Guest guest
Hello Enkai First, welcome to the forum and I hope you get all the help and support you need here. Tell us a little about yourself. Are you suffering with hypothyroidism. Have you been diagnosed? What medication are you taking and what problems are you experiencing. Do you have any recent thyroid function tests and if so, please post them on the forum together with the reference range for each test. Have you asked your GP to refer you to an endocrinologist? If so, what was the outcome. Many questions I know, but we like to get to know why our members felt the need to join this forum. Luv - Sheila HiI read some posts saying there is a list of doctors who others havefound to be helpful/open-minded. Just wondering how we can access thelist?ThanksEnkai No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG. Guest guest
Hi Sheila Thanks for your response. I've been taking 50mgs Levothyroxine for about 3 months. On testing, my TSH was 7 and T4 in the normal range so I didn't have overt hypothyroidism but the GP agreed to treat me as I have a strong family history and I was symptomatic - my hair was falling out, v. tired, lots of weight gain, sensitive to cold etc. I've since had some tests done and found that my ferritin is below range so I started taking iron tabs. About a month ago, I had two TSH tests (within two days of each other but at different times of day - a long story!) these came out at 2.5 and 4. I think the iron tabs are helping a bit - I was having palpitations, breathlessness and rapid pulse and that seems to have calmed down somewhat with the iron. But I still don't feel quite as energetic as I used to. Also I seem to be gaining weight again (pre-hypo I was quite slim without dieting/exercising). My current GP is quite cool - she said it can take a while to settle on the right dose. I've decided to wait for a few more weeks and if I am still not right then I will probably go back to see the GP and maybe ask for a small rise in my Levo dose. But I will be moving to a different part of the UK in a couple of months so that is why I was wondering about docs that patients find useful as I know that finding a good doc is like gold dust. Thanks Enkai

Do you mean that if you didn't have a strong family history of thyroid disease, that with a TSH of 7, your GP would NOT have given you a trial of Levothyroxine? Can you tell me what time of day you take your L-thyroxine and your iron tablets?About a month ago, I had two TSH tests (within two days of each other but at different times of day - a long story!) these came out at 2.5 and 4. Can you tell us what time of day each test was done. TSH can change throughout the day, but not all that much. Were they both done at the same place, and if not, were the reference ranges the same for each place.I think the iron tabs are helping a bit - I was having palpitations, breathlessness and rapid pulse and that seems to have calmed down somewhat with the iron. But I still don't feel quite as energetic as I used to. Also I seem to be gaining weight again (pre-hypo I was quite slim without dieting/exercising). This could be because you have low adrenal reserve. Doctors should find out whether you do have this problem first before giving you thyroxine, but they never do. Go to our FILES and do the Adrenal Questionnaire - while there, also do the Candida Questionnaire - and tell us how you score. If you have low adrenal reserve (or Candida Albicans) your body is unable to absorb any thyroid hormone replacement, and you will get palpitations, feeling spaced out, sweating. You need to take some form of adrenal supplement and also sort out any candida problem. Once these have been done, your body will then be able to absorb the thyroid hormone better. Another problem could be that you are not converting the inactive hormone T4 into the active hormone T3. T3 is needed by every cell in your body to make it function. Ask your GP to test both your Free T4 and Free T3. At the same time, have you ever been tested to see if you have antibodies to your thyroid. If you test positive, this means you have Hashimoto's thyroioditis. The antibodies gradually destroy your thyroid gland, and this is the reason your thyroid is unable to put out the thyroid hormones your body needs. My current GP is quite cool - she said it can take a while to settle on the right dose. Try and get the above blood tests done by your GP now Enkai and then we can take things from there. Don't assume you will move and get a GP that knows nothing about hypothyroidism, wait and see first, as some are extremely good and care about helping their patients find what medication and dose is best for them. The doctors on my list are mainly private doctors. Hope thios helps - but meanwhile, any questions, just shout. Somebody will be along to help you. luv - Sheila ThanksEnkai No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG.
