So today I took 100 mg of niacin again, and this time I had a reaction. So I

ordered it in 50 mg. How long should I do the 50 mg twice a day before

increasing? How do you recommend you increase the vitamin c dose?

+++Hi . After you do not flush for 5 days at a particular dose, you can

increase in 25 mg (50 mg x 2 + 25 mg = 125 mg per day). Do not take more than

375 mg of niacin per day, since that gets into needing to increase all other

supplements, which we don't want to get into on this program. So you can take

50 mg niacin 2 times a day and not increase it.

+++Start with 500 mg 2 times a day, and increase it 500 mg per day every 3 days

until you are taking a total of 4,000 per day. If you get loose stools (called

bowel tolerance) at any time, take a little less for a few days, and take more

time to increase it.

The best, Bee

JMHO, but I think u are on to many abx's at once. I have never been on more than

two at one time. It can cause liver damage if on a lot.

Okay, so a good friend of mine gave me a lot of info on supplements to order,

but I also wanted to get some other input as well. so I am going to really get

fighting on this disease, I have late stage neuro lyme, am currently on doxy,

amoxicillin, leviquin and probiotics, oh, and magnesium. My LLMD is new to all

of this, so he doesn't know much about supplements, I want to do as much as I

can along with the antibiotics, so if you guys could give me as much info on all

of that, that would be wonderful!!!!

I am probably going to be ordering quercitin for allergies, grapefruit seed

extract and some kind of immune system builder. I have also heard something

about multimushrooms?

Thank you in advance!

I heard that when your taking ABX, you take multivitamins it will hinder th ABX

treatment....when i got treated with ABX, i hold my multivitamins to make it

effective. I was treated for 2 months of ABX and not taking now but in

Probiotics, multivitamins. I have B/L neuropathy in my hand from my Lyme. I

still get ringing of my ear and my sleep was better with Xanax, I also take

Benadryl 2 tabs at night, someone here said to use allergy treatment and I

follow that and it help me tremendously. My concentration is better when I get

enough sleep. I also exercise every 3 days, I rest for 4 days because they said

something about platelets recovery. I do a lot of walking, my joints are not

swollen anymore.

Bridget, if that was me, I would take that pain as a very serious warning sign.

I ignored a similar pain for a couple of weeks back in September, and ended up

in the ER with a gall bladder attack. And I think I got off easy -- the liver

damage from long-term abx can be serious and permanent, and you shouldn't mess

around with it.

IF IT WERE ME (your mileage may well vary), I'd stop the abx entirely, starting

right now. A few days' break is not going to hurt. And I'd schedule a talk with

my doc ASAP, to let him know I was in trouble, and was also off my meds. During

the time off, I'd push the milk thistle, dandelion tea, and any other liver

detox I could get my hands on (the web is full of suggestions), and double down

on the probiotics at the same time.

Once the pain was gone for 2-3 days, and my liver enzymes looked OK, I'd ease

slowly back onto the abx.

Also: If my LLMD was putting people on long-term abx without a full

understanding of the possible repercussions and how to avoid them, I would find

that worrisome.

I found the opposite with antibiotics - When I was off antibiotics, my liver

enzymes were up, because the infections themselves hurt the liver. My

enzymes keep coming *down *on antibiotics.

My LLMDs have me check my liver enzymes and CBC (complete metabolic panel)

every month while I'm on antibiotics.

Different antibiotics will have different effects on the liver, depending on

how you respond to them and what else you are taking them with. It's not

necessarily true that more antibiotics=worse for the liver. It depends on

which ones. Rifampin alone might be worse for some people's livers than

three antibiotics that are ok for the liver.

Also, don't be so sure that all herbs are good for the liver. The typical

Lyme herbs seem to be, but some are not, so check into that too.

That *liver pain in the right side *- I got that from either undertreated

Bartonella or* Bartonella herxing. *I am in the Bartonella group (

bartonella/) and many of us have

experienced that right-side pain while herxing from Bartonella. Since you're

on Levaquin, I would suspect you are having Bartonella herxing, since

Levaquin is great for Bartonella.

Do you know why your doctor has you on those particular antibiotics?

Best,

Bridget,

I actually just posted about this subject a few days ago. My weekly labwork came

back with a low white blood cell count and liver enzymes were abnormal somehow.

I definitely believe that this is a result of all of the pills I have been

taking. I was taking about 30 pills per day for around 6 months (give or take).

Now that I have cut down to IV Levaquin and Mepron only, I come up with liver

damage. You should definitely be detoxing, but also insist that you have a

standing lab order for bloodwork to test your liver function. I went out and

bought Milk Thistle along with a good probiotic and I am taking 20 King Chorella

per day. Hope that helps.

Bridget,

At a minimum, you should consider Milk Thistle and Alpha Lipoic Acid for liver

protection. Also you MUST take mega probiotics if you are on all those abx. My

LLMD recommends Theralac (expensive - but wow!) and Saccramyces boulardii to

prevent c. diff, a horrible GI infection that can result from abx use. Also,

just wondering... if your LLMD doesn't know much about this, well, are they

really an LLMD?

Make sure you check with your MD before taking herbs because some are hard on

the liver. Some MDs are not comfortable with alternative treatments such as

herbs. My LLMD is, but wants to know which ones are recommended to make sure

they don't stress the liver & kidneys while on abxs. On the other hand, I

talked to a Naturopath who has 20 years of experience with Lyme patients who was

adamant that antibiotics do more harm than good--that didn't go over well with

me since I'm going the antibiotic route at least for a year or so. I've

definitely improved on massive doses of abxs in different combos: Amoxicillin,

Zithromax (didn't work for me) and now oral ceftin & biaxin which seems to be

working well, for now. Following strict guidelines for diet & exercise (and

rest) are essential.

Bridget,

That's probably OK that he is not completely LL, having an open mind is the most

important thing for our MDs since no one really knows this disease yet.

However, you will need to pick up the slack and do the research yourself. I can

tell you already are doing that. I'm going to private email you my supplement

list - not that I'm recommending anything on it for you because our situations

could be very different but if you have questions about anything on the list

feel free to ask me, maybe I can save you time trying to figure stuff out.

I'm taking about 20 supplements, including Ohhira's probiotics, per my LLMD.

Ohhira's also makes a 'professional' version that's been fermented longer.

Here's a code COT477 to save $5 at iherb.

You really want to make sure you are taking quality supplements - many are

synthetic, or partially synthetic and these can cause more problems than good.

Also, it really depends on your symptoms as to which supplements would be best

for you to be on...lyme affects so many different organs/systems...heart, brain,

liver, etc. so, depending on where it has hit you hardest is where you want to

concentrate your supplements. My daughter had great help from heart and liver

supplements - most probably need liver supplements to help detox. Also,

sarasparilla has helped her head. A quality fish oil is absolutely needed for

everyone (and did any of you know there are actually 8 fish oils...I thought

there was only 3!). You should also be taking a quality muti-vitamin, with lots

of B and C....this is just a scratch on the surface. A good homeopathic Dr. can

help you figure out what your body is needing. Also, I have recently found a

new brand of supplements that is the best quality I have seen - if anyone is

interested you can contact me privately and I will give you info.

Amen about the quality. It's just as well the FDA isn't involved in that market;

but without any kind of regulation, the quality control is all over the map.

It's a scandal (no, really, serious exposes have been done) over just how much

some vitamin companies fudge their compounds so they contain just a fraction of

what's described on the label.

ConsumerLabs.org is one very credible place to compare brands and see if you're

really getting what you're paying for. Failing that, I'll tend to go with highly

reputable and trusted brands that market to doctors (Allergy Research, Source

Naturals, etc.), figuring that they're earning that good reputation with a tough

crowd.

I also buy my stuff, wherever possible, from one source: The Vitamin Shoppe,

which does such an incredible job of vetting and testing every product it sells

that ConsumerLab.org has named it the best supplement source in America three

years running. I figure that if I get it there, I'm not likely to go far wrong.

They're watching out for me.

I would be careful with vitamin shoppe brand of things...I have not looked into

their vitamins, but I did look at some of their body care products (lotions,

shampoos, etc.) and they had some very bad ingredients in them....parabens,

sodium lauryl sulfate, etc. It is really difficult to know quality. I just

learned that many companies claim they do not use synthetics, however some of

their ingredients come from motor oil, which I guess is not synthetic, but not

something I would want in my vitamins!

I go to Vitamin Shoppe once in a while because it's down the street, but I

ALWAYS find better prices at iherb (even when I have pay for shipping). The

trick is being patient enough to wait for the delivery.

Look at a bottle of Vitamin Shoppe cold-pressed organic flax oil. The label says

" Contains Soy " . Why would cold-pressed organic flax oil contain soy? No one

could say - not the VS manager, not their customer service, not their

headquarters, no one.

I assume it means 'manufactured on equipment that processes soy'. But that isn't

what the label says. And the majority of soy in this country is GMO - it isn't

organic. [All other manufacturers of flax oil manage to keep their products free

of soy/peanut alerts.]

So, Vitamin Shoppe flax oil is not pure, let alone organic.

+++Hi Jeanne. Do not take any kind of time-released supplements.

You do not need to be concerned about the source of ascorbic acid since it is

produced by chemically changing the source.

You should be taking 3,000 mg vitamin C in tablet or capsule form so you are

getting bioflavoids and other vitamin C co-factor nutrients, and the take 1,000

mg of ascorbic acid crystals (if you wish). I think it is easier to take all

tablets or capsules instead. You could have ascorbic acid on hand for other

treatments like for the sinuses.

+++Hi Jeanne. Timed-released supplements and medications contain special

coatings that contain questionable substances, and some coatings are known to

interfere with fat absorption. Most of them are patented so they do not have to

disclose proprietary (secret to their patent) information.

Stick to the tried and true supplements.

Most tea is diuretic, meaning it gets rid of water in the body, along with

minerals, so if you don't drink too much it is okay - say 2 cups per day.

the diet

+++Hi Prudence,

Everyone has intolerances to fruit, since fructose is one of the worst sugars

for the body. Of course you don't have any fruits on this program, except for

some people who are okay taking small amounts of lemon or lime which are lowest

in fructose.

What happened when you took calcium citrate? Also did you take it with

magnesium citrate, since they must be taken together in equal amounts or you

will get many symptoms that are very unpleasant.

bloating. But it's not the only supplement I have trouble with. About the only

thing I can tolerate is chewable things. But I am very sensitive to medications

including supplements. I get a bad taste in my mouth like I a m being poisoned

and feel tired.

+++Hi Prudence,

The symptoms you get in reaction to supplements are healing and detoxifying

symptoms, so that's not a bad thing.

The supplements provide nutrients your body needs to heal itself, so of course

they can all cause such reactions and symptoms.
