Guest guest
Hello everyone, I have been lurking on this list for quite some time, and dont always pay attention to all the posts. I have a real problem and dont know what to do or where to start. Last June I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. In October we got the dosage right to 75mg of Synthriod. Before the hypothryroidism, I was a ver active person, cheerleader at school, playing soccer, swimming, I was in very good physical shape. Then Last year I started to pack on the pounds, for no reason, I was still excerising, eating right, etc, and I kept gaining weight. So I was diagnosd, and basically my dr told me that by taking the pills I would be back to normal within a year. Well, I am getting progressivly worse, although my blood tests say otherwise. And I dont know if all this stuff is realted, but I am guessing it is because blood tests showed that the only thing wrong with me is that I am hypothyriod. My skin is awful, its dry and ver sensitive, never used to be that way. I am growing hair in places Ive never grown hair before, which is rather embarrasing when I get intimate with my boyfriend. My periods have pretty much stopped, but now Im on the pill to get my periods ( does this mean I'll never have kids??) All my joints hurt, I was on some meds for that but it never helped. I had never had any of these problems before. I am only 18.... and I am starting to go crazy. I feel like my body belongs to someone else, and it is starting mto make me very depressed to the point where I stopped going to work, I dont hang out with my friends anymore... and my doctor says oh yea give it a year... but things arent getting better they are getting worse! PLease if anyone has any suggestions or adivece, or has experienced any of this, could you please contact me? I am going out of my mind! TIA. nne
Guest guest
Hi nn, Sorry to hear you're going through such a tough time. I'm 42 and have been hypothyroid for almost 30 years now. Several months ago, after basically going through similar symptoms which you're experiencing, I started doing some research and found several articles and information on Shomon's, Thyroid Guide website -- http://thyroid.about.com. The information which caught my attention was regarding adding T3 to the T4 medication. I went to my doctor and he prescribed Thyrolar (which has both T3 and T4 hormones) whereas synthroid only has T4. Since then, I no longer feel brain fog, depression, no more joint or body aches, and my hair and nails are no longer brittle and dry. There are other medication options (please refer to the website so that you can read about the alternatives) but I would suggest you read up on it and see if you think this would benefit you. Good luck and my prayers are with you. Guest guest
Hi nne, Hormones can really throw your body out of whack. It is possible that the thyroid is being undertreated, but not too likely. What about your other hormones, specifically estrogen and progesterone? If you have too much estrogen circulating in your body and not enough progesterone to counterbalance it, the inbalance can create alot of the symptoms you are having. Have you spoken to your doctor about how you are feeling? I would strongly suggest you get your estrogen and progesterone checked out. The excess estrogen can also have a slowing affect on the thyroid. The other hormones that could be causing some problems is the adrenals, so that might be an area to check out also. I hope this is helpful, and I am so sorry you are experiencing these very unpleasant symptoms. Let me know how you do and please get those other hormones tested. Guest guest
Hi nne Being hypothyroid sucks. It makes you feel awful and tired and sad. People who haven't experienced it will never really understand how it feels (lucky for them!). The thing that has helped me the most was to get as much information about the disease as I could find, and to discuss what I learned with my doctor, and talking to other thyroid patients. What is your TSH level? It could be in the " normal " range and still be high for you. For example if the normal range is .35 - 5.0, and your level is 5.0, technically that is in the normal range, where maybe what is normal for you is more around 2.0 or lower! So you could still be hypothyroid and having symptoms even though the results say you have normal TSH levels. Talk to your doctor about this. If your doctor is only concerned with the results of your blood tests and is not listening to you about your other symptoms, Find A New Doctor!! I am on Doctor #3 right now and was just diagnosed in October. You will find that doctors can be very different in what they think is important and how they feel the disease is best managed. Learn everything you can about your condition so you will be able to discuss things with the doctor and know whether or not you agree with her style of treatment. Be persistant....if the doctor doesn't take you seriously or doesn't listen to what you are saying, then the doctor isn't a good doctor. Get copies of all your test results and make sure you understand them. The best book I have read is by Ridha Arem, MD, " The Thyroid Solution " . I got it on Amazon. I suggest you read it. It explains a lot of things, and focuses on the emotional aspects of the disease more than any other book, it will help you to feel less crazy. The depression you say you are feeling could be a side effect of the hypothyroidism. I have been taking St. 's Wort and it has been helpful for that. He also talks about the joint pain and explains it and some treatments. He explains the blood tests your doctor does and how to understand their results so that you can better understand what is happening in your body. Also check out Shomon's site at http://about.thyroid.com which I think someone else already mentioned. She has tons of info and also great message boards to talk to others with thyroid problems. So most of all, get educated and get assertive with your doctor, and change doctors as much as you have to until you find one you like and who listens to your symptoms, not just your blood tests. It's difficult, but worth it. Hang in there, things will definitley get better!! in peace, Kristilee >From: Maeday17@... > >Hello everyone, I have been lurking on this list for quite some time, and >dont always pay attention to all the posts. Guest guest
I just wanted to comment that Dr. Arem's book is wonderful and i found out he was in Houston last year. =) I have been seeing him as my Endo. My TSH is now at 2.31 but he wants it to be around 1.0 We are working on my Hashimoto's Disease and PCOS. He wanted to do a biopsy on nodules he was feeling but they can't find them under ultrasound. This has me worried right now. Guest guest
Dear Kristilee: Good advice. However, what perhaps you could have said is that a person needs to look for a doctor of natural healing, not one that is medicallly trained. medically trained personnel tend to be highly influenced by pharmaceutical company advertising which urges them to prescribe [sell] synthetic drugs [$$$]. Hypothyroidism in its simple form is a deficiency of iodine, zinc, B6, magnesium, selenium and trace elements. This does not require " replacement " it requires the raw materials. Thyrodine supplies these raw materials and thereby restores thyroid function. If there is an auto-immune dysfunction or a thyroiditis, this generally means that there is a viral or candida infection of the thyroid in which the viral tissues are perceived as an antigen and anti-bodies are made to destroy the infected thyroid tissue. In this case a natural antibiotic, like ImmunoGuard, will eliminate the offending pathogen and then Thyrodine will restore thyroid function. If there is a hyperthyroid, thats generally a deficiency syndrome that requires vitamins A-C-E + the Thyrodine. RAI is almost never an intelligent option as once a thyroid is destroyed, its gone forever, generally. I've had so many people tell of the terrible symptoms they experience from synthetic hormones, even Armour which is an extract of pig thyroid. Again, these are " replacement " drugs are are almost never indicated. Blood tests are notoriously inaccurate. But medically trained personnel don't know of any other way to gain clues about thyroid function. 's syndrome is a case in point. Dr. found that he had a lot of patients with overt symptoms of thyroid dysfunction but their blood tests were all normal. So they probably got tranquilizers. In my experience of 30 years of dealing with thryoid dysfunction I have seen literally hundreds of people, mostly women, who have regained a normal life with abundant energy and an absence of PMS, menopausal symptoms, etc. On our web site we cover all the possible combinations that follow on from thyroid dysfunction as a basic cause of ill health. The web site is www.thyrodine.com If people really want to regain their energy, their self esteem, their vibrant health, they will have to learn that health does not come from drugs and the SAD [standard American diet]. Check out this web site for nutritional data www.hacres.com Use the data from both these sites and take responsibility for your own health. Remenber, medical " misadventures " are documented to cause up to 200,000 deaths a year with billions in hospital costs. All drugs are harmful, including hormone replacements. Enough said. best wishes, Earl Re: Can someone help me PLEASE???? From: Kristilee Helmick <kristilee1@...> Hi nne Being hypothyroid sucks. It makes you feel awful and tired and sad.
