Guest guest
I thought Id address this separately. In a civilized society there are? needs for control. Humans havent yet evolved into perfect beings. People cannot always be given the right to be dumb. Should we allow drunks with 3 DUI's back behind the wheel to maybe kill our kids?? Do THEY have the right to be dumb??? Do we allow gun owners to have them lying around with young kids without trigger locks?? And do we then allow them to have our kids over to play without telling us, and endanger our kids?? Do THEY have the right to be dumb?? There has to be a balance between over regulation and no regulation. Im not very good at history but I recall a few civilizations downfalls due to anarchy and lack of rule. anytime you have large numbers of animals, in social context, there has to be rules. we humans are included in this. even the almost solitary animals have " rules " to keep order. and in groups,The ones who refuse or 'dont wanna' listen or abide by them are either removed (in often heartless ways) or thrown out of the group. The right to be dumb has to have its limits. and I think when people are vulnerable ( as in when desperately ill; when having less information or less education etc) then rules [including rules that protect the good of the group as well as the individual ]must be abided by. you say " grow up and be responsible for oruselves " -well, as we (hopefully)teach our kids, part of being grown up is following society's rules. Dont like them or think theyre out dated?? work to change them. And being part of a society means we all dont get the " right to be dumb " especially if and when others' safety or rights or health is affected. in some ways we are our brother's keepers. or should be My community is being DUMB by using 2 very toxic chemicals NOT meant to be mixed together to eradicate every last dandelion. Theyve been told by fellow neighbors who are chemists and Drs etc. how dangerous this is to our health.I personally have already been harmed. and their response?? now they refuse to tell us when they spray and with what so we cant complain the board says " well the landscaper says its not that toxic and its cheaper becasue he uses it in bulk--on golf courses " --well those courses are SHUT for 48 hrs per manufactruer while WE breathe it in all day/week..and we have given them volumes of proof to contrary of the claims of being safe. We have had to undergo huge amts of time and legal expense to get our rights upheld ( NJ like most states has right to know and pesticide laws saying we must be notified and also we can waive our own properties etc) meanwhile we are still battling over this and btw without those regulations and laws we would NOT be able to get relief!! do those 4 Board memebrs have the right to be DUMB at OUR expense??? and as far as my postings disclosing inadequacies of so called health advisors, to quote Margaret Fuller " If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it " and I am a BIG fan of Hillel " He who refuses to learn deserves extinction " ( note it doesnt say " cant " learn but " refuses " to even if its too hard or inconvenient or too costly!!!) and mainly my motto in life (Hillel again): " If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? And if not now, when? " which I interpret as I must stick up for myself? as well as sticking up for others -especially those unable in whatever ways to stick up for themselves- and to do so " now " be well Finette
