Guest guest
I Salute you today, my friend Fla. Boy Walks to D.C.for Homeless * By BETH PARKER/myfoxdcWASHINGTON, D.C. - His sneakers are size 6 and a half, but his heart is much bigger."You don't have to be all grown up. No matter how old or how young you are, you can make a difference. There's all kinds of things you can do," said Zach Bonner. What Bonner decided to do is walk 1,225 miles from Tampa, Florida to Washington, D.C. He calls the walk "My house to the White House."It honors people who have no house at all. Zach says the thought of homeless children inspired him to keep walking on long hot days."When homeless children get tired of being homeless, they don't get to quit being homeless, so why should I get to quit walking when I get tired of walking," said Bonner.Zach and his mom made it to D.C. with enough energy left over to climb the Capitol steps. His organization is called the Little Red Wagon Foundation. He brought a wagon full of kids' letters to the President.Zach told the crowd that fighting homelessness is a little like when his Mom tells him to clean his room. The problem seems overwhelming."But I have found that if I just start and take one small section at a time and continue-- keep going. I look up and before long my room is clean. That is what we have to continue to do with this crisis. We can't just continue to shut the door and hope it goes away," said Zach.In an effort to truly walk the walk, Zach spent the night at the Sasha Bruce emergency shelter for kids in Northeast D.C. Corey Brown was just three years older than Zach is now when a death in the family left him homeless. Now, Corey's headed to college at UDC. He'd like to become a politician."There was a lot of times in my life when I just feel like I should give up," said Brown. "But people in my life keep pushing me through. All my case managers at Sasha Bruce-- they kept telling me I was better than that. They kept building me up so I could go forward in life."Zach's moving forward, too. Next summer he will walk from Tampa to Los Angeles. Remember he's only 11, so his journey is just beginning.Zach is still hoping to deliver the letters to President Obama before he leaves Washington. He doesn't have a meeting with the President yet, but he's working on it.
