Or wish there was some other way.. Tell me what you really think of it. I am doing a school project on fusions and need to know if its worth it or if it is a waste of time. Guest guest
I had my fusion for a double curve...two harrington rods in 1977. The reasons they gave me for doing it then are not valid now. So yes part of me really does regret it. Guest guest
I've had 2 fusions. After my first fusion of L4-L5 everything was good for about 4 years. Then I started having bad pain again. They did an MRI and found that one of the screws had broken free of the bone and was in my spinal canal. They removed the hardware about 5 years after the first fusion but " didn't realize " that the fusion had never taken place. I walked around for 1-1/2 years with nothing holding my back together. Now I've been fused again but they had to go up one more disk and they fused L3-L4-L5. I'm put back together now but due to the 1-1/2 years of my back banging around, my spinal cord is damaged and there is nothing they can do about that. I'm looking into getting a Spinal Cord Stimulator now. I used to ride a motorcycle, work in the gardens, clean the house - things that use your back. Now I can't even sit in a chair for more than about 30 minutes unless I have something in front of me to lean on for support. I have to sit in a hard chair - no more Lazy Boys for me - so I spend my time sitting at a desk while my husband sits in the living room. We can talk to each other but it's not like sitting in the same room. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I can do most exercises except anything high impact. I walk, do pilates, some yoga, free weights aerobic videos, take the stairs at work etc. I've also just started a diet to lose some weight to see if that aleviates the pain. 10-15 pounds may help. Back to the regret question. I went through alot as a senior in high school wearing a body cast for 7 months, then lost alot of my flexibilty and dancability. Over the years the stiffness at the top of my thighs has me bending forward more than I would like. I get massage and chiropractic for all of that. At least the insurance covers it. > > > > From: April <nanny04email2me (DOT) net> > > Subject: Update > > spinedisorderssuppo rtgroup@gro ups.com > > Date: Wednesday, February 11, 2009, 7:47 PM > > > > Hey Everyone, I am now two weeks post surgery. Guest guest
It was worth it for me. I am so much better now that I've had it. I'll never feel like a person with a normal healthy back because I've had multiple surgeries, but I am so much better now. Before my fusion, I couldn't sleep night after night the pain was so bad. I'd try to sleep on the floor and I'l lie on ice all night. I couldn't cook dinner for my family. Couldn't play with them outside or go out to a park or museum. I was crippled with my pain. Now I lead a normal life. I can't work full time and I've had to change my job and I still take pain meds and have injections. But my fusion has given me my life back. --- From: April <nanny04email2me (DOT) net> Subject: Update spinedisorderssuppo rtgroup@gro ups.com Date: Wednesday, February 11, 2009, 7:47 PM Hey Everyone, I am now two weeks post surgery. Guest guest
Hey Dawn, You and I have the same story, though at least I saw a doc who realized when my screws were broken that I wasn't fused. I had to go to another doc though to hear that. My original surgeon didn't enlighten me. Amazing, screws don't break unless there is movement, instability, non-union. My guess is that your surgeon went in to remove the screws and knew full well that the was a non-union there and probably put in some crushed bone and bone putty and hoped it would fuse on it's own. Â If you got a copy of your operative report, I could tell you for sure. Guest guest
Hi so what about the laminectomy where they open up the disc and give you more space to move? Apparently the stenosis is what has caused my right SI joint to start to fuse according to the Orthopedic Specialist in Baltmore. The Radiofrequency I had done to the right SI joint really took care of that pain, now Im just dealing with the right leg sciatica and foot numbness and fasiculations in the toes.... Guest guest
Yes, it's in the back of my mind that my future may include use of a wheelchair as well. My first surgery was at age 16. I had six in 15 years. Too many. The chances of my back being like it is right now when I'm 60 are slim to none. I am so sorry that you have to go this route. Guest guest
It's possible that a laminectomy may help, but it would depend on what your MRI looks like. The pedicles are never removed for that or fusion, so if that's the source of your stenosis, it won't help. A laminectomy is a pretty minor surgery so that wouldn't be bad. I've rarely if ever seen a lami done for stenosis or a fusion either, unless a patient couldn't walk anymore.  I don't know how the stenosis could have caused your SI to fuse, I'm not aware of a connection there. I'm glad the RF worked for you there though. How long have you gotten relief for? I've only had a few weeks of relief so it isn't an option for me anymore. My pain doc is talking about a spine stimulator which I am uninterested in...at least not now.  --- From: April <nanny04email2me (DOT) net> Subject: Update spinedisorderssuppo rtgroup@gro ups.com Date: Wednesday, February 11, 2009, 7:47 PM Hey Everyone, I am now two weeks post surgery. Guest guest
Hello Everyone, I have been quite quiet in this group, but I am seeing a bunch of people that are having the same issue as me. My story probably sounds like some of yours. I had a triple lamenectomy in Sept of 98, then 8 months later I underwent a triple fusion L4-SG1 with fixation rods and cages, and I had to wear that dreadful brace as well. After my second surgery i developed a post surgical infection, so on top of the brace, I had to go home with a PICC line and was on IV antibiotics for 5 months. Ten years post surgery, I am still having lower back pain, and now it's beginning to migrate down my legs with sharp pains, almost like someone is stabbing me in my legs. Numerous MRI's, facet injections, and that one test where they place needles in your muscules, (i can't remember the name of that test) and i'm still in pain. I take Neurotin, Tramadol, and Amitriptilin at night to get to sleep, Not sure what else I can do and my surgeon states that there is nothing more they can do other than a spinal stimulator. That is something i'm entertaining now. Has anyone had any experience with that?? Guest guest
, That is what I am dealing with now. There are days when I cannot get out of bed. I always told myself that if I could work, I would. I just hate the thought of being 44 years old and on disability. Thankfully my job is a sit down job, however as you all know even sitting for a long period is difficult. My restrictions state, " no sitting or standing for 20 minutes or longer and no lifting or bending " tell me how can one find a job to fit that description. I will keep on keeping on until I can't. I would give ANYTHING to get rid of the pain. It's excruciating, and I have had 2 back surgeries that I had hoped would take away some of the pain. Guest guest
, I would be more than happy to help you with your project. I am 10 years post fusion. I was diganosed with DDD and Spondy in 1998 and underwent a triple lamenectomy L2-L5. Recovery from that surgery went very well, and up until 8 months later, I was fairly pain free. Then in 1999, and severe back and leg pain, I underwent a triple lower lumbar fusion w/fixation rods and cages. The surgery was approximately 8 hours long because there was some complications due to scar tissue from my previous surgery. I had to wear the brace that everyone has been talking about, and mine was white. I told the woman who fitted me for the brace that if I had to wear it, that it had to look good so she put a Tweety Bird stencil on the back. I had to wear that brace for 6 months. After the fusion I develped an infection, and after numerous testing, the infection specialist diagnosed it as a rejection of my body of the metal, and prescribed a PICC line. I went home with an IV in my arm and I had to administer 2 medications (Vancomyacin and Levaquin) three times a day. My SED rate at discharge was 90 and normal is 20 or below. Each week during recovery a nurse would come to my home and take blood to check my SED rate, and it took many months to get my SED rate to normal limits. The pain post surgery was less, but after physical therapy, and strengthening exercises I am still in a lot of pain. I am now entertaining the idea of a spinal stimulator for pain. I have done numerous facet injections, and pain meds and still am in pain. Would I do it again, YES because post surgery I am in less pain then before, the recovery was HELL though, and I won't lie to anyone about that. Guest guest
actually I heard them snap and I fell and it was too painful to walk. it took three months to get in to the specialist. they took x-rays and confirmed they broke. Guest guest
I was told by my doctor that sitting down puts the most pressure on the spine. I have a desk at my job that allows me to stand while I work, and it is quite successful for me. The more I sit, the more pain I experience. ---------- Thankfully my job is a sit down job, however as you all know even sitting for a long period is difficult. > > Tonja
Guest guest
I chose to listen to my GP and ignore all surgical specialists - after much research. I am hopeful for artificial parts - one surgery - and no incrementally linked pole from head to tail-bone. It took courage to ignore the surgical advice, but surgeons do surgery, so asking their opinion unusually results in an answer of What type of surgery; asking the patients often proves that optimistic surgical opinions fall short of the surgical hope. Additional surgeries are very often needed, once you start. Vince On Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 8:39 AM, <matthew_paul_18@...>wrote: > Everyone that has had a fusion, What do you think of it. Guest guest
Tell your boss that you have a note from your doctor saying he has to buy you a recliner! Guest guest
Wow...Vince I have to say you are terribly misguided. I don't know any surgeons who operate on every person who walks in and has something wrong with their backs. I have worked with more than 20 spine surgeons and I can tell you they don't operate on people who don't absolutely need the surgery. They turn people away from surgery every day. Â The LAST person's advice I trust is my GP...unless I have the flu, strep throat or i need a refill of my birth control... I can tell you that GP's are a " jack-of-all-trades...master of none " kind of crew. They do play a great role in everyday medicine...but NOTHING surgically related. They are uneducated on the newest surgical techniques and statistics. I REALLY, REALLY have to encourage you to rethink your thought processes in regards to the surgical opinions you have. Those days os surgeons operating on everyone who has something wrong with their backs is long over.
