Gill, I am one of the ones who has gained weight and loads of it, I

was 9 st most of my life and suddenly went up to 15st, the highest

I've been was 15.9. If you look in the photo section you will see the

before and after. I was just worried about the people who do just take

the meds for losing weight.

Hi Dee, sorry you are one of the unlucky ones then - its really awful to gain so much weight and for no reason that you are in control of isnt it. This is one of the issues that people are very sensitive about and probably why you got such a respone. Really, people that come here are at the end of their tether and not getting real help on the NHS - that's why we are sensitive to posts like yours appeared to be - as its the sort of thing that GPs tell us and they have no idea! Sorry to hear you also have gained so much weight - crap isnt it?!! I really thnk that people who 'end up here' are not just trying to lose weight, but I understand your concern.

This is exactly me Gill, my sister has done nutrition (she was a nurse until retirement) and she has told me so often that I don't eat enough but that is something that I got into the habit of when I started to gain weight and to be told that I would be referred to a dietician and then offered diet pills by the GP - it just makes it all so annoying.

I was always slim and could eat what I like and having gained weight through the hypothryoidism - I dont overeate, in fact some people have told me I need to eat more to boost my metabolism!

HI Dee

Honestly, I know of nobody here who just take Armour to lose weight. If they do, they certainly haven't sent any messages to say so, and if they had, I would quickly enlighten them. I have seen this happening on some American forums, and when doctors write a prescription in the UK for Armour, they have to write "For the treatment of hypothyroidism" because yes, there are people like bodybuilders who use any product with T3 in it, and some use also T2. This is very dangerous.

No matter how much I diet I go down 2lb and up 3lb the minute I even look at a slice of bread. I am on armour and have been since October 2005, this is so ridiculous and I know that I am not the norm but I don't think that I am totally unusual either. Frustration is the least emotion that I feel about it. I used to be happy to walk into a room, now I find it so very difficult and have done for 8 years and come over a totally different person, I don't even know who I am any more so how can anyone else LOL.

nne

nne, its so frustrating isnt it, Ive tried to diet but it doesnt work anyway so Ive given up for the time being and hopefully when my medication is sorted, with some T3 I hope, then maybe I will lose the weight. What's even more annoying is that the fat goes on my stomach so I look pregnant!! I used to feel good about myself but now I feel like a fat lump!!

I was taking T3 at the time, prescribed by a private doctor because I was not converting. My doctor was one of those who believed thyroxine alone is sufficient.

One day as I walked into his surgery he said to me "you really must lose some weight". I told him that I could not however much I tried. He then went on to look at my blood test results, the TSH being supressed. "You are taking too much T3" he said, then went on to say that a lot of people take it to lose weight. I replied "well I cannot be taking too much then can I"?

its horrid isnt it - and the worst kind of obesity - apple shapes are more at risk apparently! I wonder if this is related to insulin resistance - any experts on this out there?

Over recent months I am going from my usual hourglass pear-shape

proportions to barrel-shaped with a definite pregnant belly. In the

last week alone 5 people have enquired if I'm expecting a happy

event - arghhhh! But it ain't normal, is it?

My aunt has been so alarmed by my sudden shape change she is urging

me to see the GP to rule out a tumour.

there has been some recent papers that suggest that T4 also can cause weight gain - I havent lost any since being on it and have gained weight!

I do think this is something to do with insulin resistance as fat on the abdomen is apparently a sign of this, but I dont really understand it so I keep meaning to look into it more when I have time!

So there are a few of us then Lilian who don't find that taking armour suddenly helps for the weight to shift. I know that you also have the diabetis though and would assume that hinders you somewhat.

Hi

I have not lost an ounce since starting Armour and have just been

diagnosed with diabetes. Does the diabetes make loosing weight even

harder? I eat a very healthy diet and exercise but the weight just

doesn't shift.I see my GP this coming week about the diabetes

treatment and am hoping that it will help with the weight. It does get

very depressing when you seem to take one step forward and two steps

back all the time.

Well, I used to worry that I was too thin - under 7 stones at one point at 5 foot 6, now I am 11.5 stones & very slowly on the up (2 to 3LB/year). I do not pig out (well only occasionally) and do not even like most cakes/biscuits, only eat bread occasionally. Every year I think will be the one where I lose a stone or so...

Nowadays people are notoriously impatient. We don't want to wait for anything.

Our country is home to fast food and drive-through banking. So, when it comes to

our private lives and eating habits, it's no wonder that our general inclination

is to indulge ourselves. Why wait if you don't have to? Gratification,

preferably immediate, becomes the order of the day. The problem, of course, is

that a pattern of instant gratification has its downside. The downside is that

instant gratification may not be in your best interest. An inability to stop

acting like you must have it, and have it now, is one reason you might veer from

your goals. A repeated pattern of instant gratification can be a hidden barrier

to reaching your goals. The central strategy is to help you change your " I must

have it now " mind-set and learn to practice patience. A hard fact of life is

that you can't meet your goals and simultaneously indulge every craving and

desire when you want it. If this paragraph makes you move a little in your seat,

feel uncomfortable, or whisper to yourself, " Hey, are they talking about me? "

then please continue reading.

What Is Practicing Patience?

Practicing patience is the means by which you will learn to pinpoint those

moments when you think you must have what you want and transform them into

opportunities to act in your long-term interest. Practicing patience boils down

to small acts that add up to big results over time. It means deciding to act in

your own interest no matter what it takes. Does it mean never being able to

satisfy your cravings? Absolutely not! It means satisfying your cravings in ways

that won't be hurtful to you. Practicing patience is important because it will

help you act on your true needs. The great part is that when you learn to

practice patience, you'll become less interested in participating in actions

that don't lead toward your goals. For example, you will pass up a dessert with

the feeling that you really don9t want it or you'll find being sedentary is

increasingly unsatisfying. Can you imagine that? It's true. When you understand

that there are no quick fixes and you begin to practice patience, you exert

control over your life, and that will ultimately bring you satisfaction and

success.

How Are You Doing Now?

If you don't know immediately whether instant gratification is a reason you veer

from your goals, read the statements below and check off the ones that describe

you best.

When I want something, I generally allow myself to have it.

- I won't wait long for something I want.

- If I want something done, I want it done now.

- I indulge myself in unhealthy habits without thinking.

- Waiting is torture.

- I interrupt myself when I notice I'm about to go against my game plan.

- I can wait to get what I want.

- I have met a larger goal by taking small steps.

- A slow and steady pace fits my lifestyle.

- I generally weigh my actions against my overall interests.

If the last five statements seem to describe you best, then the need to

immediately satisfy your desires may not be one of the primary reasons you veer

off track from your goals. However, if the first five statements describe you

better than the last five, then learning to practice patience may help you

attain your goals.

How do you increase your patience? That is a great question to ask, but it has

so many different answers. Everyone has a complete and total different

personality, so one thing may work great for some and not for others. Patience

is a very touchy subject. Believe me, coming from someone who does not have much

of it seems to make things a lot harder then what they need to be. So, what were

going to do is both you and I are going to learn how to increase our patience

together.

Whenever you feel like you are at a point that you can not take much more the

best thing to do is to sit back and breathe. Taking deep breaths in and out have

been known to help with many different problems. Such problems would be

patience, anger etc. The best thing to do is breathe in through your mouth

really deep and exhale through your mouth as well. If you seem to have a problem

with doing this, try using a paper bag to breathe into.

Another way to increase your patience is to put yourself around other people who

may have your same problem. Do not mention much of how you are trying to improve

your patience factor. Instead, watch them when they become impatient. Many

people do not realize the things they do until they see someone else do them. If

you find what your friend is doing to be stupid. Just think how people see you.

Evaluate your stress level. Impatience can grow depending on the amount of

stress you encounter on a daily basis. Trying certain activities to relieve

stress may in fact help you to relive your feeling of impatience as well.

Different meditation exercises such as yoga or simply sitting in a place and

thinking about what's really on your mind and how you can fix it can help you to

develop more patience.

Western society is loath to embrace that peaceful thoughts create a more

enriched life. Western society is highly ensconced in corporal punishment and

'An eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth,' mind-set. When someone says they

meditate to create peace of mind, one is jokingly, chided for being a peacenik,

or foolhardy and naïve.

In the face of these negative reactions, your peace of mind or lack thereof is

your doing. Understanding that it is not what others do, but how you respond to

them, is the key to learning greater patience and acceptance of others.

Impatience has less to do with what is going on around you and more to do with

your inner perceptions of what you experienced.

When you manage your mind through meditation or repeating affirmations, you will

notice that your thoughts take on a neutral stance versus a judgmental view.

Furthermore, you will feel better about yourself and others when you are able to

manage your feelings, thus, avoiding uncomfortable or irritating reactions to

situations. Consciously slowing your mind will give you the peace of mind to

evaluate each situation on its merits.

Learn to slow your racing mind and relinquish your desire for control will help

you see that there is little in life that is so urgent for you to sacrifice your

peace of mind and sense of tranquility. When you notice yourself feeling edgy,

become attuned to the rhythm of your breath, which can give your mind a point of

focus. Repeat your affirmations such as " Relax into the moment, " " Slow down, " to

make it easier for you to transform your annoyance about what others are doing

and more easily concentrate on yourself and your reactions.

Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart

and try to love the questions themselves ...

Don't search for the answers,

which could not be given to you now,

because you would not be able to live them.

And the point is, to live everything.

Live the questions now.

Perhaps then, someday far in the future,

you will gradually, without even noticing it,

live your way into the answer.
