Subject: Help for Haiti Hi Everyone, Below is a letter I received from my friend, Siuan, and I wanted to send it on to all of you. Many times we want to help but don't know where to start and so we end up doing nothing. You can skip the letter part and get right to the address where you can send a care package. She has included a list of things in which they are in need of as well as the bank info where you can wire money if that suits you better. Her stepfather, who was in the quake and sustained some broken bones, owns a pharmacy in town but has also opened his home providing a 70 bed hospital. Again, thanks for whatever you can do and feel free to send to anyone you think could provide additional help in this most tragic situation. As a little preface (which some of you may already know) I came to the US by way of Haiti. I got my greencard there and spent time there as a teenager. My stepfather had a Haitian Art Gallery in Santa and in 1983 set up The Haitian Childrens Fund, a 501©3 California registered charity to help orphans in Haiti. My stepfather has been living in Haiti for about 15 years now and as you can imagine I was devastated when I heard about the earthquake. I didn't hear word from him for 4 days and feared the worst. Luckily, he is alive (a few broken bones) and is doing what he can to help others. He has a pharmacy in Petionville and it is the only one standing since the quake. He has turned his home (which was recently built and is one of few structures still standing) into a 70 bed hospital. I know there are many wonderful organizations to donate to and I am hoping that we can all reach out and assist in every way we can. I received an email and wishlist from my stepfather (things that they are desperately in need of to help others. ) Many of the things on the wishlist are standard things that many of us probably have lying around our house or could easily pick up an extra one of on our next trip to the store. So, what I have decided to do with my kids (and I decided I would also ask everyone I know to also consider doing) is assemble a care-package with some items from the wishlist and sent it to the Haitian Children's Fund office in FL. There is a ship waiting to take supplies to Haiti. Your package can contain as many or as few of the items listed as you can gather. Everything helps! They are in a very desperate state. There are larger things on the list too and if you have those things to donate, I can put you in touch with someone who can handle logistics. But if you want to send off a box, there are so many things that are easy to mail and they could really use. I am enlisting my kids in this process, from getting the box, filling it with things and taking it to the post-office. Of course, monetary donations help too, but everything helps, so here is the address/info, if you would also like to send a box: Boxes and/or checks can be sent to: HAITIAN CHILDRENS FUND 16 MARINA POINT PLACE PALM COAST, FLORIDA 32137 wire transfer of direct deposit info: HAITI PROJET WACHOVIA BANK FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA ROUTING NUMBER - 067013564 ACCOUNT NUMBER - 14-252-209 Here is the wishlist: (feel free to forward this to anyone else you might think would be interested) Anti inflammatory medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc..) OTC items like Neosporin, Vicks, Acetophenomin, cough medicine …..etc Baby Formula powdered milk supplies Water-purification materials MEDICAL SUPPLIES – Bandages, band-aids, splints EXTERNAL FIXATORS – HOFFMAN – a must ORTHOPEDIC DEVICES – splints, arm slings, back support, stirrup ankle braces, such as 3M FUTURO line and FLA ORTHOPEDIC, in Miramar. WATER PURIFICATION UNITS Reverse osmosis, thousands of gallons per day. CLOROX WATER PURIFICATION PILLS 5 GALLON BUCKETS - Standard method for transporting water CLOTHING – T-Shirts, flip-flops, sneakers. All too often Haiti gets donations of warm clothing that are suitable for winters. This takes up container space and is useless here. WATER – 5 gallon containers – container can be used after, bottled water. 1 gallon jugs useless. Many collapse in transit ruining other foodstuffs JUICE RICE BEANS CORNMEAL CEREALS – OATMEAL - CORNFLAKES CANNED MILK POWDERED MILK TOMATO PASTE COOKING OIL SUGAR COFFEE WHEAT FLOUR POTATO FLOUR SARDINES…ETC DRIED FISH MACARONI SPAGHETTI SALT Bath Soap SOAP – dishes, clothes... TOILET PAPER DIAPERS TOOTH PASTE TOOTH BRUSHES DEODORANT POTS/PANS METAL/PLASTIC CUPS/PLATES/SPOONS SMALL CAMP STOVES WITH PROPANE BOTTLES FLASHLIGHTS/BATTERIES COAL OIL LAMPS - COAL OIL Candles Matches PROPANE CHARCOAL cigarette lighters BLANKETS SLEEPING BAGS TENTS TARPS - People will make shelters from these. We will use them to cover supplies. ROPE/CORD MOBILE MEDICAL CLINICS GENERATORS/INVERTERS/BATTERIES HOSPITAL EQUIPMENT EVERYTHING… Some hospitals will be merging, leaving a lot of good stuff surplus. FARM STUFF There is a huge flood of peasants back into the countryside. We should do what we can to keep them there since this has always been an impossible goal. Seeds, tools, fertilizer and some way to transport produce to the market will rebuild Haiti’s farm community. Vegetable seeds – we need seeds that peasants can harvest new seeds from their crops. I am not sure if hybrid seeds allow this. Corn, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, onions, melons, peas, cucumber, peppers, (hot and sweet), radish, beans, okra, lettuce and more. Potato seed stock Fertilizer Tools Shovels, hoes, rakes, picks, pick-axes, sledge hammers. wheel barrows HAMMERS/SAWS/SCREW-DRIVERS/DRILLS SMALL TRACTORS WITH FARM ATTACHMENTS WATER-WELL DRILLING SYSTEMS SMALL CEMENT MIXERS WITH GAS ENGINES TRANSPORTATION WOULD BE USEFUL TO HAVE JEEPS/SUVS TO SUPPORT OPERATION SMALL TRAILER UNITS SMALL TRUCKS, LARGERS TRUCKS FOR MOVEMENT OF MATERIAL MOTORCYCLES/ ATVS For our staff project here we will need Beds/mattresses/pillows/sheets Towels Generator and batteries to run through our inverter. Bigger water tanks, pressure system and water heater (if we are wimps) Stoves Fridges Freezers Washer/Dryer Dishes/pots/pans/flatware Satellite Internet facilities Satellite TV facilities Internet phone facilities COMMUNICATIONS – Motorola hand units with master station would avoid existing communications problems. BLACKBERRIES Thanks everyone, Siuan
