Guest guest
Hi JK, Welcome to the group. I started Lexapro a little over a month ago. I feel pretty good on it. If you want to switch from Zoloft to Lexapro, you should talk to your doctor and I'm sure she'll let you do it if you explain why you want to. I have never been on antidepressants before so I don't know what it's like to switch. Colleen jlkenney55 <jlkenney55@...> wrote: Hi everyone. I just registered in this group. I have only used the once before and I learned a lot. I am currently taking Zoloft for PTSD/anxiety and I think it is helping, but I find it gives me the jitters and sort of exacerbates my jumpiness. My Aunt recommended that I try Lexapro because she feels great on it and we basically are the same person:) I am concerned switching, I don't want to have to go through the initial adaptation phase again with a new drug. Has anybody ever switched before? Do you have to go through all the extreme side effects all again before becoming adapted? I realize everybody has different experiences, but I am having trouble with Zoloft. However, I am losing weight and I LOVE that! Sorry for the long post. Guest guest
Hi Colleen, Yeah, I think that is a good approach. My doctor (when I can actually get in contact) more or less says it is up to me. He doesn't give me any advice. I have been reading a LOT of literature from Pub Med and have generally come to the theory that Lexapro might be better for my symptoms and concerns based on some of the papers I have read. This is my first time with any medication but asthma inhalers and I was REALLY uneasy about embarking on this path. Still kind of tempted to taper off zoloft and go back to what I am familiar with. Guest guest
I don't like taking medicine either, but I'll continue to take the Lexapro because it's better than lying around crying all the time and being irratable. I'm on three meds every day now. One for thyroid, one for blood pressure, and now one for depression. I addition, I just finished a ten day couse of a strong antibiotic for a tooth infection in which the infection even got into the bone around the tooth. I had to take them every six hours. I was so tired of taking all those pills. At least I'm back to only three a day now. Colleen jlkenney55 <jlkenney55@...> wrote: Hi Colleen, Yeah, I think that is a good approach. Guest guest
I know what you mean. As tempted as I am to drop the Zoloft, I have to admit, I do feel better. I am still VERY jumpy, but I am sleeping through the night and I'm able to sort of keep the flight reaction sort of in check. Also, I was very surprised to find that I am less likely to cry as well. I guess a little depression was involved, as I generally feel more positive. That is nice. Plus, as I mentioned, I LOVE the decreased appetite! > Hi Colleen, > Yeah, I think that is a good approach. Guest guest
I was on zoloft for a while and it gave me very bad headaches. Then I went to Celexa and I was fine but when I lost my insurance my PCP gave me some lex. samples since he didn't have Cel. and (after clearing it with my psyc.) have been on it ever since and that's been over three years. The worse side effect I feel is the tiredness which could also be from the FMS/CFS. ak --- jlkenney55 <jlkenney55@...> wrote: > Hi everyone. I just registered in this group. Guest guest
That is good to know. I have awful headaches on zoloft as well - I just tried to ignore them. That could be why I blasted through my recently purchased bottle of advil. I am so happy with the Zoloft induced appetite suppression that is outweighing most of my adverse effects. Probably not the best approach I am going to try taking the zoloft at night and see if that changes anything. I am seeing a new doctor on Wednesday and will discuss Lexapro. My other doctor just said, " it's up to you what you want to switch to " . No advice at all. Plus, he never calls me back - even when he told me to call him if I had any side effects. As long as I can get up in the morning and don't have a terrible hand tremor I'll be happy. Joanie > > > Hi everyone. I just registered in this group. Guest guest
Joanie, That is irresponsible of your doctor to say " it's up to you what you want to switch to " ! That's outrageous and and on the verge of malpractice. Regular MD's, in my experience, don't know a how lot about the meds we need. I urge you and anyone else in this group to seek the advice of a psychiatirst! Also blood work should be a part of the process. Have blood drawn and analyzed to see how you are doing in general. It's a real eye opener. Make the psych or MD explain the results of your blood test to you. Before you go in for your next appointment, Google the heck out of each medication and then some. Take notes and make notes on a notebook size calendar showing your ups and downs and whatever else you may have been feeling. I have a calendar specifically for detailing my sleep patterns and how I feel in the day. Then when your appt rolls around you are informed and educated. Good Luck, Liz “We have loved the stars too fondly to fear the night.†Re: Hi guys That is good to know. I have awful headaches on zoloft as well - I just tried to ignore them. Guest guest
Thanks for the tip Liz. I never would have thought blood work would be important. What specifically is of concern? I agree with the nearing malpractice bit. I called him one week with increasing breating problems (asthma) and he never called me back. I ended up going to urgent care because I didn't know what else to do. He clearly is not up to the task. My pschologist and I have talked about it and she recommended effexor, but was open to discussion about others. From all the pub med papers I have read, it seems that Lexapro is more effective because it has a better binding affinity/specificity. The less extraneous drug binding that occurs, the less side effects would occur (I would think). Particularly weight gain. I found a great paper discussing how theoretically, these drugs should suppress carbohydrate craving, yet historically people have gained weight. That carbohydrate craving and subsequent weight gain was attributed to the drug binding to different receptors, not just the serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (hence, my theory about a more specific drug, having less side effects). Although, some of the big drug trials seem to show it has equal tolerability when compared to celexa and others. There are some really helpful papers out there on the topic. That reminds me. Has anybody found the moodtracker.com website? That is a great way to keep track of your state of being on a day to day basis. Joanie > > > > > Hi everyone. I just registered in this group. Guest guest
They need to look at your thyroid function for one. You thyroid being off can cause problems in the anxiety/depression area. Also, if you're female they need to check hormone levels. Other than that it's pretty basic: White cell count, stuff like that. Barbara Re: Hi guys I'm new to this. Guest guest
It's always a good idea to get blood work done before our type of meds are prescribed, especially Lithium. It gives the MD or the psych a better picture of what's going on inside your body. For one, blood tests would determine if you are pre-diabetic or hypoglycemic for one, also determining if liver enzymes are high or low depending on alcohol consuption and that could affect your meds. And while you have the results in front of you, ask to have explained your good and bad cholesterol. Also, what's important to request a B12 analysis. As we know, that is so important to our energy level and B12 is very important in combating stress. Liz “We have loved the stars too fondly to fear the night.†Re: Hi guys I'm new to this. Guest guest
Lots of things can affect liver enzymes, not just alcohol. Prescription meds can affect liver enzymes. And of course for those who have hepatitis C, liver enzymes may always be elevated, slightly or otherwise. My blood pressure is high, my cholesterol is very low, and my blood sugar seems ok. My calcium is normal, my potassium is a bit low. Colleen lizzstergiou@... wrote: It's always a good idea to get blood work done before our type of meds are prescribed, especially Lithium. Guest guest
Colleen, Very true what you say about the liver, but it seems that many of us have or do self medicate with alcohol, so that's why I mentioned it. My liver enzymes have always been a bit high due to a blood transplant I received 2 hours after being born. I have received false positives on Hep C because of this. I am probably borderline Hep C, but the liver enzyme level is barely elevated. Of course if you are heavy to obsese, your liver enzymes would be higher as well. Guest guest
I've never been a drinker. I don't like the taste and I don't like waking up with headaches. Besides, I have hepatitis C, and those with hep C should never drink alcohol. You can't be borderline Hep C. You either have the virus or you don't. How do you know the positives for Hep C were false? If you had a blood transfusion prior to 1994, you could actually have the virus. There are many websites about Hep C. Guest guest
Colleen, I know my results for Hep C were false because I had surgery a few years back at Cedars Sinai in Beverly Hills with an very reputable surgeon. Guest guest
Thanks for the tips guys. I went to student wellness (I am in a graduate program) today to see a different doctor and that was the first thing she asked for: blood tests. Liz, you make a good point about alcohol, and while I don't abuse I definitely like to get my drink on. Has anybody had a bad experience with Lexapro and alcohol? I didn't with Zoloft, but I just picked up my shiny new Lexapro script and saw an alcohol warning. I hadn't read anything about that, so I am not sure if that is just the " don't drink if you are depressed " type warning of if it is the " you might have liver failure " if you drink type warning. Does anybody know? Joanie > > > > > > > Hi everyone. I just registered in this group. I > > > > have only used the > > > > once before and I learned a lot. Guest guest
Joanie, I used to drink socially, a few glasses of wine, a couple of beers here and there. Now with Lex, I drank half a glass of white wine and I was drunk!!!! So you see Lex does affect alcohol intake. Best of Luck, Liz “We have loved the stars too fondly to fear the night.†Re: Hi guys Thanks for the tips guys. Guest guest
That's not bad at all. That's within normal range. I've known people who had enzyme levels as high as 300. Guest guest
Lexapro increases the effects of alcohol. It's better to stay away from the alcohol.
