We tried Melatonin for Danny(7) and it did not work for him. It made him fall

asleep quickly then wake up about an hour later crying and very upset. It has

worked very well for our 2 older children (non DS) on occasion when they had

trouble falling asleep.

On another topic, does anyone still have the link to the Garth video? I

got a new computer and faster internet and would like to watch it (now that I

can!). Thanks,

Tabitha

Oddly enough, I just bought some for Myah (5 yrs DS) before I got home

tonight. Our pediatrician recommended it. Myah's sleeping habits are

horrible. She can't get to sleep and when she does she wakes a lot. Last

night she went to her room for bed at 8:30. At 10PM she was still up when I

went to bed. My husband came to bed at

AM and she was asleep. I woke at 1:30AM and she was up playing. I then got

up for work at 6:45 and she was awake playing. I think this has to be

contributing to her behaviors. She gets up several times each night to turn

her light on. I turn it off after she's asleep and the next thing I know,

she's up turning it on again. Last week she came down from one of these

" spells " and fell asleep at school. They carried her onto the bus-asleep,

then my mom carried her off of the bus and into her house (where she baby

sits other children). She did not wake up through 2 passed of people holding

her, then to the couch. We carried her to the car to come home, into our

house, ordered pizza, my brother visited-all while she was asleep (with her

coat on!) It ended up that she fell asleep at 2PM and didn't wake until

8:30. She had a piece of pizza, a bath and then went back to bed. I am just

at my wits end. I was not home at bed time, but my hubby forgot to give it

to her tonight. We'll see how it works. Any other suggestions are welcome!!

falls asleep very well (the best in the family, LOL), but is a

restless sleeper, probably due to sleep apnea. We found that when she

woke at night, she would get up and turn on the light, then it was

" awake " time. We solved that problem by using the pull chain on her

overhead light/ceiling fan so that she can't turn it on from the switch

(which is her usual) when we put her to bed each night. She has a small

lamp by her bedside (in addition to her nightlight), but it only has a

15 Watt bulb in it :-) With her red and white gingham shade, it's

pretty dim. Every morning the main light switch is " on " , but the

overhead light isn't lit.... funny thing..... broken again :-) This is

only a problem on weekends when she gets up earlier and wants to read or

play..... she will come in at 6:30 and say " Mom, can you fix my light? "

It has really helped her stay in bed.

, mom to (10), (8 DS), and (6)

PS. We are careful to " pull the light chain " when she can't see..... I

don't want her to try and climb up there to " fix " the light herself!

I started giving my kids Melatonin in September when we had a very hard time

getting into a sleep routine when school had started. My plan was that I

would try it for a few weeks to get them to fall asleep earlier and then

once we got in the routine they'd be able to fall asleep earlier on their

own. Hasn't happened that way...but the Melatonin has worked

wonderfully...I give it to them about 45min to an hour before I want them to

go to bed and once in bed they're usually asleep within 10-15 minutes. I

usually don't give it to them on the weekends and I've tried several times

going without and if I do it is very difficult to get them to

sleep--especially my daughter who is a real livewire ALL the time. Both

doctors I've talked to felt it was safe to give in small amounts. I give

them each a 1/2 to 1 1mg tablet crushed in applesauce, yogurt, pudding. It

really has worked like a charm with my kids.

Judy

It works right away - it's a thing that has to build up in your system.

Also, it's not like a sleeping pill or sleeping aide.... it is actually what

your body naturally produces. As far as how much to give kids.... I have no

idea if it makes a difference or not. It is very mild - not like she'll pass

out if she takes a whole pill (only 3mg). But as always, to be safe you could

ask the pharmacist. I'm sure they would know.

I asked my pharmacist about melatonin today. I've been giving my ds

Benedryl to help him fall asleep and with his allergies, but am

concerned about side effects, etc. The pharmacist said melatonin is

hormone and used for people with jet lag and said we should stick

with the Benedryl in our case.

I am also going to ask the pdoc about it tomarrow.

Do ask your pdoc about it and let us all know what he/she says. While the

pharmacist is correct, in that melatonin is a hormone, helping with jet lag is

just one of the many uses it has.

I spoke with the pdoc today. He says melatonin would be fine to

use, that he had not heard otherwise and that it is commonly used

for jet lag. I asked which he thought would have fewer side

effects, the benedryl or melatonin and he felt there would be no

difference.

Hmmm... wonder where they got that info. Nothing has hit PubMed yet. There have been many scientists working on a link between scoliosisand melatonin deficiency for years.-->> Ok, here's a little something:> > Moreau's team has established a link betweenadolescent scoliosis and a deficiency in melatonin, a hormone that isinvolved in regulating bone metabolism.> > > > http://www.tbsource.com/Localnews/index.asp?cid=83533> > I'll look forward to seeing more details on this. I've usedmelatonin as a sleep aid for several years. I've always had somedifficulties sleeping. I don't have the common idiopathic scoliosis, but may very well carry the gene.
