Folic acid may ease asthma symptoms

Researchers from s Hopkins Children’s Center report a link between blood levels of folate and symptoms of asthma.“Our findings are a clear indication that folic acid may indeed help regulate immune response to allergens, and may reduce allergy an asthma symptoms,†said leading researcher Matsui.

According to the findings of the study, higher folate levels were associated with fewer reported allergies, less wheezing, lower likelihood of asthma and lower levels of IgE antibodies (the predominant antibody associated with an allergic response).

Specifically, the lowest average folate levels were associated with a 40 per cent increase in the risk of wheezing, compared to the highest folate levels. In addition, people with the lowest folate levels had a 31 per cent higher risk of allergic symptoms, and a 16 per cent higher risk of having asthma, compared to those with the highest folate levels.

The area of study is ongoing, confirmed the researchers, with the plan to conduct a placebo-controlled trial of folic acid vs. placebo in people with allergies and asthma. The National Institutes of Health funded the research. In the meantime – if you or your child suffers from asthma - why wait for the results of another study? Folic acid is readily available in all green leafy vegetables, garbanzo beans, asparagus and lentils.

You’ll find this B vitamin in all good quality multiples – and sold separately in 400 mcg and 800 mcg strengths.
