I got 2 weeks of Doxycycline for acute Lyme with EM rash. All my symptoms went

away so I thought all was well. A year and a half later I was diagnosed with

hypothyroidism and never felt completely well after that. It took 6 years (as I

began to have mood swings, severe fatigue & cognitive issues) before I was

tested for Lyme. Now its chronic and after a year of aggressive ABX (including

4 months IV) I am better but still sick.

Two weeks for acute Lyme is not always enough. An LLMD would know that and

treat accordingly.

My husband was bit by a tick, found it within a few hours (he had been raking)

and took 100 mg 2x/day for 2 weeks preventatively. Within 2 months, he was very

sick, and tested positive for lyme. Once he saw an LLMD, he was told that 6

weeks of abx after a tick bite is what he recommends.

Kelley, Ceftin is fine for spirochetes, but won't touch L-forms or cysts. And

current thinking is that if you don't treat for those, the Lyme will very likely

come back. What did your LLMD give you to treat those?

present soon after. He also likes to see the tick if possible.

misdiagnosed by 2 family docs and finally got in to the LLYM 3 months after the

bite and I had BOTH types of Lyme rashes and most of the other Lyme symptoms.

Two weeks after starting Ceftin my vitamin D level was found to be 8 (and should

be at least 30). Within two weeks of starting vitamin D, I felt ALOT better!

All of my Lyme symptoms were gone after 5 months on ABX so I did one more month

on ABX, one month on half of the ABX dose, and now I'm off and still feeling

great. Hopefully I will never see another Lyme symptom. (I'll most likely stay

on Vit D for life).

An LLMD I like says here (

http://www.lyme-disease-testing.com/lyme_treatment.html 6th paragraph down )

that Chronic Lyme Disease can't be cured by ANY amount of oral antibiotics.

" Peer reviewed medical literature describing late stage Lyme disease

consistently show the involvement of the central nervous system. And the only

antibiotics that cross the blood-brain barrier, and have the hope of eradicating

the Lyme disease bacteria can ONLY be administered intravenously. "

The doctors believe that if you treat immediately upon infection, two weeks of

oral antibiotics will kill ALMOST all Lyme infections. This seems to be true.

But once the disease digs into the tissue, my wife's experience makes me agree

with the doctor above - IV antibiotics become essential.

Unfortunately even people who do long-term IV antibiotics do not necessarily

recover. I was told from the start by my LLMD (founding member of ILADS) I

would need IV ABXs. But he starts slowly with oral ABXs .He took me off all

ABXs after 4 months on IV Rocephin & Biaxin (total of 12 months of ABXs) because

of weight loss and drowsiness--it wasn't working. I've shown no evidence of

co-infections. I personally know people who relapsed every time they got off

IV ABXs. And most insurance companies won't pay for more than one month of IV

treatment. There are risks involved as well: clots, infection, gall bladder

sludge or stones etc.

Cure Unknown by Pamela Weintraub is essential reading for anyone effected by

tick-borne illness. She was a science NY Times writer. She and her family were

all infected numerous times and spent years trying to get diagnosed. It is so

well written and researched. And a great read--impossible to put down, like a

good mystery. It follows the research, politics and the personal stories of

several families (including her own).
