Well, regardless of age, none of us want to do stuff over and over.

Been there and done that with too many others already, right?

BTW, don't worry about age. I may be the oldest around this group (or

not) at age 64 (just went down to get medicare card on monday), but I

know people in their 70s who've done well with bands, and after 4.5

years I'm sure happy with mine.

Good news. I've only had three fills, the last one almost 4 years

ago. Didn't have first one for about six months.

Thank you for the welcome Dan.

4.5 years, that's inspirational. You're right; age is relative and at

49 I thought I might have been pushing it getting the band. I'm

thrilled I did it and so happy to have encounted knowledgable folks

along the way.

You are the first person to tell me that they didn't have a fill for the

first 6 months. I was truly hoping that getting a fill wouldn't

necessarly be routine. In all that I've read so far it seemed that

getting the adjustments were more regular. I'm happy to wait until it

is the right time.

Nice meeting you and have a nice rest of your day.

Welcome. I'm 61 and have had my band since 7/03. Now is about the best time

to do anything that you want to do. Next on my list of things I want to do

is travel from West to East on the train through Canada. As soon as we can,

dh and I are opting for that one.

Hi, ! Welcome!

Fills are given only as needed, never on any set schedule-so I'm glad

your fill person didn't give an uneeded fill.

For some people, fills aren't needed for quite awhile, and this is

fine.

If you're losing well with no fill - from better eating, natural

restriction just from band placement, improving your activity level-

that's great! good for you!

Yes, age is relative. I got my band at 60. As another illustration a

couple days ago I was helping a university student use the library

comptuers (that's what I do) and she sort of whined that she was SO

OLD that she just had a hard time learning new things, etc. She was a

nursing student and I reminded her that she was learning new things in

school, and could do this, and she just had a fear of this particular

new thing. I told her that I'd have a fear of learning how to draw

blood. She said " Oh, that's SO EASY " and I reminded her that it was

for her because she'd done it and practiced it. And that I COULD

learn how to do it, but had no need to. She went on fussing that " but

I'm almost FIFTY " and then told her that I was later that day going to

SS office to sign up for my Medicare Card. She conceded that you're

never to old to learn or do or make progress.

Yeah, another of Dan's long-but-true-and-hopefully-helpful stories.

You'll get used to them, perhaps. I'm perhaps a prime example of this

quote from Blaise Pascal some 350 years ago:

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time

to make it shorter.

> You are the first person to tell me that they didn't have a fill for the

As you'll continue to learn that regarding the band we're all as

different as we are in other aspects of our lives: religious beliefs,

hair color, waist size, gender, height, weight, intelligence, size of

ears, and a million other things.

The rules are generally the same for all of us. And I always remind

people that though many ways are better than others, none of us will

have an identical path in this part of our lives, any more than we do

in others.

Nice to meet you Sandy, I've read so many of your OH posts. I must

say that I am so excited to be banded. Like many, this is the most

important decision that I've ever made for myself and I want to do it

right.

, Glad you're here! :-)

We try to be a much more personal forum, with answers to every post

(by at least one of the wise people here). We don't tolerate the

nastiness, squabbles and crap that erupt regularl on other sites.

Respectful disagreement is welcome, as are all points of view, if

stated " nicely. "

Thanks for the accolades, Sandy. She is right. I was banded when I was 68

and it remains one of the smartest thing I have ever done.

Maybe the pounds come off a little slower but I just lost another one when I was

convinced I had leveled off for good. It would be perfectly agreeable if no

more were to come off but on the other hand dropping to 125 would make me a

century club member and I wouldn't turn it down.

Do not be surprised when friends and family tell you you don't want to lose any

more because it will create age lines in your face, etc. My feeling is that

were that to happen, who says I couldn't regain it I just tell them it is

moot thing because the weight loss appears to have stopped so where is the

problem. I'm thinking I upset the pecking order and as far as I am concerned

that is their problem. I only wish I had means to help them do the same.

What it has meant is that I am off the sleep apnea machine and my blood pressure

is greatly reduced giving me hope that eventually I can quit that as well.

That just leaves cholesterol, bone density and depression meds and who's to say

I can't whip them as well.

I am far more active and as a retired individual, I am committed to lots more

playing - travel and Red Hat activities and theatrical experiences should I see

opportunity. I may be 70 but I am determined not to be labeled 'old'. My

companions tend to be 20 years younger and I'm pretty sure they probably don't

see it quite that way. And when it comes to comparing problems, I am most

content to settle for mine instead of the turmoil I see in their lives. Of

course, that doesn't mean they want to listen to my ideas of how I dealt with

them in the past or how to ward off the future ones.

Please feel free to ask me for any help or advise should you think I might be

able to help.

Hello Marilyn,

Thank you for your indepth response.

You are so right, I've only been banded since 10/8/07 and I've

already heard not to loose too much, things to that nature. One

thing I've never worried about in my entire life is being too thin.

My primary reason for choosing WLS was to avoid, if possible, the

health concerns associated with obesity. I had the surgery before

any problems, but I could tell that over the last couple of years

things were catching up to me. I am also the primary caretaker for

my husband who is newly blind and on hospice. I felt that I needed

to be as strong as I could possibly be for his care, but primarly

because everyone has told me that the stress and physical exertion

takes it's tole on the caretaker as much as the patient. This I am

finding out first hand.

I had been considering WLS for a few years and when the opportunity

presented itself I had to do it. The timing was ideal, the recovery

was textbook and I am doing well with it (no fills as of yet).

This website and the informative folks on it that I've met so far are

the encouragment that I need. I thank you again for your insight and

I will take you up on your offer of questions/concerns in the

future. You are an inspiration.

You are one brave lady to get banded at the same time as the above. I

have some understanding of the issues you're facing from having lost a

little sister and little brother to cancer, and helping both their

spouses with the hospice care. I have a sainted niece who is an RN

and a hospice nurse. I don't know how she does it, but she loves it

because it is SO important, and she really does love the people and

what she can do for them...plus, not many other nurses want to do it.

Best wishes and prayers to you and yours,

Morning Dan,

Actually I'm not that brave I wish I where. I should've done the band

sooner, putting it off, reason after reason. My husband is 12 years

my senior and has been in failing health for 6 years. No time was

ever a good time for me to consider my own health. All my excuses

about being the primary breadwinner, needing to see to home and

hearth and then once he went blind and this summer put into hospice

care, I felt I could no longer neglect my health. I was fortunate

that he was at a stable point and the surgery date was ideal.

Now I am stronger and more able to face what comes next. Even with

the modest amount of time and weight loss so far, I have more energy,

I'll take it!

The caring souls in hospice amaze me. I don't know how they do it,

but I am beyond grateful that they do and people such as they have the

inner strength to help others in this unenveiable time of their lives.

Thank you for your prayers and wishes.

Welcome .

There are a lot of good people on these lyme groups. They will help you

answer lots of questions. Do you have a copy of Dr. B's Guidelines. If not

let me know.
