My bf bought me roses yesterday (my favorite

color) and my older daughter made me a picture. I gave the kids small presents

and we bought special candles to burn this evening for dinner. We’re

getting ready to make heart shaped muffins. My bf had to go to Barcelona for the day so I can go to bed

early or stay up and wait for him (his plane should get in at 10pm) But he’ll

be tired as he had to be at the airport at 4am. Anyway I plan on doing some

cleaning so I can exercise this evening. And if my bf isn’t tired

maybe I will play computer games with him (he always wants me to play WOW with

him) I doubt he will be up to anything more energetic.

Actually, my husband and I celebrate February 13th, because that is the day we met face to face for the first time. (We actually met in December online, but didn't "meet" until the 13th of February.) On the 14th, I made him dinner for the first time, so on Valentines, we always have Salsa Chicken and Rice. We went to dinner last night to celebrate, then exchanged gifts (things we needed for our new house...LOL) and had our special dinner at home tonight.

up on the subject of bee goo/propolis? I really like the tuberose and

honey abs and want to know your experience when blending Honey abs. with

Cocoa abs...sounds yummy. I love Tuberose and realize it is a white

Let me know more of your experience with Honey abs.

When I was growing up, my great-Aunt grew hundreds of damask roses in

her yard. She mulched them with cocoa hulls, and I spent many happy

hours sitting near her roses smelling the rose and cocoa together.

These two scents are inextricably entwined for me.

I have always thought that rose and cocoa would be the perfect

Valentine's day combination. If I were making a perfume, I'd use a

vanilla-y base, with some Peru balsam, sandalwood, and a drop of

patchouli to enhance the rose essences. I would use several forms of

rose for the middle note, and maybe some warm spices and a soft,

vibrant green note. I think some edible notes in the top, such as

bergamot, might round out the blend nicely.

Feel free to use whatever ideas might appeal to you. Do let me know

what you do and how you like it!

Yes I find the rose cocoa combo dynamite and it actually caught me by

surprise. I was mixing and bleding different combos and the cocoa and

rose really make a nice pair..the tagetes I added I didn't intially think

I would like but it creates an added dimension...I am going play around

with the base...maybe start with the Peru Balsam...nice...like the

bergamot as well!!

Lovely..

Well, actually, I don't know. I don't have honey abs either! I was just

wondering/thinking it might be a good match. I have a sample of tuberose, I

should try sampling the tuberose with my cocoa abs to see for sure. That being

said, I have definitley tried the others. I made a blend consisting of those

essences for a client, for a Christmas present for his mother-she loved it. I

have also blended those essences into cocoa butter to wear on my skin, and as we

all know cocoa butter smells like chocolate, and it was quite nice.

Lesle,

Funny that I noticed this post only now, I just announced my limited

edition for Valentine's Day today on my blog!

It's my Roses et Chocolat perfume, and it's what it says - three types

of roses and chocolate, as well as my own amber compound, pink pepper,

nutmeg and mace. Here is the link:

http://ayalasmellyblog.blogspot.com/2007/01/new-perfume-roses-et-chocolat.html

Tagetes is amazing with chocolate. It's quite magical actually. I

think it creates an illusion of coconut, a very fruity and tropical

accord together.

I have two other chocolate based perfumes in my collection - Guilt

(chocolate, orange blossom, mimosa, orange and amber) and Film Noir

(Chocolate, patchouli and myrrh). I really love these combinations!

Other notes that go really well with cocoa are quite endless and we

all know that the proportions matter tremendously, but here are some

ideas:

Anything citrus:

Orange, grapefruit, lime, clementine, tangerine. Citrus and chocolate

taste good together, and the smell good together too.

Any spices:

Cinnamon, cardamom, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, ginger - you name it.

Cocoa is warm and foody, and so are spices.

Balsamic notes:

All the resins and balsams with the sweet vanillic notes are fantastic

with chocolate. These include benzoin, tolu, peru and copaiba balsams.

Rich florals:

narcotic and exotic florals provide a contradiction to the chocolate

and a sensual aspect that turns it from food to perfume. Jasmine,

rose, orange blossom, tuberose, ylang ylang, carnation and champaca -

these will all be fantastic.

Warm, dry, woody, smoky:

Pairing strong woody notes with chocolate creates a contrast, but this

can be interesting and original. For instance: patchouli, vetiver,

tobacco, leather accords, cade, choya nakh, choya loban, etc.

These are just a few things that are a sure thing. But I am sure there

is a lot more to chocolate than that.

Good luck!

Hi ,

I'm glad to hear that your client loved the perfume!

I remember when you were first mentioning taking on

that client so it's great to know it worked out so

well!

I just got some honey absolute and it is really nice.

I have worked with beeswax absolute which I also love

but the honey has that really rich honey smell that is

just so sticky and delicious!

I wanted to ask for cocoa absolute recommendations

because I have one that I am really not thrilled with

at all. It smells a bit like dirt. I have heard that

the White Lotus one is nice and I see that it is

pourable which has its appeal. Are there other ones I

should check out? Thanks!

I always thought that the two are the same. They sometimes are called

honey absolute and sometimes called beeswax absolute. Am I missing

something here?

Anywyas, they vary greatly, just as honey varieties taste and smell

differently based on the flowers they are made of and where in the

world etc.

The cocoa I tried from both A Little Olfactory and Eden Botanicals is

great, and pourable. I got a cocoa absolute from et that really

sucked as it smelled more like scorched chocolate or like Marmite. It

was useful for some things, but it didn't have that obvious and

wonderfully caramely quality that and Will (the two suppliers

above) offer.

Hi Ayala,

Actually, I don't know if they are technically

different but the two types I have are very different.

The beeswax absolute I have is more like a concrete--

it is waxy and smells more like beeswax. (I got it

from a supplier that I now know is questionable but it

is still very nice.) Whereas the honey absolute I have

is a thick liquid and smells like a richer version of

honey itself. I would like to know if anyone can

answer this question. Is there a technical

difference?

Thanks Ayala! I actually have a little section of in

my notebook of tips from you! Mostly about

compatibilty of various notes. So thanks for all of

that too.

I have been working on a choc/vanilla blend as well. It started out

as a wedding blend for someone, but has been transmuting in the

bottle for months. I have used cocoa abs. vanilla which I tinctured,

nutmeg, jasmine, lavender abs. mate, and oakmoss and vetiver. I have

been sniffing it since last spring, I recently added some himalayan

fir, and some 1%cade dilution, and I think it is finally getting

somewhere, it is definitely not a summer blend, but for winter, it

seems like it might be ok....

Thanks. I made some for the clients girlfriend, his sister, and his mother.

Apparently, they all loved their prospective scents. He also said that I was

right on the nose with the types of perfumes each of them liked, and I've never

met any of them, well except for the girlfriend. He told me that she really

liked lillies, so I went about creating something " lilyish " . He told me that

she wants to ask me questions about what I do. Now, one of the store leaders

wants a perfume too!

I must say that I really undersold myself, so much that I'm pretty embarrased

about it, so I'm not going to talk about it! LOL.

It was great, my roomate was with me in the kitchen when I was making the

blends. She was fascinated and loved the scents. I kept testing them with her

and you should have seen the rapturous looks on her face! She told me that I

need to stick with this. It was a total ego boost and a confirmation that I'm

doing " MY THANG " !

It is cool, the guy(the client) is really supportive of this and he is a

filmaker and offered to make a " commercial " when I get a website, and he also

has a graphic artist friend that I could use to design my stuff-so I've got a

lot of stuff lined up! It's really exciting. Next-to get Oprah's attention!

I got mine from Eden Botanicals(I've been getting almost all of my essences

sampled any from anywhere else, so I can't really compare it, but like I said, I

really like it anyway.

I was thinking of you today and thinking of a post by ZZ when she

said it would be nice to have an upscale division of Wld Oats or other

organic health conscious places like Whole Foods where organic perfumes

could be sold by a well informed person to explain their benefits and

watch over the precious gems and make sure they won't be taken by less

ethical people..You're the guy that could plant the seed and oversee the

perfume division of W Foods...maybe not your dream maybe is but if you

have upper managements attention and you've already started teaching

classes....it's a national chain...wondering your thoughts on this?

Hey, , glad to hear that after all this time on the group,

you're getting down to blending, and seem to have a natural (hey,

that's no joke!) knack for it. Your roommate seems to be having the

response that many do that have not been exposed to real natural

aromatics before -- rapture. It's what we're all about ;-)

The one from at http://alittleolfactory.com is luscious, and

I'm addicted to it. Gorgeous. Don't know about WL one, but you can sample it.

Lesle, WF is now selling organic perfumes. Made with synthetic

scents. Yes, it is legal.

Somebody in the WF headquarters visits http://.com on

Organic, with synths is legal??? Isn't that a contradiction of tems? I

had to read it three times to even grasp it. This alone would throw the

doors wide open for misleading advertising and con artists. But that's

just my perspective.

Thanks for sharing this Anya. Very interesting

I'm sort of mixed about it, actually. I was reading a reply to this that

said that NP should be in upscale stores and botiques and I really agree with

this. That is how I would prefer to sell mine, for instance. However, Whole

Foods is upscale and its customers make a lot of money(it is called " Whole

Paycheck " after all). I can't afford to get my groceries there, and I get a

discount!!! I've always thought of WF as a gourmet grocery store with a

natural, healthy emphasis, but not a health food store per se. I mean, we sell

fried chicken at the hot bar for heavens sakes! I also think it's terrible that

we tout ourselves as natural and organically minded and we pretty much only sell

synthetically scented products(other than a couple of brands), and our

" perfumes' are definitely synths. It just seems really hypocritcal of the

company.

As far as me being the liason between the company and natural perfumers, I

would love it, but I've tried to get over to the whole body department(the

nutrition and bodycare dept.) twice, but they won't have me! LOL! I wouldn't

even know where to go to get some NP's in the store. But I know who to

ask......

Anya, I'm intrigued by the fact that some WF bigwig is visiting the website.

Maybe we will have some NP's soon.

I dislike the 'tacky' and commercial side and the forced expectations

similar to other commercial holiday(vacations).

I think for me 'hate' is too strong a word.

Let's see now ... people need a commercially sanctioned holiday to

remember to tell someone that is important to them that they are

loved. What's wrong with this picture?

My opinion is that if you cannot show your loved one how important

they are 364 days out of the year, that one Valentine's Day in

February every year isn't going to accomplish the job.

True love is something that exists and is expressed every day through

deed and action and words, not by a bunch of dead plants, a sugar

rush and a piece of cardboard.

That being said, I think if two people express love towards each

other every day of the year, Valentine's Day is romantic by virtue of

it being yet another opportunity to express that love ... but without

all the commercialization that usually accompanies the day.

I remember those Valentine's Day parties at school. Those were just popularity contests that I always hated. There was such a hype during the party you didn't think about it, but once everyone was going through the cards, then you noticed. Most people gave cards to everyone, but then it broke down into groups where people would group together to look at each other's cars, which was then you did see the less popular people left out. Granted that is life, but in this case it is a forced situation.

Valentine's day has also been commercialized to the point of absurdity, just like the other holidays.

Why I hate Valentines Day! I hate Valentines Day because it debases romance. I hate it because in grade school the typical sort of thing the teachers made the students do was to each give out five valentines or more to others in the classroom. It turned into the worst sort of popularity contest you can imagine. I hate Valentines Day because it has become more and more commercialized. It's basically a kind of Christmas for adults. This year there were seemingly endless ads on television about people with way more money than they know what to do with spending it on ridiculously expensive jewelry. The height of the sort of thing Thorsten Veblen criticized as status-related conspicuous consumption. I hate Valentines Day because hardly anybody even remembers anything at all about Valentine. (And although I don't care much about that particular person, the careless

ignorance of the name just seems reflective of the general mindless bovine indiiference people have toward history and their place in it. Mea culpa too.) I hate Valentines Day because it's always a reminder to me at least of how the people who do have the money to celebrate it usually here in the USA are working under some of the worst worker conditions in the industrial world and almost never have time off. In many places in europe, France in particular, almost all workers get a month off every year. I just don't think most workers in the USA who have regular jobs wind up being very romantic in the bulk of their lives because they just don't have the time for it. And in fact there are regularly articles about that every couple of years in major magazines such as Time and Newsweek about how marriages suffer in the USA because couples spend so much time working and other activities. (And if you do take your official vacation

time many companies have widely known reputations for being much more likely to fire you, with complete impunity of course.) So I hate Valentines Day because what it claims to represent has been eviscerated by corporate (dare I say it...fascist?) Amerika. In Huxley's Brave New World workers once-a-year took a set of drugs to induce what was called a "passion surrogate" and then they went back to the routines for another year. Valentines Day for the masses living in the USA is a passion surrogate that people have settled for. Valentines Day has debased romance for all these reasons and more. On a more positive note- I suggest everyone read Helen Fisher's recent book "Why We Love". Contrary to normal intuition, learning about how romantic feelings happen I think actually increases the experience. Helen Fisher is a leading world anthropologist and quite probably the leading

world expert on the subject of romantic love. http://helenfisher.com/ For what it's worth, I also like reading through books like "1001 romantic things to do". Heph ravenmagic2003 <ravenmagic2003@...> wrote: Tom wrote: "You may have noticed that I did NOT wish you all a happy Valentine's Day.

That is because I know that for some people, Valentine's Day is a miserable day for them. Do you like Valentine's Day or hate it? Why? ... <snip> ..."Let's see now ... people need a commercially sanctioned holiday to remember to tell someone that is important to them that they are loved. What's wrong with this picture? My opinion is that if you cannot show your loved one how important they are 364 days out of the year, that one Valentine's Day in February every year isn't going to accomplish the job.True love is something that exists and is expressed every day through deed and action and words, not by a bunch of dead plants, a sugar rush and a piece of cardboard. That being said, I think if two people express love towards each other every day of the year, Valentine's Day is romantic by virtue of it being yet another opportunity to express that love ... but without all the commercialization that

usually accompanies the day.RavenCo-Administrator Want to start your own business? Learn how on Small Business.
