This is what it says on the Food & Drug Administration web site about DMSO:

DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide, a solvent derived from wood, which has been the subject of considerable interest for its potential as a drug. Testing of DMSO as a drug began in the early 1960's, but was halted in 1965 after experiments in animals indicated that it had adverse effects on the eyes. Experiments were resumed the following year with restrictions to assure that patients were protected. At present, the only human use for which DMSO has been approved is for interstitial cystitis, a bladder condition.

Testing of DMSO continues for other purposes, such as scleroderma, arthritic conditions of joints, tendinitis, and bursitis. Studies of DMSO for possible use in mental illness have been concluded with no evidence that it is effective for that purpose. No definite conclusions have yet been drawn about DMSO's usefulness in other conditions, such a spinal cord injuries and brain trauma. It has been reported that industrial grade DMSO, devoid of drug labeling, is being used for self-treatment of arthritis and other disease conditions. The industrial grade product is not of the quality used for drug purposes and is not made under conditions that are necessary for the production of human drugs and protection of users. Side effects associated with its use include nausea, headache, and skin rash. Further, since DMSO is a "carrier" chemical, it could deliver harmful substances into the bloodstream, if they are present in impure DMSO through use on the skin. There are no foreign manufactures of DMSO that hold effective NDA's or IND's.

Review of detention data for FY 90-92, indicated 3 detentions were made in FY 90. Of the 3, 2 were commercial size shipments from Showa Industry, Shiga, Japan and chemsiche Fabrik, Zurich, Switzerland.INSTRUCTIONS : Alert local Customs of our interest in this product. Re: one more time

It was mentioned to me yesterday on here that you can get pure grade 99.9% DMSO over the counter in some places. I cannot believe I am saying this again. If you want to use DMSO you better use it under the supervision of a doctor that knows about the properties of DMSO, is familiar with the research around DMSO, knows the side effects of DMSO and can help you if {I cross myself when I say this} you drag in something directly into your bloodstream while using it. I do not know how many times I have to stress that this is not a product that should be used without the supervision of a doctor.

I will also stress that just because that product on the shelf says it is pure grade does not mean it is not veterinary grade. You are not safe using by yourself. So if you want to mess around with DMSO than find a doctor that is well versed in the research and knows how to use it.

Pam and Sue, I cannot agree with you more. It also sounds like something that 1 would have to be compounded with another medication of some sorts in a pharmacy and 2 that I would use as a last resort before trying stronger pain meds. Yipes!! Especially since you would have to make d---- sure the skin where you would apply it would have to be nearly if not completely sterile. Sounds like it could be more trouble than it is worth. Double yipes, the more I think about it, the more caution I realize that would have to be taken to keep everything that that stuff would touch sterile. Is that even possible?

Hi,

I already asked this, but since I got 2 differing responses, I thought I'd put

it out there one more time.

I'm starting my husband on the LDN tonight (he has Mon./Tues. off, so it's a

good time to!). What dose do you recommend he start on?

His symptoms are " parkinson-like " :

*Not much left arm swing

*Stiff left hand (this hand is also much " darker " than the other - like it's got

more circulation)

*Slight tremors occasionally

*Loud swallowing/throat clearing

*Foot contractions

*Halitosis

*Facial mask/harder to speak clearly

The doctor of environmental medicine said he had suppressed adrenals,

insufficient O2 getting to his tissues, and elevated mercury.

Thanks for any help!
