Guest guest
Hi Mom of 3 boys, I have two CIs. I had both ears done at the same time on Dec. 9, 2002 but was not hooked up until Jan. 9, 2003. It was not really a silent Christmas for me because I could still " hear " with my eyes and vibrations like I'd been doing since 2001 when I lost the last bit of usable hearing I had left. How's it going for me? Fantastic! These CIs have passed my expectations and I'm still improving. With bilaterals I know where sound is coming from. I feel safer. Sounds are fuller and I don't have to turn one CI up as loud with two as I do with just one. Music is fuller with two. I hear better in noise with two. I hated one-sided hearing with a HA in high school so even before I knew if a CI would work I knew I wanted both ears done. It's worth it. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. Guest guest
Candace, I am a bilateral user, receiving the firt CI in 2000 and the second in 2005. Both times I was sick for about a week, but bounced back and now am enjoying surround sound. With the first CI, it took me a while to understand speech and now my sentence discrimination is 71%. With the second CI (Freedom), I understand speech within a few seconds and have 93% sentence discrimination.
Guest guest
I was in the test trials for bilaterals, if the insurance paid for the first one then the other was paid for by Cochlear. I remember my doctor asking me if I had a weak stomach. I told him every time I had a migraine I'd throw up. He gave me meds for my stomach before I had the surgery. I had the 6 hour bilateral surgery in the morning and went home that night. Before I left he gave me another shot with meds for pain and for my stomach because it was 90 miles home. I never got sick. Guess I'm one of the lucky one. There's a group callled BICIers@... . If you send an email I'm sure you will hear from others. Snoopy? Good luck with your son going bilateral and keep us posted. Sorry he had such a hard time the first time. Glad you don't regret it because hearing is priceless. Sharon Myers Bilateral CI user *********************** From: Jcandt 82500 <jcandt82500@...> That is wonderful news! Did insurance pay for two Ci's? Bilateral implants has just been coming up here where I live. There aren't many people around here with two. I have been researching as much as possible on it. So if u have any information as far as knowledge, websites, groups, links anything I would appreciate it. I would love to give my son hearing out of both ears. Hes doing sooo WONDERFUL with one, I couldn't imagine how he would do with 2. But putting him through another surgery also scares me. He has a weak stomach and with his first Ci his recovery wasn't the greatest. He was really pale, weak, couldn't eat anything or drink anything and keep it down. He was throwing up everything there for his medicine that they gave to him he couldn't keep down. And in his throw up was alot of blood so I was very nervous. We stayed in a hotel room that was inside the hospital which was great. Because I lived 2 hours and 30 minutes from the hospital that performed the ci. So luckily I was in there hotel and able to run him down to the ER. They had to keep him another night and put IV's in him. I hated seeing my baby like that and I was regreting ever doing the surgery. I kept telling myself that I should have waited and let this be his decision for when he got oder. And even after keeping him another night and we were on our way home he was still throwing up. And very weak. But he finally recovered and when he got turned on it was amazing. He kept itching though his whole face and head like he had an allegric reaction to hearing. It was strange and till this day he itches alot. But he loves it and I love it. He has came a long way with it. And no more REGRETS!!!!
