Guest guest
Thanks, ! Question for the group... I started taking 60 billion CFU's of Kirkman's Pro-Bio Gold probiotics at the end of last week, and have so far experienced no die-off. I find that odd, especially if this is indeed a candida issue. Also, at the end of last year a CDSA test I had done game back with NO good bacteria. Zero point zero. None. So, shouldn't I be experiencing some sort of die off? Or, do I increase the amount of the probiotics? Thanks, Tara > > > > > > Tara the answer is no-- gas and bloating is not reported as a response to > > > LDN itself. It's 99% sure to be candida. Guest guest
Hi Tara, You don't need more probiotics. What you need is a quality probiotic. They are not available at Costco, supermarkets or most drugstores. Dr. Nan Fuchs writes: Many probiotic supplements on the market are worthless. In fact, an independent laboratory recently tested leading brands and found that nearly a third of them flunked. Some products contained less than 1% of the amount of live bacteria claimed. What's worse, a quarter of the products contained only one-ten thousandth the amount claimed. How to Tell the Good From the Bad Now every probiotic supplement claims to have a high number of organisms. But here's the problem: These organisms are counted at the time of manufacture, not at the time they reach your grocer's shelf. By the time you buy them, they have often been exposed to light and heat, which kill off many of the beneficial bacteria. In fact, Consumer Reports tested 27 different probiotic products and found that more than one in four supplements contained less bacteria than the amount claimed at the time of manufacture. That's why some probiotic formulas require refrigeration. But even those brands don't always work as well as they should. That's because the organisms can be weakened or killed by the acids in your stomach. They never reach your intestinal tract where they do their job. In fact, the probiotics commonly used as starters for dairy products like yogurt cannot survive passage through the stomach. They never get to colonize in the intestinal tract, so they never get to have the beneficial effects! Enteric-coated capsels help probiotics pass through your stomach unharmed and are delivered to your intestines. The enteric-coated capsules showed a 100% survival rate compared to a mere 5% for uncoated capsules. Because of this unique process, these capsules require no refrigeration. And here are some other things you should know about this process: 1) It's entirely plant-based and free of any nasty solvents. 2) It's certified GMO-free. 3) It leaves the capsules odorless and taste-free. 4) It adheres to stringent U.S. Pharmacopoeia norms, as well as the most demanding countries like Japan and Germany. A Probiotic Formula shouild include a balanced blend of beneficial bacteria that are crucial to your health — especially as you age. They included: Lactobacillus acidophilus Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lactobacillus lactis Bifidobacterium longum Bifidobacterium breve Bifidobacterium bifidum A balanced blend is designed to work throughout your entire digestive system — from your small intestine through your colon. L. acidophilus colonizes in your small intestine, while B. bifidum is effective in the large intestine. J. Rowen, MD writes: If you're taking probiotics, consider apples to keep your microbe buddies happy. In addition to helping your digestive tract, apples are a great source of other incredible phytochemicals. They are a "Living Food" that store well. Just make sure you eat organic apples, as most apples are loaded with pesticides. If you can't find organic apples or don't want to eat apples every day, you can also take AppleBoost. It's a great way to get the benefits of apples without any of the pesticides. The pectin in apples help help the intestinal pH. By keeping your pH in balance, you create a healthy environment for the probiotics to live and do their job.
Guest guest
Hi there, Thanks for the info. The probiotics I'm taking are good quality, and they are not from Costco. Kirkman Labs makes high quality probiotics, enzymes and have formulas designed specifically for children with autism as well as for the SCD diet. There are much higher doses of probiotics - therapeutic doses - well in the hundreds of billions. Tara > > Hi Tara, >  > You don't need more probiotics. What you need is a quality probiotic. Guest guest
Hi All I think that there could be quite a lot of misinformation going on here so I thought I would add my two-pennies worth. There is a huge amount of information out there regarding probiotics and much of it is very conflicting. This in itself probably proves that no one really knows what is going on. It is stated that there are trillions of good bacteria in our gut with over a thousand different strains and that medical science has not yet identified all the different strains let alone work out what they do. Whilst there is a lot of conflicting information there does seem to be a general consensus that most if not all of the probiotics we take by mouth are rendered useless by the time they reach the colon and if they are not they are only transient, in other words they do not take up residence in the gut and so any benefit is only temporary. A number of leading doctors believe that the only way in which to properly repopulate the colon is by Human Probiotic Infusion aka Faecal Bacteriotherapy aka Faecal Transplantation and speaking as a laymen this does seem more logical although more inconvenient than by oral supplementation. Guest guest
Tara I have taken VSL#3 for 2 months. It certainly did not make me any worse but it also didn’t have a positive effect but that is not to say it will not help you. I believe that the secret of probiotics is to find one that provides the strain that you are missing and bearing in mind that there are over a thousand different strains this is not an easy feat. However, I believe that VSL#3 is a reasonable place to start. If you are concerned about its effects then a good idea is to start off with a third or half a packet and build up slowly from there. You don’t need an RX for it as you can buy it over the counter, at least you can in the UK. If you feel no benefit after a month then perhaps time to move on to another one. If you are in the UK then a new one called Symprove is showing promising results. I have just started on this one. I should also say that fairly recently a probiotic called rifaximin has shown excellent results for mild to moderate Chron’s. Good luck and let us know how you progress.
