Guest guest
I have a line in my contact letter that says that I think the physical limitations caused by the MGB are one of the best benefits. I never did have very strong willpower before. I was a sneak eater-- but not any more! :-) Kathy in VA -------------- Original message -------------- From: " Lea Conner " <leaconner1971@...> Kathy, I have dreams about my mother's homemade bread. It was so good, but I'll tell you, I will probably never have it again. (This isn't a bad thing, as a loaf of her sheepherder's bread -- made in a cast iron Dutch oven -- has a whole stick of butter in it!) The MGB gives you mandatory willpower: While anyone can say nothing tastes as good as being thin feels, that doesn't necessarily play out when confronted with temptation. But, with the MGB, if you eat something that you shouldn't, you're feeling like crap immediately. As far as the Lactaid goes, I've started taking it with every meal. (Most food has some kind of milk product anyway.) Sure it's a bit of a cost, but I'm not having trouble with gas anymore. Lea > > Lea-- you and I sound about exactly the same! I haven't tried Lactaid though. I really miss cottage cheese so I might give it a try. Eggs have been no problem, but I usually eat mine over easy. Scrambled for some reason doesn't go down as easily. > > I agree with your sentiments-- I don't miss anything as much as I DON " T miss the 90-some pounds I've lost. <BIG SMILE> > > :-) Kathy in VA > 7/6/06 > 297/
Guest guest
Hi , I recently have done the same thing. I found I also have the wheat allergy. I have been 100 percent better since going gluten free. I believe I have had the allergy my whole life and that it probably contributed to my arthritis. Guest guest
I also tried the wheat and gluten-free diet since I have a wheat allergy, but didn't really notice any improvement in my joints (although it did help with my stomach issues a bit)---which is too bad, because I was hoping it would be an easy fix! ~
Guest guest
Sorry, I'm a lurker (for my 21-y.o. son, dg Reiter's at age 10; symptoms were hip inflammation started age 3 several times a yr; urethritis cropped up age 10, became the major symptom since then, plus digestive issues set in at age 16...)-- haven't been online for awhile. Just wanted to say, my son had been soothing his stomach w/warm milk at night until one night a few mos. ago, he realized night-long stomach issues occurred even when he had nothing in tummy but milk.. started next day drinking Lactaid instead & found immediate relief from a chronic digestive problem that had been going on 3 yrs. We're not convinced he has or ever had bona fide lactose intolerance, but no question eliminating the lactic acid from his milk made a huge & immediate difference. He also now takes lactaid pills whenever ingesting ice cream. Cheese & yogurt, no problem. Reading this thread has made me think we might want to try going to spelt bread & taking other anti-wheat measures. My middle son had pains & issues when growing that made me think he had wheat allergy, so we have spent a few years on that route as well. Our experience was: the wheat-based pasta is pathetic (esp. if you're Italian as we are), but the spelt bread is not bad, & as someone mentioned, Trader Joe's can help you with shopping lists of gluten-free foods. ANOTHER THOUGHT: my sister has Reiter's Syndrome also (incurred 5 yrs ago within 24 hrs after her 10th annual flu shot...) Anyway. Long before she had Reiters-- this is a person with a lot of allergies-- she thought she was becoming alcoholic (!) & eventually thro trial & error found she was overly sensitive to wheat and also hops. Clearly these things are connected in some way not yet understood by the medical community. For anyone who is trying to make their way through the maze of food allergy, I have always found this author extremely helpful: the late Dr Stuart M Berger. His book, the Immune Power Diet was extremely helpful when we were raising kids who were allergy-prone & preferred vegetarian diets-- we had to make a lot of difficult food choices, & his books helped. Best of luck, everyone!
Guest guest
I'm not sure if this is applicable, but I thought I would share my experience as well. I have only been diagnosed this year however I've had problems throughout my life. Even though my symptoms were not full blown like they have been the past year, I know I have never felt better than when I've been on the Atkins diet in the past. (Actually eating peanut butter from the big salmonella recall last year is how my Reiters was triggered unfortunately) In the Atkins book, people would talk about side effects such as constipation, insomnia, tiredness, and weakness, and for me, I slept better, had more energy, and my lifelong constipation (even as a child) was resolved. It's a hard diet to follow long term, (especially if you are like me and don't enjoy big chunks of meat) but I've just restarted this diet in the past 2 weeks, have lost 7 pounds, and my ankle tendon pain has markedly subsided. I just wish I would have tried this 6 months ago when I was force feeding myself a poptart (50 carbs and lots of JUNK) so I could take my anti- inflammatories without throwing up every morning. The diet eliminates all wheat (no bread, pasta, or starches at all) which would support what you all have said above.

You have to be careful though, spelt is NOT gluten-free. It is closely related to wheat, and while some people that are wheat intolerant can handle spelt, others cannot. Spelt is not okay for someone diagnosed with Celiac Disease (gluten intolerance): http://www.celiaccentral.org/Research/Research_News/Celiac_Disease_Resea rch_News/130/pg__1/vobId__177/ The key to finding good wheat free pasta is finding a good brand. A lot of the rice-based ones come out mushy and gross, but Tinkyada brand actually comes out very nicely. It may not be perfectly " al dente " when it cooks, but it tastes like regular pasta so that's good enough for me. ~
Guest guest
Seska, thanks for the input on spelt bread, I'd forgotten it was only " low-gluten " . Brandnewday that info on the Atkins diet is intriguing! I have a close friend who has multiple health problems (many allergies, bipolar, scoliosis, heart murmur/valve issues). Her husband has had 2 bouts of uveitis which make me wonder if he has Reiter's; as you can imagine both kids have inherited all sorts of odd health problems. Your post reminded me that for years the family would save up their pennies and take an " Atkins cruise " out of Florida periodically, and they would try to get on the Atkins diet as a family for a disciplined period every year. All of them found relief from various issues when on Atkins. Interestingly this family's allergy problems seemed to be a function of the environment in the northeast. When they relocated to Florida a few yrs ago, all their environmental allergies (plants etc) disappeared, and that seemed to help food allergies & other health issues settle to a low roar. Clearly, if you can address a chunk of your allergies, that lowers your daily immune response, which should help lower your immune responses on the disease front as well. Guest guest
Hey Beth and Everyone! I thought it was fascinating too. I'm still on Atkins gung-ho and hope to stay on it as long as I possibly can. With the exception of Sulfsalazine, I am 100% medication free and have completely STOPPED taking the anti-inflamatories that had more side effects than benefit for me. I never have, and still don't really consider myself to have food allergies, but maybe I should rethink that idea. What I do know is that ridding myself of carbs and sugar makes a positive change in my health before and after knowing that I have Reiters. Do I still have pain and stiffness every time I move....YES, unfortunately. I probably will forever. But once I get going, there are times in my day when I forget that I have a problem and that's hard to believe after last January when I was to the point that I requested my husband to get me crutches if he ever wanted me to get out of bed. Is this all because of a diet change. No, of course not. But it's just one more thing that's helping and as much as I want a donut, or some nice crusty garlic cheesebread, or large cone from DQ, not a bite will cross these lips!! (Plus, I want to drop the weight that I gained sitting around in misery all last winter!) Genie

Guest guest
Gay, You gave up not the only thing that loved you, but the only thing that helped you cope with whatever was going on of bad. Since it is no longer there, now you need to deal with whatever is good. Find all the things you love most and focus on them. Bottom line: focus on YOU. When you feel strong enough without food, do whatever you feel is best for YOU. Leave that husband, get a boyfriend, go for whatever YOU deserve. Because you do deserve happiness. All of us do. People were born to be happy. Everything else is just bull... and a husband who is not there for you is better to be very far away. Your children are not babies anymore. Go girl! Focus on YOURSELF. YOU deserve it! > > I just feel that I gave up the only thing that loved me and I enjoyed each and every time I ate , I have a great 17 old girl with her head on and doing fab at school. Guest guest
Hi Gay... What you are going through is normal, some refer to it as buyer's remorse. It really is normal and a natural feeling after WLS. When I had my first surgery (band) I was soooo tempted to call Nina to schedule a band removal. I hated it. It's normal, I think most of us go through this. I didn't know at the time it was normal and to be expected, I thought I was just weird. Once I realized it was perfectly normal many of the bad feelings went away on their own. This time frame really kinda sucks, you are on a post op diet and let's be realistic here, it's hard to do the post op diet, the diet sucks big time, everyone around you is enjoying food that you want and can't have and sometimes that causes a bit of resentment. We all kinda get moody during those times and simply having WLS is hard enough without all the bizarre emotions that go with surgery. Who is your patient coordinator, Nina? Call your patient coordinator and see if they have any suggestions for you. Support with Dr. A and team does not end at the day of discharge from Almater. Maybe a little med therapy might be beneficial. What about Gaby? She's a fantastic source of help and remember - she's a PhD (Psychologist). She's helped me through a few issues. Sometimes just knowing that what you are experiencing is typical, normal, and knowing it will pass makes all the difference in the world. > > Hi all, > First a BIG THANKS TO DR A and staff!! > > I was sleeved 3 weeks and 2 days ago and am down 21 pounds! Guest guest
He Gay, It is time that you took care of Gay. For the 25 years of your married life you took care of everyone else, but yourself. When you feel good about you then you will be on the right track--sometimes it take a little while. Don't give away YOUR power to a man who doesn't deserve you. I would suggest that you write in a journal every night all the anger and hurt feelings you have about him and anything else that is on your mind as you write. You ex-husband is never going to hear what you want him to hear--it took me many years to figure that one out, but witting it down in a journal gives you some validation to just who you are and a voice. This journal is just for your eyes only and it really does help get rid of the anger and feeling of being used. I have been where you were after 22 years of marriage and had to kids to raise when I booted him out after finding him with his girlfriend. Keep talking to people who make you feel good and that you trust. A little counseling might make you feel better or a support group--consider it. But stick to the the new lifestyle you are doing now and don't let anyone or anything stop you. Keep talking to us. It honestly took me almost two years to really feel good about myself. Now many years later I am going to take on the weight issue. Hugs, Suzanne In a message dated 9/21/2008 6:22:48 A.M.
