My 6 yr old has been on LDN since mid December. She was *just* dx'd with Hashi's right before then. In fact it's all we have her on for the treatment, and we are going to get blood work in a few weeks to see if the antibodies have backed off.

LDN has improved her mood 100% She had no symptoms of thyroid disease except for Reactive Hypoglycemia, which we wrote off as a symptom as her Asperger's.LDN has given us eye contact. And my little girl is finally noticing things we've been driving by for 4 years. LDN has been the best biomedical intervention we have used on her. We will continue it even if it's not halting her antibodies (and then we will just add thyroid meds)

My TPO antibodies are gone after a year on LDN. However I also went gluten-free

and I'm not sure which one was responsible, or the combination. I did have them

tested about 3 months after starting LDN and before gluten-free, and they had

dropped considerably.

I continue to feel incrementally better all the time, but I made a ton of other

changes and improvements to my lifestyle, and it's really hard to pinpoint which

things have helped the most. I did not notice any huge change in how I felt

after starting LDN other than I almost never get sick now. Even if it has no

effect on my thyroid, this alone makes it worth it.

Please investigate the iodine protocol as an adjunct in your advances with

your child. Iodine is a required mineral for life, but it is demonized by

Western Medicine (the basis for that demonization has been completely and

thoroughly been showed to have been a lie, but med schools still teach the

lies).

I strongly believe that I'm an undiagnosed Asperger's. Since LDN and then

the iodine protocol (which I began for Hashi's and fibromyalgia), I have

had more control over my attention. I know you know how important that

is. Since I was not looking for this when I sought LDN and then found the

iodine protocol, the improvements I have experienced cannot be any sort of

result of wishful thinking.

I'm going to go ahead and cite a couple of sources to save time and

energy. I'm a moderator of the Iodine list:

That list and the files section contains multiple resources to help you.

Dr Brownstein is an iodine expert and the mentor of the owner of the iodine

list, who just became a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) in her own right:

I have the lugol's here and one day I will start it up LOL but my own issues with ADD mean I need to put it on the back burnerright now, till I get some of these loose ends tied up at home. I will likely start the lugol's once we get another blood test for her, to see if the antibodies went down with LDN alone.

It's not just Lugol's iodine. There is a short list of required companion

nutrients that are essential to success. That's why it's important to join

the discussion list and read the New Member doc, etc.

Well, that's my point... I don't have the time/energy right now to devote to learning a whole new protocol. I've spent the last year devoted to DAN and GFCFSF + low oxalate diet. It's been nuts. I have a lot backlogged and have to catch up before I dive into another scientific thing.

I would gladly " add some lugols to your drink " but since it comes with a whole book of things to do, I can't devote the time to it, esp when there are cautions against making the thyroid worse.I joined the list, it was over my head, I was on it long enough to see some people get their interesting conversations get booted over to the " off topic " list. It annoyed me because those particular conversations were the ones drawing me INTO the discussion. So I signed up for the OT list, and turned mail off on the regular list, because the only discussions that made any sense to me were the off topic ones.

The idea that you can damage the thyroid by taking iodine is a myth, a

falsehood. The list of companion nutrients is very short and

inexpensive. The word " protocol " in this case merely means the iodine +

short list of inexpensive nutrients. There are no elaborate rules about

diet, when to take the supplements, or anything else.

Sorry you had a bad experience, but you've come away with ideas about

iodine that aren't true, and that to me is the real sadness.

best wishes to you.

Well it was after really long posts and discussions back and forth about so and so's book said to do this, and then well that was his older book, his new book says this, and yadda yadda.I know it's important and I will get to it. I don't want you to think I am unappreciative of your advice. :-) It's just another thing I need to get to.

FWIW I have my own ADD/OCD issues (like my kids) nd have a hard time prioritizing! LOLOn Fri, Feb 18, 2011 at 1:57 PM, Baker <vbaker@...> wrote:

There is misinformation floating around here re Dr Brownstein who wrote the book "Iodine."

" Brownstein, M.D. is a Board-Certified family physician and is one of the foremost practitioners of holistic medicine. He is the Medical Director of the Center for Holistic Medicine in West Bloomfield, MI. " Copied from the reference provided. I have read his book several times as I wanted to believe iodine was an answer for me.

There are mixed opinions and theories regarding iodine and whether it is helpful or not for Hashimotos even among those who involved in alternative and integrative medicine. Some believe it can exacerbate autoimmune flairs. I tried it prior to getting on LDN 10 months ago and both antibody levels continued to rise and I felt no better. I took Iodoral for over a year and up to levels of 100 mgs per day. My antibody levels have continued to rise on LDN also. Currently I have had to reduce my thyroid meds as my tests showed I was hyper but did not feel like it. I will be retested for both antibodies again in 2 months. Hopefully, they will show thyroid improvement as my TPO has risen to >1300 in the last year, from 536 three years ago.

There does not seem to be one answer for all.

Iodine is reauired by everyone's body for thyroid function, all

reproductive organs, the skin, and it is required by the cells to fight

cancer. The controversy about iodine that exists within the alternative

health community is largely fueled by ongoing prejudice against iodine that

Western medicine continues to promulgate.

There are many factors involved in why someone may not respond ideally to

iodine, but it is not controversial that everyone needs iodine if you look

at the actual physiology and not medical myth.

However, this is way overtime off topic and we should get back to

LDN. And, even though I am dedicated to the proposition of the iodine

protocol and have experienced massive improvement, I still require my LDN

to be in optimal health. I wish this weren't my reality, but it is. I

accept that and am just happy to be able to have energy and be productive

in my life again. I'm so deeply grateful.

The controversy surrounding iodine and autoimmune thyroid disorders goes beyond

something fanned by the mainstream medical community. Dr. Datis Kharrazian, a

highly respected researcher, practitioner, teacher and author of the helpful

book " Why do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms When my Labs are Normal? " does not

recommend iodine for autoimmune thyroid disorders because it has been shown to

upregulate TPO activity, which you don't want in an autoimmune thyroid

condition. Janet Lang, another expert in the field does use it, but she says it

needs to be done carefully beginning in small doses.

For anyone tending to hyperthyroid conditions, iodine is not helpful and can be

harmful.

What's clear is that there are varied opinions on iodine and whether it helps or

hinders from respected voices in the field.

I am on LDN for my cancer not to come back. But I also have Hashimotos and an

Integrative MD that prescribes mega iodine and I am on that. I know the

controversy and am doing the best to do the right thing (not that anyone knows

what that is). I also have LYME Disease and am doing antibiotics (which is

noting I want to be doing) and am doing every supplement and herb known to

man/woman. more problems but to many to mention. It is also the chicken and the

egg. I have no idea which disease came first and which caused which one. I am a

gluten-free vegan because of food sensitivities and forgot to mention MCS for 25

years.

Just one day at a time.
