatigue sounds just like what I have been feeling the last couple of months. Not only that - but I am seriously thinking of not carrying a purse around anymore. I just can't lift it and carry it. It feels like 100lbs. My husbands says I have to carry at least my drivers license. Well, I think I'm going to switch to a fanny pack. That way it's not on my shoulders and maybe will feel much lighter. But, even walking into a shop. I can drive from my house to a Subway shop for a sandwich - come home with it and be so totally exhausted that I can't eat the sandwich. I parked 5 feet from the sandwich shop - it felt like 5 miles. Today, my husband and I went to a hobby store. I just about stayed in the van. I didn't have enough energy to walk into the store. But I did, only to hold onto the shelves while he shopped for paints. Let me tell you - that was THE longest 15 minutes of my life. I feel like the slowest person in the world. Slow in thinking, moving, and almost numb from exhaustion. And I still work full-time as a programmer analyst (maybe not for long, eh?) Guest guest
You know, I don't want anyone to feel bad but I have to tell you how good it sounds to have others describe my fatigue. I really thought I was crazy. My counts have all been normal for about 2mo., I'm on 10mg. pred., 600mg. usodial, and 50mg. imuran. My psych. has put me on seroquel which is an anti-psychotic drug in high dosages. Told you all I was crazy. It just knocks me out. I'm just kind of dazed when I'm awake. I am starting to build a tolerance to it. I have forced myself to stay awake all day so I'll sleep at night but that doesn't help. I'm still up at night. It's the weirdest thing I've ever experienced. You're all right, nobody understands it. I think I'm going to make copies of everyones responses so I can show people I'm not alone. I'll make sure to white out names and email addys. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! As you can see, it's 2:00 am and I'm still awake even taking this stuff. Guest guest
I can only agree with all of you, reference fatigue. I went through the insomnia experience when I was on 30mg of of pred per day. As the dosage lowered I slept better at night. I've also stopped working which I believe has helped (less stress etc.). I'm now on 10 mg prednisolone and 100 mg of azathioprine per day but most days feel pretty fatigued. Sometimes it will kick in during the morning but almost every day I have to go back to bed midafternoon. I get pretty distressed if I'm not at home and can't get to lie down. I was at a local produce show on Saturday afternoon, I had to leave the show and sit in the car when the 'hit' came. I wasn't very popular with the people I was with. I'm really sensitive to the lack of belief/sympathy of my family/friends/work colleagues. There are some exceptions, my wife has been a great support to me during this illness. It's just the knowing looks, and 'everyone feels tired sometimes' comments that get to me. I think I'm going to have to come terms with it though. The person who posted that people may be in denial in their reactions is pretty close to the mark I feel, it's as if people don't want to (or cannot) accept it. regards Re: [ ] Re: fatigue Hey all - I am up too at 2:51 a.m. (and I thought it was just because I was always a night person.) Guest guest
Having a friend who is suffering from this disease, I am also amazed at Dr’s who have no clue what fatigue can do to a person. To tell a patient to try going back to work is insane. I suffered from cancer many years ago and remember the fatigue I suffered then. Trying to make a decision on anything caused me such distress. It was like trying to think when your brain cells were in different rooms of a house. It took me so long to get from one room to another to create a thought. What causes me concern as well is where your champion is? It seems so many diseases have celebrities that can help bring a health issue to the forefront. Is there someone who is doing this for you? It is so hard to watch someone you care about go through this disease and it seems so many people just don’t understand what it does to a person. I would willingly write letters etc to help you all. Guest guest
Dealing with the daily fatigue has to be the most frustrating aspect of AIH, at least for me. I get out of bed in the morning, usually more tired than I was when I got in. I drag myself to work (well, at least most days) and can't wait until lunchtime when I take a two hour lunch, come home, and nap. I try explaining it to my husband who simply does not understand how difficult it can be. I've even taken him to doctor appts just to hear the words from my dr. I guess he gets frustrated because he says I'm a hypochondriac or I use it as an excuse to not do something that he wants to do. Lately, he's even taken to saying that he's still young and can't live the rest of his life this way and maybe it's just time for him to move on (I'm 35, he's 36). Anyway, enough of sad me. Something that does help with the sleep somewhat is Trazadone. I use 50 mg each evening--at 150 mg dosage, it is considered an antidepressant --hmmm, there's a thought ;-) Anyway, it does help me with uninterrupted - if light -- sleep and I think it does help keep me on an even keel and able to deal with a grumpy hubby and 4-year old daughter. At least I'm not quite so " snappish. " Best of luck, Beki - AIH 1995 > hello everyone, > I know i am not the only one with a problem with fatigue and not being able > to sleep.I am having a hard time getting through to other people that the > fatigue is something I deal with everyday.they can't seem to understand why i > cannot just go to bed and sleep for 8 hours and get up ready to go and tackle > the day.It just doesnt work that way,and i am getting a little tired and > pissed of trying to make someone understand who just wont accept the facts.so > i thought i might print some responses from people with that problem and it > might help if they realize im not the only one.anyway i dont know what else > to do,it is really frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please help. > oh by the way my sleep intervals are about 2 hrs of sleep then up until > whenever then another 2 hrs. and so on and different day to day. >

Then it is hard to get up in the morning to do anything. I take alot of Vitamins, directics, and lactulose. I get very weak in the afternoon and very tired. My legs bother me at night and I sometimes itch for no apparent reason. I have also noticed since I was diagnosed with cirhosis, that my eyes get very tired, red and dry. I wear contacts. I can't sit too long or bend down lately, because my back and legs and feet hurt. My doctor had said I have little muscle in the palms of my hands and feet.. I need to work, which I haven't since diagnosed, but don't know if I can make it thru even 5 hrs. a day. It really is very frustrating, I can't do alot of things I used to, especially anything like exercise. Anyone with similar effects?

Some people have recommended a particular eyedrop that their doctors recommended -- right now I can't think of the name. Perhaps someone will send a message identifying it. The gel form is said to be good to use at night. Do you have to wear contacts? For itching, try Atarax (by prescription.) It will also make you sleepy until you get used to it. I can't remember the name of a lotion people have recommended for topical relief. Have you looked into disability claims? SSI or perhaps SSDI? Or perhaps you have some private insurance through your employer? Good luck. I hope other people can fill in the blanks where I don't have information to pass on. Guest guest
Shireen, I have been diagnosed with COPD. I do get very tired and when walking I feel dizzy. I now sleep with a cpap machine and oxygen. And Trazodone at 150 mgs. I have hypoxia so I can never take a deep breath and the base of my lungs are very damaged. I think I have 40% lung function left so yes I am sleepy. I spent the whole day yesterday sleeping. So if you want to blame the fatigue on COPD you can but I also believe your liver has much to do with fatigue as well check with your doctor. Are you on oxygen? gayle trans/6-99 ^oo^ galye@... I can't really take any pain medication as my liver can't handle it so I have to make do with a TENS machine but it only works so much and you can imagine how long I need to use it for when I use it on all my joints! Its gotten so bad my parents have had to put banisters in and a bathrail and bathchair in the bathroom. I'm like a crippled old woman and I'm only 18! You're right though, its terribly frustrating. AIH is just not fun at all and my doctor said I was " lucky " that it was AIH! Ha! Take care.
