You need to add a lot more vegetables into what you're eating and replace some of your meat with them. Especially fatty meat like ham & roast beef. Try fish & chicken or turkey instead. Just as an example - this is my day today which is fairly typical. Breakfast - 2 eggs scrambled (no milk, no fat added), 1 cup oatmeal w/stevia, Lunch - 2 brown rice cakes, very light on butter; big garden salad (no dressing), 1 hardboiled egg Dinner will be 1 blade steak (the little steaks), sauteed zucchini & quinoa with a little butter. Guest guest
Ok... somethings to consider... a thyroid problem is not often detected with regular thyroid tests. Are you cold often... especially your hands and feet? What is your normal body temperature... is it 98.3 to 98.9 or is it lower...esepcially in the 97.something? Do you feel tired alot? Not being able to lose weight it a symptom of thyroid issues. If you say yes to any of these... do some online research on hypothyroidism. On Atkins.. I would suggest trying to up your carbs to 25 - 30... add more veggies in. Are you eating enough healthy fats? They are very important. Without knowing your fat intake your protein intake sounds like it could be out of balance. You want your daily menu to consist of 75% fats, 20% proteins and 5% carbs. Your meals should be balanced with fats/proteins/carbs... the fats help tremendously with satifying your appetite... 3 meals a day (and snacks) helps keep your metabolism up and running which equals burning calories. Your not eating too much... but your not eating enough of balanced snacks and meals. Eating too little will only slow your metabolism down putting your body into starvation mode. You will not lose weight as your body is holding on to everything it has for fear of famine. Getting the Candidiasis under control is important and can be linked to hypothyroidism. Check into it further and at least you will be able to rule it out if you find that is not the problem. Hope this helps! And yes... " stressin " doesn't help.... De-stress... relax... and take the time to figure this out. You are worth it! Guest guest
Lose the dairy and then try Atkins, use oil dressing, no cream or half and half. If you stick to this you will start losing weight. It worked for me. Also check out the Metabolic typing diet. by Dr. Wolcott. Atkin may not be right for you. Pretty simple. They have doseages from 30 mg up to the ProBiotic, which is 1,200 mg. They have some other stuff too. It might be a good place to start. And it's more affordable than the health food stores. As for the Diflucan, I'd been on it for a few years and it just covers up the symptoms. As soon as you go off it everything comes back. Most traditional doctors will prescribe it. Newer, alternative practitioners won't. The candida builds up an immunity to the Diflucan, Nizoral, Nystatin, etc. Chris

Guest guest
I was having alot of weight gain and it was the candida. You can't have coffee and ice cream if you're doing candida diet. Try eating veges and meat and sprouted grain bread, like Ezekeil bread. Health food store has this and some supremarkets, it's usually refrigerated or frozen section. This helped me to lose weight and stop eating sugar or processed foods. Eat raw foods " meaning unprocessed foods " Hang in there you lose and feel better. I swear by the Ezekiel bread, it helps elimination too!!! Kim
Guest guest
hello Kim, my name is Grace, and i have been following this group for some time, altough i dont post so much. like all here, i have same problem...doctors dont really know what im talking about, or have a very small idea of it. only lately i became aware that i deal with candida. didnt know so much about it, till i started searching the net, and found this group. all this years (10) i tought that i had something ' wrong'...i felt bad, and doctors couldnt really find a reason. i became afraid of saying something, it looked like there was allways 'something' going on with me. i didnt understand why other people felt great, and i didnt. trush, (that now comes and goes, is never good),skin problems,head/stomach pain, very strong, feeling very tired, and for last 2 years, very drepressed, with big 'mood swings'. (came together with pregnancy and dificult birth of my baby, was tought to be post-birth drepression) together with all this i have too much weight, that i dont manage to get rid of. i read so much already about treatments, diets.... and am so confused. maybe i can ask you some help? mostly about diet, and maybe some natural products? hope you dont mind me asking, but im just so ' lost' with so much information... thank you already for any help/info you can give me... all the best for you... Guest guest
Hi and welcome! The weight did just come off for me once I started on thyroid hormones, and my diet is pretty much the same. I started on Levoxyl in Feb. and lost about 30 pounds by mid-June I think. In mid-June, my doc added Cytomel to the Levoxyl. My weight stayed stable. Then in Dec. I started on Armour. My weight is still the same. I'm 132 pounds, 5'3 " . Everybody thinks I'm still losing weight, but I'm not. I am losing a lot of inches though, and my clothes sizes are going way down. I don't really need to lose anymore weight. Anyway, my mother got started on Synthroid several months ago, and she is actually gaining weight with no change in diet. she is hoping to switch to ARmour to see if that helps. I don't know why some people lose weight and others struggle a lot with it. Perhaps their medication needs adjusted. Or maybe they're having some conversion problems. Perhaps they need to make some dietary changes. Some people don't get enough energy (calories) and when this happens, it slows the metabolism even more, making weight loss impossible. Sometimes it might be an exercise issue. Or maybe there's another health issue going on which is making it difficult to lose weight. Are you taking Armour, and if so, are you taking enough? Do you have enough energy to exercise? I think exercise is so important, but I know before I was started on hormones, I couldn't exercise at all. It was all I could do just to continue working. If you can exercise 5 times a week for 15-30 min., that will help. I'm very, very active and have been for many years. I don't know what kind of diet is right for you or anyone else. I went to a nutritionist back in 1990, and I have worked with dieticians since. I just saw my dietician last week; it had been 8 years since I saw her. I just wanted to make sure the diet she recommended to me then was still good for me now. The only change I have made is I am looking at the glycemic index and glycemic load of foods, trying to eat mostly foods that are low GI and/or have low GL. I eat pretty much anything I want with the exception of refined sugar. I eat only a couple of servings of soy a week. I watch my intake of goitrogenic vegetables, eating them steamed or cooked. I eat what I feel is a balanced diet...using the pyramid. There are several pyramids you can use. I eat whole grains, beans, meat, fish, and lots of veggies & fruits. I also use olive oil for cooking, and about 3 times a week I indulge in the most truly wonderful butter. It costs $10 for a slab, but it's worth every single penny! That's my source of unsaturated fat, which I know is not good for me, but I figure since I don't inhale the stuff, a little bit occasionally is not too bad. I found out I'm allergic to all dairy products, eggs, rice, and seafood, so I avoid those. I use a powered egg substitute, but occasionally will indulge in a real egg or cheese. Anyway, all I know is that it's what's worked for me. I always refer everyone to a dietician or nutritionist because they enabled me to lose a lot of weight back in 1990 after I had tried everything else. Good luck and keep in touch! Tell me more about yourself. Guest guest
you might be undertreated. Do you feel good? People on Armour usually feel good with a TSH under 1. Guest guest
It could be that you are hormone resistant, and in that case, you may need to add some T3 to your regimen. It could also be that you simply do not respond to Armour... I didnt. My weight stabilized quickly after I switched to Synthroid. Others need Thyrolar, it just depends... Fortunately I have a doc who doesnt mind my switchin around! C.
Guest guest
hey well my story is that i went to my doctor and told him about alll my symptons and about what i believe it might be but of course he said he didnt think it had to do with my thyroid. also he said that the t3 and rt3 were unreliable test and that he wouldnt do them. this is my doctor at kaiser. when i got my results back my tsh was at 3.3 he said this was normal and would not give me any treatment. i also had been monitoring my temperature for 2 months and it ranged from the lowest at 93 and rarely the highest at 97. most of the time it was between 95 and 96.4. the craziest thing was that i would say " doctor do you really think this is normal? " and he actually told me it was not but he still would not do anything. he just said some people run lower then others, and he told me how he could eat whatever he wants and not gain weight while other people cant. i was just thinking about how much of a jerk he was being. well anyways i called a doctor i found out about that was in my city.. by the way i live in san francisco.. and he told me based on what i have told him he would treat me. i just couldnt afford to go to him right away so i had to wait a while since my insurance is still with kaiser. tomorrow i am going back to kaiser to do another test on my tsh, t3 and t4. he still would not do my rt3 even though ther other doctor said i should ask them too. so once i get back my results i will make an appointment with the other doctor since i have a little more money now. he seemed very informed and really understood me and what i was going through. well i just can't wait until i go to the doctor because i feel as if the all this weight will be lifted off my soldiers.and i really want to thank everyone cause you guys have been keepin me goin with something to look forward too for a long time while i have been waitin for this.. keep sending all the positive info and i want to hear more good things! ok thanks everyone goodbye.. >From: Kemal Kalajdzic <kemalandsheila@...> >Reply-hypothyroidism >hypothyroidism >Subject: Re: weight >Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 19:48:31 -0800 (PST) > >Hi and welcome! Guest guest
Ramsey, we hear bad things about Kaiser and thyroid treatment on these boards. 3.3 is too high a TSH. Poor doc is in over his head ie incompetent. Guest guest
yeah thanks alot im trying my best to get out of there. i found a doctor not too far from me on wilsonssyndrome.com and when i spoke to him on the phone he seemed eager to help and understood exactly what i was going through. im just waiting for my total t3, free t4, and tsh from kaiser. the doctor also told me to ask them for rt3 but my doctor wouldn't do it for me. it was obvious he didn't know what he was talking about because when i spoke to him at about 10 AM that day and told him i would like to add the rt3 test when i go for my next check, he said " sure no problem " . then about five hours later he called me telling me he won't add it anymore, that the test was unreliable, and that they have no range for it. he also was asking me why i wanted it as if i was doing something bad and treated me as he usually did as if i was a child whining to him. oh well im almost done with kaiser anyways im just using their laboratory to save some of the expenses of the outside doctor. ok i gotta go but once again thanks alot and please keep sending good news if possible. Because i have been on a diet for a year off andf on never to seem to loose just gain and then after i noticed so many other things staring to go wrong with me i finally went to the doc and they said i have hypothyroidism. i just need to get advice on it all. > > I think so http://www.smart-drugs.net > but you would be better off with Armour IMO. > Gracia > > > can you order t3 off the internet? > > > > > > Re: weight > > > > > > > It could be that you are hormone resistant, and in that case, you > > > may need to add some T3 to your regimen. Guest guest
weight is a big problem for most people with this disease. being on the right medication, right dosage, the diet that's optimal for you, exercise, supplements...so many things play a factor is your weight loss. once I started on thyroid hormones, I lost the weight i needed. I had been stuck at the same weight (150 pounds) for about 7 years I think. Then in Dec.2002/Jan. 2003 I picked up about 7 pounds. I started on thyroid hormones in Feb. or March 2003...just about a year ago. I went from about 157 to 132 from the time I started the hormones until around June 2003. I've been the same weight (give or take the usual 1 or 2 pound fluctuations) since last summer. take care, sheila angiesplacedaycare <angiesplacedaycare@...> wrote: you guys are talking weight how much weight. Guest guest
Chuck, what happens if you do to much exercise in one day? Bev Chuck B <cblatchl@...> wrote: Bev, You wrote: > Chuck, > Since your thyroid doesn't function at all w/o meds. How is your weight? ... It's a struggle, the typical story for this list. I lost about 40 pounds in six months doing the low carb thing. However, my system seems to have adjusted since then, and I found that nothing would prevent the weight from coming back except calorie restriction. In principle, the medication should fully replace the lost function. My TSH was at 2.5 several months ago. It might help if it were lower, but the doc does not want to push it, particularly since the T4 doses only come in increments of 12.5 mcg. Also, I don't seem to have any other symptoms now, unless I do too much exercise in one day. Chuck

The short version is that you temporarily run out of T3 and become hypoT. The rate at which you use T3 increases with exercise. Thus, you get the paradoxical effect that exercise actually DECREASES your metabolism instead of increasing it. I experience this as " the wall, " a sudden extreme fatigue, causing me to just sit and stare for an hour or two. If I limit the time and intensity of the exercise, I don't run into this. Folks on this list tell me that taking some form of T3 will help, but I am still just on straight T4, at least so far. Chuck

I've noticed this sort of pattern with me but didn't understand why it was happening... I'd get to a point of feeling pretty good and then be a lot more active doing things, and then I'd 'crash' or hit a wall and be wiped out for a couple of days, or even a week or two... a real roller-coaster in terms of energy. I've been trying really hard to figure out why this has been the case and how to modulate it.

One way is to take a little extra T4 on the days you know you will be active. However, that can be dangerous. Only take a tiny bit extra. Guest guest
You think taking T4 would be better than taking T3 in such a situation? I wonder because the T3 is more immediately available, and the T4 has to be converted? Re: Weight > , > > You wrote: > >> ...
