The Diflucan was strictly for the fungus and I would have to say it did

take away symptoms assuming that the fungus was causing my headaches

because I have not had a bad headache since. What I was wondering is if I

have to worry about regrowth. I dont think the fungus was causing the

spasms, I think the spasms are a different problem entirely, just a guess

here but maybe some of the MS symptoms Dr Nicholson talks about???

Muscle spasms have a lot of possible causes. But, in ME the one thing

I'd tend to first suspect, after also discussing this with my doc, is

magnesium deficiency/metabolism disorder, which doesn't usually show up

on a routine serum magnesium test.

There is the rbc mag test and also a cellular test, not covered by most

insurances, at Intracellular labs (or is it " Spectracel " ) in california.

But since mag is safe unless you have compromised renal function, just

adding a mag supplement, slowly, to bowel tolerance (don't let it give

you diarrhea) and see if it helps after a short bit.

Though there has been much discussion about the best oral form, a leading

mag researcher now uses mag oxide, though some swear by mag chloride, mag

citrate, and mag glycinate. I've taken them all and now find the mag-ox

fine, though I have to supplement with IM mag also.

Dear ,

I have been having problems with muscle spasms and joint pain in my

neck, shoulders, and upper back for 5-6 years now. Sometimes the spasms are

so bad just taking a breath can set one off. Usually they are not that bad,

but it has been a problem. I tested positive for rheumatoid arthritis, but

apparently many people with HCV have false positives. My GI insisted I see

a rheumatologist, and sure enough, I did not have it, but X-rays showed

inflammatory arthritis. I take Celebrex on a fairly regular basis. I often

find myself having to take muscle relaxers too. I prefer Norflex because

they don't make me too sleepy. My new PCP also had me start taking

amitriptalyn, which is for chronic pain. (It's also an antidepressant) She

thought I might be taking too much tylenol.

I also spent almost 6 months in physical therapy. It helped with

everything but my neck. I don't know what to do about that. Sometimes it

feels like the vertebrae there are just burning! I have come to believe

that this is somehow related to the HCV. I read somewhere that 87% of

people with HCV complain of spinal pain. That's an awful high percentage to

just be coincidence.

I joined a gym and try to keep those upper body muscles in shape the

best I can. It helps.

Good luck,

Claudine

Hi ,

Are you on Interferon , for that may cause muscle pains.

Or else electrolyte imbalance in Cirrhosis can also be one of the cause

.. You must eat a protein rich diet with adequate calories and

electrolytes. And do not push yourself hard. Cirrhosis does produce

fatigue.

Hi Doc,

I am not on any treatment, because of low platelet count. I have cut back

on my protein because of the cirrhosis.

I will start to substitute other types of protein and see if that helps.

Thanks for being here,

Veg proteins to the tune of 0.5-0.75 g / kg( 2.2 lb) body wt is

permitted in Cirrhosis.

That happens to me sometimes. It definitely seems to be related to heavy

lifting. Usually it's my quad that goes. Sometimes a tricep. It's mildly

annoying, and sort of entertaining. Kind of like having the hiccups. I never

worried about it. Although, I did consider charging co-workers a quarter to see

it.

Okay, I've been sitting here at work for over an hour and my right

shoulder will not stop spasming. It's driving me nuts! I've never

had this before. Little eye twitches, sure. But never a shoulder.

I can look down at it and see it moving under my shirt. I did upper

body on Monday, so I wouldn't think it has anything to do with my

workouts. Any one have any ideas??

Not too worried about it either, but it is annoying! I did have a

very heavy upper body workout on Monday. Thought I was gonna die!

Maybe my shoulder is just realizing now how much I tormented it. I

was planning on doing a lighter upper workout this afternoon. Maybe

that will knock the spasms out of it. :)

Kay, sorry to hear that you are experiencing more muscular spasms. I find that

the higher the pain level the higher the muscle spasms. I take Flexeril

(cyclobenzaprine). If I don't take it I can a tremendous increase in spasms. I

have also found that taking Klonopin 0.5 mg at least once a day also reduces the

spasms and reduces my anxiety about them and the pain.

There is always a period of adjustment. If you have difficulty taking such

medications on an as needed basis, you may try taking them on a daily basis and

see if the side-effects decrease as your body adjusts to their continued

presence. I now take the cyclobenzaprine 3 times a day with a double dose on

the third time before bedtime. I was taking the Klonopin on an as needed basis,

without any significant difficulties. I hope that is what will happen now that

I will be taking Klonopin again beginning tomorrow.

Good luck, Kay. I do understand.

My spasms and cramps seem to lessen when I am sure to get the right amount

of minerals for me. It's different for each person. Since we are stressed

all of the time with an autoimmune disease, we probably need more than our

all knowing government says that we need. I suggest you experiment with it.

When my hand cramps were their worst, I read that large doses of B-6 are

often helpful. I found that time released B-6 was best and I used 400

whatever the measurement is(mg., I think) a day--way past what is the

'recommended' amount.. I'd say that you are going to have to do some

experiemtning to see what works best for you. I have to be sure to get

enough calcium.. I went to one of those mall bone density testing things

recently. The woman there said until me she'd never heard of anyone on more

than 1500mg of calcium per day. My doc in GA recommended to me 10 years ago

that I take 2 grams a day--not to even count the calcium I eat in the 2

grams--that's purely supplementation. She also told me that calcium in the

diet is poorly absorbed. BUT I also know that I have to eat dairy products

rich in calcium in addtion to the supplements. I have found that only

certain brands of calcium work for me--my body likes the cheap stuff --the

expensive name brand stuff hasn't worked for me.

Good luck in your pursuit of relief. I hope I said something that might help

you. It's difficult enough to get the groceries, etc. when we are well, but

doing it and fighting pain and contoritons from spasms makes it a fight.

After the groceries run we deserve to eat out, don't we, fellow cooks?

When my hubby had liver disease he used to cramp up all the time. Ask your

doc for potassium pills. Otherwise, it could be gout in your toes which then

causes the muscles to spasm. Hope this helps. Deb

Hmmm...I'm 32, with SMA 2, and in the past few years, I have had occasional

bouts of muscle twitching, usually in the middle of the night. I wouldn't

describe it as painful, but it makes it virtually impossible to sleep. I find

that getting really warm seems to help. If I can eventually fall asleep, it

always is gone when I awaken. I never had this when I was younger, so it is

new to me, also.

Hi,

I have bouts of twitching toes/fingers, sometime my abdominal muscles

tighten and release for several minutes when I am lying down. It's annoying

but not painful.

I do get painful toe crossing sensation during the night and that hurts!!

I'm curious how many of you experience mild tremors/shaking when you are

doing anything stressful or fatiguing? I really notice after I have been on

the phone for a while that my hand will shake.

Take care

Bye for now

Cheryl,

The pain your son is having sounds similar to repetitive stress

injuries caused by too much time doing whatever. I have shoulder and

neck pain from being at the computer too long, and I get spasms in my

lower back. Here's a resource for people with disabilities and

ergonomics: http://humanics-es.com/recc-disabled.htm
